This is why I cannot understand why we would be chasing Martin. Get Papley and Butler for cheap as crumbing forwards and try to lure a really good midfielder to provide some assistance for Cripps.

Martin would provide either great delivery out of the backline, or great delivery into the forwardline. We need this more than another slow, inside mid.

Connecting dots - player would have been in contract, and their club likely would have been blind-sided by a trade request. A lot of potential for something like that to derail other discussions.

I'm pretty sure the player TheRedPill would've been talking about was Crouch, who we've likely ruled out. As to WHY he was turned away, well it'd either be because the demands/cost were too high; he wasn't the type of player we were after; or because we've got another in that same bracket (read: Gaff) that we're still in the hunt for.


The last few pages debating the value of a previously engaged, positive poster who hasn't been on here for a while has got pretty savage. Multiple 'f off' calls in earnest suggest its not just harmless banter.

That's what you get with this form of communication. If we really knew each other and had face to face relationships we would speak respectfully, allow each other to have differing opinions and find common ground. Internet sucks so much in so many ways, it becomes black and white and all interaction is devoid of that human connection, vulnerability and social cues. Ever since getting into a shitfight at CSC about 15 years ago I decided to completely take out all emotional engagement with fellow posters and never ever make it personal. The only time i become emotional is if we are all sharing in the emotion of the club. I enjoy these places so much more now!

Hope you're right. Still if Cripps gets injured and with Murphy turning 33 next year the cupboard is looking thin. Just don't like the fact we may use our future first for Martin an uncontracted 25 year old flanker who isn't worth a first rounder.

I don't think there's any intention of using our future first for Martin. And if it did fall that way, I'm sure we'd be pushing to get plenty back. GC's future second would be Pick 20, which might only be 6-10 spots after our pick.

GC demand a first, knowing full well that we'll negotiate down. We'll offer our future second, knowing full well that they'll negotiate up. It'll end up being somewhere in between. We'll manufacture an early second, or we'll give our future first with plenty coming back, or we'll give our future second and something else.

Martin has played in defence before? He has only had 30 possessions once in his 97 game career. Not sure we are going to suddenly be turning him into a MID. My Point is not sure he is the player we should be trageting

Regardless GCS won't let him leave for free. Terrible precedent to set. It'll get done for our future 2nd or a better 2nd we obtain from another trade. He isn't worth a 1st.

Just a newbie here but has everyone forgotten about Ed Curnow?

Everyone saying we need help for Cripps in the middle, well we've got a tough inside mid in Ed. Remember when Cripps went down, Ed was doing the grunt work in the middle with a lot of success. Don't forget a couple of our good wins towards the end of the year, Cripps wasn't at his starring best, others were giving him a chop-out in the midfield. Also look at the development of blokes like Kennedy and Setterfield to play a bigger role in that sense.

As a couple posters have mentioned, I'm more concerned about classy outside mids who can actually deliver the ball efficiently, break the lines and kick goals. We seriously lack that dimension in our midfield. Hopefully Martin and Papley can give pitch-hits and make our midfield more dynamic in that sense.
