Good thing Martin is out of contract so GC really don't have much of a leg to stand on then.

Re Papley, it could be unders but I just think the value of 9 is pretty high and there should be an exchange in our favour elsewhere. In the scenario above we are trading Pick #69 to Sydney for their pick #25-30 next year. Effectively a 30-40 pick upgrade in the later rounds to go along with Papley to secure Pick #9. Is that too much? Potentially and maybe if we get our ahnds on a pick #50 odd (for example from Gold Coast in the above scenario), that may be an easier sell.

True re Martin being OOC .... but our risk playing hardball is that another club comes to the party .... I could see Dons, Dogs or Norf trying to open discussions with him and the GC again. All depends on how committed we think he is to us.

Re Papley - all subjective for us punters .... I see him as a perfect fit for us and providing exactly what we need. I have no issues with us give up pick 9 for him. Maybe we'd be looking for a late 3rd back if we've got out eye on something .... points could come into play for Sydney next year with their prospective academy guys coming thru - maybe something we can leverage.

Well aware that I will be shot down for asking the question and probably ignored altogether :)

But who is the mid we are seeking outside of the Papley, Martin, and Betts deals?

Gaff, Oliver, B Crouch, Wines?

Was the suggestion Papley wants to spend more time in the middle, but yeah, not really sure about which mids we are even looking at.. Cutler has come up also, though he isn't really a mid either?

Current Picks: #9, #41, #46, #69, #82, #2020 R1, #2020 R2, #2020 R3
Potential Trade Assets: Levi Casboult
Targets: Tom Papley, Eddie Betts, Jack Martin.

Trade 1 - Eddite Betts
Carlton In: Eddie Betts, Out: #82

Trade 2 - Jack Martin (Option A)
Carlton In: Jack Martin and #55, Out: #46 and #2020 R2

Trade 2 - Jack Martin (Option B)

Carlton In: Jack Martin, Out: #46 and Levi Casboult

Trade 3 - Tom Papley
Carlton In: Tom Papley and Sydney #2020 R2, Out: #9 and #69

Is it going to be that simple? I think those trades are fairly reasonable.

Leaves us with #41, #55 #2020 R1, #2020 Syd R2 and #2020 R3 still as draft capital. Allowing us to:
* upgrade our position in the draft this season - for example by trading #2020 Syd R2 and #41 to Essendon for #31 and #37 maybe or West Coasts #24 and #33?; or
* go after another big trade Target without our #2020 R1 pick as the juicy carrot.

Alternatively if no alternate players present themselves, we still have capital to boost up the offers set out above to ensure wre get our men.
cant see Sydney giving up next year second, don’t they have academy players they will next the points for next year

Talking to a few players last night didn’t give away too much that we didn’t already know but thought it might be worth sharing. It looks as if they’re confident Betts, Papley & Martin are all coming

Casboult mentioned he would be staying, that it’s all sorted out

Interestingly enough, Phillips wasn’t overly confident but he was hoping to stay if possible.. Bombers looming
Good to hear the Casboult is staying! Was huge this year and so flexible.

I cant see how a big fish comes in due to our picks.

But i do see the Papley & Martin trades being worked out like this;

Papley + Pick 25 for Pick 9 & 2020 2nd - they need picks next year for academy kids
Martin for Pick 25

Great work but you’ve weakened our ruck stocks and a bit of versatility by trading away Levi.

I wrote on pre lim final week about Gaff being blues mystery player.
A carlton player last night less mustache who brother plays for the weagles says he has heard nothing across country.
I am sure he was genuine. He did say he would be wrapped if Gaff played with him at blues.
Seven years back luck= smashed mirror.
Smashed= smashing someones teeth out
Mirror= couldn't look at himself in the mirror afterwards.
=Gaff a blue

Yes, I like this suggestion - but is it possibly too sensible for this thread? 🤷‍♂️

I weary whenever I read that, it's as if the competition is static and/or we can predict the future. All I know is that on face value, in most drafts it would be a bad idea to give up a pick that high for Papley, particularly for a side that is not competing in finals. It appears this is not like most draft years but the least we could do is to ask for something back that we think would help us.

I can confirm that JImmy Buckley still likes a beer. Its going to be a long flight to other side of world after beverages offered at b&f last night.
Loves his beer.
Jimmy was at Warrnambool early this year for the racing carnival.
My daughter works at one on the Pubs there (Carton supporter) and when he found out he spent most of the night sitting at the bar talking footy.
Apparently he is a really nice guy.

Good news about Casboult.
The club cannot let Casboult and/or Phillips go.

Not announced, but what I’ve been told from someone at Richmond who would know
Hope you're right with this one as the end of first round would be ridiculous. The secret herbs and spices compo formula surely needs to take the quality of the footballer into account and not just the contract size.

9 is fine for papley. Ask yourself this: if we used #9 on a young kid and he turned out to be as good as papley would you feel like the pick was wasted? I certainly wouldnt. Papley is one of the best small forwards of the competition. With only charlie cameron, walters and lloyd ahead of him.

Then you have to add premium
1. Certainty. Vs unknown of taking a pick
2 contracted

Quality of player is subjective. More than anything, the AFL needs to be consistent in its application or remove compensation altogether

I'm a bit the same but for polar opposite reasons. I think that whether it's pick 1 or pick 70, there's a hell of a lot of uncertainty about 18 year old kids coming out of the juniors into the AFL ... whereas we have 4 years of proven track record at AFL level in Papley.

Maybe I'm tainted by years of shite performance by us at the draft pre-SOS.
