We say this because it makes us feel better about ourselves, but for now we're still well behind several other Melbourne clubs, including Hawthorn, Collingwood and Richmond, at least. We can be seen to be a destination because we have immediate gaps to fill and opportunity accounts for plenty...but we have some way to go, before you'd want to go to Teague before a Clarkson or even a Buckley.

We may be a destination club relative to St.Kilda, North, The Dogs or Melbourne, but we're not the cream of the crop just yet.
Nothing wrong with that though, given where we are......but let's put things into perspective.
You make some valid points. The reality now, as opposed to years gone by, is that players want to come and play for us now. We may not be a destination club in the sense that players think they can come here and ride our coattails to a premiership (like hawthorn in years gone by eg). It is a club though where players are attracted to us because of our list (to die for), the strong culture and a great coach. This year there are more players wanting to come than we have trade currency for (leaving aside players), so we are in the literal sense a destination club, that is, a place where good players want to come.

Weitering BOG in Mykonos? Surely they're taking the piss haha

I didn't believe Weitering would be sowing his oats in mykonos.

But then I looked it up and saw September is the ideal time to sow oats in the Northern hemisphere.

Weiters would 100% know this :p

Players go to all sorts of clubs for all sorts of reasons -
North got Polec & Pittard last year - Melbourne got Preuss (someone I though we could have looked at) - Saints got Hannebery and are now getting Hill.

There are though many good reasons for players to want to come to us for reasons other than money.
SOS casts the net early on and shows the right love for the right players, even if the likes of Shiel & Coniglio didn't make it. The efforts will win out in the end.
We are a big club with a strong supporter base that plays in front of big crowds.
Our list is clearly a good and exciting one.
The captain/s are beauties and have at least 5 years in front of them.
The coach though? Much too early to make the call on that, other than for players that have spent time with him previously.

In summary: We're well on our way to being a destination club, but should all things be equal by way of remuneration, by way of tenure, by way of opportunity, I'd dare to guess that we still have Melbourne-based clubs, Hawthorn, Collingwood, Richmond, Geelong and probably even Essendon ahead of us.
That leaves us about a mid-table 'destination' club. No shame in that given where we are.

I don't get the motivation for Sauce? He'd still be second in line...surely GWS, Geelong, even Essendon make more sense.

Very good chance of our current Ruck stocks that only Kreuzer and TDK are on our list in 2020.

Kreuzer is on the wrong side of 30 and has an injury history. (but when fit I love the guy)

TDK has played all of 2 games and is a bit raw.

That's the motivation.

Besides, Jacobs is a free agent. It would be negligent list management to not speak with him.

I understand our motivation. What is his?

This one in particular is still so bizarre to me. Exactly what happened with him this year is exactly what everyone predicted beforehand. No idea why they grabbed him.

He's out of contract, wants out of Adelaide, wants gametime.

The only thing I don't get about a possible return of Betts is why he would give up 600k to play for peanuts when Adelaide will have new coach.

He won't be giving up 350-400k to join us.

Apparently * showing interest in Ellis.

That’s actually funny... while they should be putting money into getting inside mids (and probably a reliable key forward), Dodoro just can’t help himself but go after another ‘highlight reel’ winger/flanker that both epitomises their current list and exacerbates their issues!

If they land Ellis and as a result don’t have the money to go after SPP (or a similar player) I’ve got * supporting mates who will absolutely lose it. I’ll lose it too, but in a very different way...

He’s not the only one wanting out if Adelaide, that pre season camp did a heap of damage
That happened two years ago and there is a new coach this year. Why didn’t he want out last year if it was so traumatic?

I reckon players are jumping off because they know they won’t be playing finals for a while and because of the youth policy.

They grabbed him because they could and had to show something for the year they had.
They also threw out 900K for Hill this year, knowing no one else would get close to that figure.

This is what desperate clubs have to do to be seen to be doing something.
We've got ourselves out of this type situation with the advent of SOS and thank **** for that.

Pure desperation has no boundaries I suppose.

Now they're stuck with him for big bucks. Swans still laughing at that deal.

Ricciuto, Burton, Camporeale........

Betts DID want out last year. It was rumoured everywhere, then shot down. They lost McGovern, lost Cameron the year before, so maybe Adelaide held firm on him.

I agree Mr Harker that we are currently mid table on the 'destination club ladder'.

But I can't help but fast forward a couple of years to where we should be making finals.

Potentially we will have all the positives you mentioned PLUS strong on-field performances and a coach with more cred. And still a very young best 22. That should shoot us right up the destination club ladder.

Got no issue with Betts and Sauce as back ups.

+add some experience to a team which doesn't have any
+fill needs for 1-2 seasons while we use draft picks to get players like Martin and Papley
+They dont pan out, inexpensive to cut them

As much as we all would like 21 year old's filling every position and building a 10 year dynasty, it's not reality. Sometimes you just have to take the best on offer while you bring in your top priority targets.

Can you imagine how many players' agents went knocking on Hawthorns door over the course of the last ten years?
You won't hear about players asking to go to a club and being denied, but you always hear when a club is after a player.
That's what really makes for a destination club, along with being happy to accept less money just for the 'privilege' of playing for the club you want.

The thing with our club is that should (when, actually) things fall into place, we should have a decent run at becoming and staying a relevant, destination club.

Backup? Betts walks straight into our best 22. He kicked more goals than any other Carlton player this year.

It's unlikely Kreuzer plays 22 games next year. Sauce will be offered plenty of opportunity if he comes.

Dodoro is trying to assemble an entire midfield that can't kick. It's a bold strategy.
