Toast EF: Collingwood by a point.

I have heard a lot about the umpiring. There were probably a few bad calls each way. But the ones that seemed to ire the West Coast fans the most were:

1. The McGovern deliberate out of bounds - In my opinion, that was one of the most obvious deliberates I've seen. It was the correct call from the umpire and I'm glad he had the balls to make it. There were then a few examples later in the game where Collingwood players walked out of bounds, but I thought all of those were not deliberate. One example was Pendlebury where he demonstrated perfect technique which is to absorb the tackle and turn your body to allow the contact to take you out. Another way was Magden which was more line ball...but I still thought was genuinely in the motion of kicking.

2. The Adams 50 - I thought it was soft...but clearly there. It was a clear mark, followed by contact to the head. Automatic 50. It seemed to collect Adams in the eye, which could have caused serious injury. In any event it was late and high. Umpire had no option.

3. The Elliott non holding the ball - I thought this was a mistake. The umpire allowed play to go on and Elliott did not dispose of the ball legally. Technically, as Elliott had no prior, he was also not under an obligation to dispose legally, so the AFL will probably adjudge the decision as technically correct. But I think the umpire should have called a ball-up earlier if he judged no prior. Considering the ball was not knocked out in the initial tackle and Elliott rode the tackle, I think he should have been pinned. That resulted in a direct goal to us.

Irrespective of the above, there were also the following calls that went against us:

1. The Adams holding the ball - A clear mistake, right on 50 directly in front. Adams didn't even have the ball. If he was going to be pinned for dragging it in, it had to be called earlier...but in any event the ball spilled out. Clear mistake.

2. The Darling 'too high' against Crisp - Correct call. But no harder or softer than the Adams 50 metre. So if Adams got his 50, then that was the square up. So Eagles got their goal back.

There were a few others as well. Overall, we probably had a good run with the umps, but I didn't think it was so pronounced that it would have impacted the game.

lol at the whining over the Crisp throw when most of the Eagles players were playing rugby for most of the night.

The Elliott one was 100% holding the ball
The Adams HTB was 100% the howler of the season. 2 Eagles tackle each other and somehow Adams is holding the ball? lol
Both sides seemed to be allowed to kick the ball anywhere from 7-12 metres without being asked to play on
The McGovern deliberate was one of the most clear cut deliberates you'll ever see on a football field lol, how is it even a question

At least Madgen TRIED to disguise it a little bit, but his should have been deliberate too.

There was also one late in the game where one of our guys (was it Greenwood) laid a front on rugby style tackle on the boundary line. The Eagles player attempted to kick the ball while being tackled and had a fresh air shot. If that isn’t dropping that ball I don’t know what is.

There was also the McGovern "claimed" mark 15m out directly in front when it clearly was dropped and hit the ground. The umpire was screaming play on and eventually he is tackled by 2 of our blokes and drops the ball, yet the umpire just balled it up. Luckily it didn't cost us though due to JDG being a freak.

They also threw the ball numerous times (as all teams do) including a massive scoop/throw from Hurn in the last quarter about 25m out from our goal almost directly in front.

throwing the ball is endemic by all teams and needs to be stamped out of the game

Who would have thought the difference between making Buckley look like an genius or an idiot was less than a goal. Make no mistake if we had of lost no doubt bucks gets bashed for his Cameron selection. The only time I can recall where we have been proactive rather than reactive at the selection table, kudos to bucks and onto the cats now.

The worst missed throw was Ryan’s to Cripps that set up Allen’s goal, they may have even thrown it twice in the space of 3 seconds in that play

Oh yeah, I forgot that one.

All teams do it though and mostly get away with it.

Just re-watching the game (again) - that moment when Maynard plays on and gets tackled by Gaff in Q4, you can hear someone (crowd?) yelling about the ball being touched. I wonder if he heard 'touched ball' and thought he had to play on? Because there was no other reason for him to go so quickly with 2 forwards coming at him.

Feel like it's very hard to say with how little we can watch of the old guard of ruckmen. Guys like Nicholls, Farmer and Dempsey were all incredibly gifted, but it's nigh on impossible to find good footage of them. There are also more modern day guys who are often forgotten about. The likes of Cox, Stynes, Rehn and Ottens all had periods of dominance.

Nic Nat is certainly a great tap ruckmen, but I think he's benefited a lot from a good midfield around him as well. I think Paddy Ryder has similar tap ability to him
Of the old guard rucks I've only ever seen Dempsey live with any frequency - not a particularly athletic player by todays standards but by the standards of his time top tier with his hands.

Maybe, but I thought that he had seen WHE (I think it was him) clear on the wing by about 50m and took the risk to get it on to him.

Yeah I remember yelling ‘HOW WAS THAT NOT INCORRECT DISPOSAL?!?’ at the TV for that one. Then I got in trouble because the kids were asleep.

the maynard - ryan post game chat was one of the most inspirational things that i've seen on a footy oval for quite a while. With all the designer presentations and messages and the multitude official apologies for errant behaviour that i've seen throughout this season and past, the simple civil conversation between two players who had been at each other's throats for 100 minutes, provided an actual example of how sportsman should treat each other and how race relations should be conducted. There were times when I felt like throttling ryan during the course of the game, but maynard made me realise that once the game is finished, the game is finished. It's one thing to touch fists after a game and a another thing to put an arm around a bloke and show such respect. Both players should be nominated for the nobel peace prize.

I thought the Thomas non-mark was the worst of the lot (until Adams was pinged). Clean mark and then punched out of his hands. Should have been having a shot from 25 out.

Cant agree. If its was a kick the other way I'd be acknowledging that as a great performance.
