Pies set up professionally in defense and we got grinded down by it. Got smashed around the contest. Just didn't click after half time too many fumbles and dropped marks and we will finish the season where our ladder position shows us. That was the game to make a statement and we missed the moment. Very deflating. Need to get it done in the off season and bring in Williams or Papley.

Not much to like from today. Midfield was non-existent and FIGJAM outcoached Teague with the Pendles on Crippa masterstoke knowing he wouldn’t be accountable defensively. The match committee need to pick one of Pitts or TDK (preferred) and let Levi give them a chop out.

We simply must address the midfield issues in the off-season as we haven’t been able to in years past. Almost no one should be considered untradable if we are to make a real step forward. Tough decisions on some of our elder statesmen need to be made too so there’s no better time to give them a rest over the last run of games to see if anyone on the fringe steps up.

Part and parcel of being a developing team. If Martin goes back and slots the goal at the end of Q3 the whole complexion of the game changes.
Developing is an excuse that sides with poor culture use. We've turned into that. Make no excuse though, 'development' is not the problem.

What needs to be rectified in the backline? Midfield agreed but, much of the scoring from filth was on rebound and spread. Really hard to defend that for an entire half. Mids with pace, two way running ability and silk skills please. Not much to ask for right?

Mids definitely. It still feels like we struggle to defend smaller/medium sized forwards with pace though.

We MUST move on from Marc Murphy.

We are learning, good and bad things, about ALL our players every week.

But surely we are aware that to start earning self respect back in a brutal league we must move on from Marc Murphy.

Oppositions thrive off his weakness out there in competitive games.

It’s not the midfields fault. It’s the forwards that prefer to sit under the high ball. No one has led to a ball since fevola.

McKay is far more effective one-one-one. Watch how effective he is when Curnow comes back into the team.

Our delivery today was also shocking.

Sps is pretty consistent in laying tackles. Atleast they can hit a target. Rather them than hack kick forwards

SPS claim to fail is his disposal, but its been pretty poor of late. Even worse is that he's turning it over with sideways chips which slow down our movement.

Is a good tackler though.

It was a free kick to Plowman. Not the reason we lost but quite remarkably missed by the umpireS,
No it was not a free kick to Plowman according to the rules of the game, the collingwood player played the ball and Plowman took his eyes off it and played the man-free kick Collingwood

If you think Tom Papley is the difference, maybe take another look and watch the replay.

Our small forwards in Gibbons, Fisher and Betts were 3 of our better players on the day.

Why would you want to trade away a midfielder for another small forward when we clearly lost the battle in the midfield and in defense?
Betts yeh. Fisher yea. Gibbons looked slow in mind and ball in hand. But not bad. Of course papley is not my only option. Im hoping to get williams froms gws aswell. All for the cost of a first and paddy dow if we pay enough for williams

Developing is an excuse that sides with poor culture use. We've turned into that. Make no excuse though, 'development' is not the problem.

Our biggest issue is not being able to find targets when we are transitioning through the midfield. This is not a cultural issue.

Correct. The two areas of the ground that need to be rectified first!
Some defensive pressure from our half forwards wouldn’t go astray either, there half backs allowed to do what they wanted especially when they pushed up into the midfield to out number, mids can’t win when they have 2 extra out the back of the contest, not the first time this has happened in second half’s either.

Are you sure about that?

Who was playing on Thomas in the first half?

It's pretty hard to follow that sort of thing on TV, especially when they're playing more of a zone defense.

Willo was on Thomas when he ran amok. Polson shut him down completely and also took himself out of the game.

Losing against the filth sucks hard but if you think about it, being disappointed because we’ll likely miss out on finals is a pretty good problem to have in comparison to our problems over the previous 6 years or so.. We are moving forward.

Nothing changes, year after year, the same mediocrity.

This club has spent years finishing on the bottom for nothing; there is nothing to show for it; just a little potential that won’t amount to much.

The top end draft picks aren’t even played...

All those losses for nothing....
Football is about winning, nothing else. This club is poisoned with woke agendas, people creating jobs for themselves.

the membership should retake control of the club; the board have failed and should be ousted.

Teague doesn’t possess tactical he’s a better version of Bolton.

Be ruthless, be brutal.

Carlton needs to regain its manhood...
so that you can regain yours?

Mids definitely. It still feels like we struggle to defend smaller/medium sized forwards with pace though.
That’s because these types are more likely to make a contest when the ball is spread or turned over. It’s why “genius” coaches decided a structured defence and flooding is better that manning up. Less space to be hurt on the spread. Fortunately that mentality seems to be changing and forwards are playing ahead of the footy. The result is higher scoring and bigger momentum swings. We were on the wrong end today.

Our forwards were pathetic. Harry, Levi, Gibbo & other smalls just not competitive enough. Their defenders ran it out of the backline using handball too easily with insufficient pressure on our account. What was our inside 50 tackle count? Disappointed we didn't try to contain Pendlebury and Adams. Dow & Polson have not improved imo. Time to try some of the other promising players to see who can play at this level.

The question I keep asking myself for well over 12 months is why does this coaching group continue to be fixated on being top heavy?
Or more to the point, why has this status quo not shown any signs of being challenged from within the coaching group? It told me not a lot has changed in the coaching group overall despite the head coach different. Need to shake the coaching group and selection group up big time. Get a whole bunch of new assistants that actually have more variety in their thinking and challenge each other.
We got good appointments in Russell and Luke Power outside the coaching group but within it has way too much sameness.
Until we shake that up we are going to not really move beyond 9th to 14th on the ladder which is disgraceful waste of talent for where out list should be developing this year.
Bring in Solomon for barker -- grab another Older head for Stanton .. should be plenty of blokes looking for job -- but who knows how Long barker contracted for -- seems like he is unsackable

Until today, Plowman had built a solid season of work for us, So I am going to cut him some slack..

Honestly this feels like the worst loss of the year, yes worse than Hawthorn, I had genuine enthusiasm/optimism at half time.

This one hurts. It hurts a lot. I feel like so much hope and optimism I had for us going fowards was washed away in our deplorable 2nd half.

When I wake up tomorrow, and my cooler wiser head prevails, I will know that is not the case.

Just feeling numb atm.

Hopefully Melbourne City can turn my frown upside down :)
You called it Elmer, but I don't reckon you expected such a shite second half....

yep - not quick enough for some but it's happening..........dow didn't do himself any favours today, polson wasn't the worst........

I'm not a fan of the 3 tall forward structure.

It was very noticeable when Pittonet was lumbering around up forward today that we couldn't apply much pressure.

Don't see how we'll consistently be able to apply pressure and stop that rebound should we persist.

Stop that rational thinking, AC. It’s completely inappropriate for the thread ;)
