I hate all this posturing stuff. Papley for 9 is perfect. If we have to add a second or a few later upgrades to stroke the Swans ego so be it. He is a huge need.

In a years time he’ll have kicked 40 goals under our big 3 and we’ll have another 7-8 years of Papley genius to look forward too as we rise up the ladder. We’d be lucky if pick 9 makes a noticeable impact before 2022. Get it done.

If both clubs came out a week before trade period and said that everything was great and a deal was in place, nobody would have anything to talk about. AFL has a vested interest in media space and interest around this time of year so it's just the nature of the Beast.

BTW people, I might add that I think SOS would be extremely wary of giving pick 9 directly to Sydney for Papley because if Sydney then use that pick as part of the Daniher trade, then that gives * 3 top 10 picks.
2 of those picks could then be used to recruit an elite mid, making one of the mid tier competitors stronger.
I doubt SOS will allow that to happen, especially if an elite mid gets linked to * early on, such as Wines.

Where do the other top ten picks come from?

I think you’re assuming:
Essendon trade next years first and Wrangle #5 out of Sydney?

Plausible ... not sure Sydney give up that muchthough

Keep in mind that Essendon also need to convince a premium midfielder to come to them. If they're losing Daniher and Fantasia, that task gets a hell of a lot harder.

Which premium mids are still "on the market"?

At this stage, Crouch for sure, though it certainly looks like he's just trying to get a better deal from Adelaide.

Wines is a maybe. His name keeps popping up but his manager and club have hosed it all down.

Hill is going to St Kilda by all reports, and isn't an inside mid anyway.

Langdon to Melbourne. Jones to St Kilda or Richmond. Ellis to GC, but doesn't need picks. None are elite.

Maybe Essendon swing something from left field that nobody has seen coming, but I'm not seeing why an elite midfielder would want to join a club who promise so much and deliver so little, and have just lost two of their most dynamic forwards. You could also probably argue that if Daniher leaves, and Fantasia goes to Port for Powell-Pepper and change, that Essendon would be in more dire need of a key forward than anything else.
