Had a look at our top 7 goal kickers (by average) for this year.

Charlie 1.6g/0.7b
Mitch 1.4/0.7
Harry 1.3/1.5
Kennedy 1.1/0.5
Cuningham 0.8/0.6
Jack 0.8/0.7
Gibbons 0.8/0.7

For an average score of 7.7 goals & 5.3 behinds for 51.6pts.

If re-do the top 7 with Eddie (1.8/1) & Papley (1.7/1.3) the average score goes up to 9.6 goals & 6.3 behinds for 64.1pts.

Doesn't seem like much, but if add those additional 12.5pts per game our 2019 F/A/% jumps up to 85.6/86.6/99% and post bye(Bolts) it jumps up to 91.7/82.9/111%... that's finals stuff.

Obviously it's an incredibly simplistic analysis only looking at 2019 scores and it clearly doesn't work like that in the real world, but it's an interesting thought none the less.

My attitude towards the trade period is laid back. Plenty of time to get players through the door.

I feel like we own the property and we can listen to all the ridiculous shouting from prospective purchasers because we’re selling folks not buying.

Different drafts, can't compare.

Exactly and we do this all the time, as if a draft number alone expresses the quality of the player attainable.

Pick #9 last year could have had you net Caldwell, Butters, Hately, Clark etc.
Doesn't seem to me as though that sort of quality will be there this year, but even if it was, it doesn't make up for needs.
Papley would be perfect for us should we get him for the #9. That's what really matters.

Fair point

Charlie Cameron went for 12.. but that's still not top 10.

Devon Smith was Trade for Pick 11, and a future third rounder from the Drug Cheats, but they gave back second round pick 24 and a future second round pick as well.

That type of deal for Papley would seem about right for us.

I suspect that Sydney only intend to use one first round pick for Daniher, either 5 or 9 and maybe some loose change. the need to trade with us, I feel is only to remain in the early first round after the Daniher trade is done. They will posture over which one he is worth, 5 or 9. So who might they need this pick for, that it warrants trading Papley to us for.
I agree, they want 9 so they don’t have to trade 5, no way they give up basically 5 & Papley for Daniher

Lol if you keep worrying about things like that you'll never do any big trades...

So you would rather miss out on Papley and weaken our team, just so that Essendon don't get pick 9? That's pretty outrageous.

Probably true.

Could you imagine Harry, Charlie, McGov plus Papley, Zurhar and Eddie strolling down to the forward 50 to start the game?

Defenders would wetting their pants.........

and Carlton supporters would be creaming theirs.......

If it is a press conference for Daniher what do you think it could be? Surely they wouldn't go through all that just for a nomination...

Who knows - someone in the media may have been tipped off that he's meeting with his manager and they sent the van around to try and doorstop him on the way out hoping for a scoop. Could be absolutely nothing.

Devin Smith was traded to be a full time midfielder at Essendon. Cameron at pick 12 who stayed a small forward would be close to the mark for Papley I’d say

My point was more about what came back with the trade - ie. the second round pick, this is what we should get back as a very minimum if we are to use pick 9, for Papley.

i'd hope carlton are looking at him

Ambivalent. Wouldn't be against it, but reckon he's a prime example of an ordinary player who looks really good in a particular system.

Prefer Cutler, who while he has less runs on the board, should cost less and has a bit more flexibility in where he can play.
