yes - we are all looking forward to the improvement expected from all the 40-50 gamers on the list and there are always reasons why a player doesn't progress as well as expected in any year...

but my response was to a specific question - which asked was anyone surprised by their form - and my response was in the affirmative - which merely suggests to any person that reads English - that I was too optimistic about the rate of their progress. I am no longer too optimistic.

I think Dow is a victim of Bolton's midfield strategy - by the time Teague sent the big boys into the middle his confidence was completely shot.

Think we all sometimes forget how young Dow (and LOB) is/are.

Second year players. Drafted at not even 80kg. Asked to do some heavy AFL lifting in what is usually a VFL phase for most other kids.

They will be fine players. They might not become superstars but not everyone has to be.

Not only are they young, they have/had been playing in the guts against mature midfielders.
Getting smashed (physically) week in, week out does not develop you.

Most teams who play kids, have an experienced spine/midfield who rotate kids through the areas.

It is no wonder the likes of Dow & Fisher have plateaued, the balance has been wrong.

Scott did say that he would only let Kelly go for 18 first rounders; he smiled when saying it, but I sensed an irony of truth in his smile. In that context 40 1st's might not be as crazy as it seems.
