NAB cup shouldn't be taken too seriously, experiment with the side a tad, try youngsters in different positions

B - Iles, JA, Max
HB - L.Davis, Harry, Lonie
C - Thomas, Pendles, R.Shaw
HF - Medhurst, T.Cloke, Egan
FF - Cox, Rusling, Swan
Foll - Richards, Davies, Stanley
Int - Bryan, Lockyer, Fraser, H.Shaw, Toovey, Nicholls, Cook

dont take it too seriously

following players all rested
Bucks, Burns, Licca, Didak, Holland, OBree, Clement, Presti, Wakelin

I shouldn't say this but it is going to be so weird seeing no Tarrant playing for the pies
It's definitly going to be weird! It's going to hurt watching him play for another club in another jumper

Which reminds me, i have to take the pictures of him around my house down still....

Seeing as we are experimenting, a few ideas:
  • Egan off the Half Back Flank
  • Bryan at CHB
  • Davies on a half foward flank
  • Iles in the midfield
  • O'Brien as a deep lying full foward
Don't crucify me but those are just a few ideas

like a couple of those

but think we need to keep bryan/richards/fraser as rucks, as they are the only three we have, not much point playing them elsewhere

ego at hbf may work, id prefer l.davis tho
iles, nicholls would all be worht a shot thru the middle
i would like to try harry o thru the middle, he has plenty of athletic ability, but would he be able to find the pill?? lets find out!!

If Holland is fit he should be playing, He needs the match time with his suspension.

Are they still permitting suspended players to play in the NAB Cup?

Looks real good-who are we playing?

From memory our first game is against the Kangaroos in the NAB Cup, much like the regular season.

Yep, first NAB game is Friday night at Carrara 23 Feb vs Kangas. We may not want to rehearse all our best moves for them when we meet just over a month later in Round 1 of season proper.

However, no harm in giving some youngsters a bit of senior competition time: Anthony is a must. He's been given number 9 jumper and needs to be shown some confidence in his doubtless abilities (though granted he is young for a KPP, so maybe some 3rd tall defender time). If team balance allows, Toovey and Cox may also be worth a run (they are our "insurance" talls for a while).

But more than anyone other than Anthony, it would be good to see Nicholls step up for a game or two preseason as our possible long-term-injury rookie replacement. We may need him in season proper as our crumbing small, fast mid (we're not flowing over with them otherwise).

Other than that HShaw, Swan, Pendles, Iles to re-invent their mid roles. Richards & Bryan to check out each other as well. And probably should let Medhurst get used to the new colours and teammates. I guess it depends upon how they all train till then, which is still a couple of months away.

To rest: Pebbles' achilles; Fraser's stamina (recall he busted his knee doing pre-season games in NSW before); Bucks; Burns; Wakelin.

Happy if we lose this one (or the following one vs Freo/WCoast at Telstra Dome) and if we yet achieve strategic goals; unlike last season where we were all smarting from 05 and needed to pull out one or two extra stops in the NAB - probably to our older playing detriment.

I don't think Mick has ever taken the NAB Cup that seriously, it would be good for once to see the Pies win something and then have a good run going into the season.

rest clement + rocca, play wakelin, medhurst up fwd

Rocca doesn't need rest, he needs to be in form & fit.
Wakelin on the other hand needs rest as he has a tired and prone body.
i dont see much point in playing rocca, it's not like he needs weeks to get his form, he seems to be the kind of player that either has it or doesnt.

Clement doesnt need to be rested, but it may be worth leaving him out to make hte defence abit more accountable in his absence.

I'd leave out O'bree. Our team relies on him too heavily to be our in and under midfielder, and he ain't gonna be around that much longer, should encourage our youngsters to play his role, or at least gain experience doing so...

On one hand Rocca needs a big pre-season which may include playing the pre-season games on the other hand he needs to be able to keep up throughout the season. I think we should play him but with alot of bench time and perhaps rest him in the later rounds of the cup if we make it further (otherwise rest him in the regional games).

I don't think we really need to drop O'Bree to give other players a chance. Perhaps less game time in the pre-season or just move him in the forward line. It's true we rely on him too much to be our in and under player but if we rely on Pendlebury to fill the void by himself he will be out of depth.

who cares? it's a NAB cup game, and the experience will be invaluable. It'll give him a chance to show us what he can do, and probably expose some areas that need to be worked on.

It doesnt have to be only pendlebury. we have a few young midfielders that could do with the experience. Throw both Shaws, Egan, Thomas etc in there as well.

I reckon Wakes and Burns'll be in, Lockyer and Swan out. Wakes is on his last legs, and Burnsy needs to impress the coach. I'd look at letting Rusling play FF and play Rocca off the bench. Play him in spurts. Also switch Medhurst and Davis' positions. And is it an eight player interchange now? I thought it was still six. If it is still six "rest" Pendles and Lonie as well.
Mainly a good team though:thumbsu:

Would love to hear your reasoning? Most important 5 players???????????

OK, I'm going by this as far as how important he is to the team. Early last year he played mainly backline. In these games he was effective in a one two combo with Heath Shaw off the HBF and averaged around 20 disposals a game. Then mid-season, he was moved into the middle. Admittedly, he wasn't as effective as one would've hoped. However, late in the year last year he was moved to a HFF. In that position he scored 2 goals in every game after R17 except one I think. He is more valuable than most people thing because he can play anywhere on the ground. The same can be said for Dane Swan. So, going by skillwise, he isn't but he can play anywhere on the ground wihout breaking stride. I think only Clement, Buckley, Holland, Maxwell and maybe Dane Swan are mor important to the team set up. As far as skill goes, though, he would be behind a long list of players. If the side was selected based on skill, he would, admittedly, struggle to get a game.

Also would like to see Pendles given more of a run this year. He is a top player.

tarks is no where near our most 5 important players

he only kicked 2 goals twice from rnd 17 onwards

his skill by foot was his biggest strength before he did his knee, he has lost confidence in it since his return tho.

he is a good bloke and provides good presence around the club which is all well and good

but any of iles, nicholls, stanley, cox, cook could produce as much as him if given a chance i reckon
