There’s rumours McKernan is headed to GWS.

Nice delisting Essendon, could’ve been steak knives in a trade.
I mean he could still be?

Disappointing news re: Caldwell. We're a stupid club.

I've not followed along, is this a bad thing we are getting him or a good thing?

Why is it bad? (contract, ability, cost)

182cm
83 kgs
Played 11 games
Slipped in the draft after numerous hamstring issues
Lucrative five year deal

He’s not even here yet and it’s already peak Essington. Plenty more pain to come.
The "lucrative" part doesn't really worry me since we seem to have already sewn up the priority signings, and I would assume it's front-loaded with some of the buckets of cash left behind by Joe and Saad.
as far as 5 years goes, it's 2020 and contracts don't matter anymore.

I believe the only real query is his height / size as it doesn't really offer a POD size-wise to the rest of what we've got. Plus he's had some soft-tissue injuries.

Otherwise he's an inside midfielder, who enjoys activities such as aggressively winning the ball in congestion and feeding it to other midfielders, along with by all accounts being a strong leader. He also says he 'likes to model his game off Joel Selwood' which seems like a pretty good option to me.

Overall, assuming we don't have to trade anything too hefty, I'd say it's a good thing. We need to bolster our midfield depth, and it doesn't preclude us also pursuing trades for bigger midfielders, or drafting them.

I'm not a fan for a couple of reasons:

1. He's very similar to what we already have in there from my viewing, so a lack of POD.
2. We're supposedly offering him a 5 year deal so it'll take a first round pick to get him without a doubt
3. He's apparently been injury prone over the past few years, although andleanback and eDPS would know more on that front than I would.

Other people can like the decision, but I don't at all. I hope he proves me wrong.

I think he has the same dimensions and style as Cunnington before he became a crab, like a Cunnington/Selwood.

Why would that not be what we need?

He had some injuries in his first year, a calf strain i think, but he was injury free this year. Did a hamstring late in his draft year and missed the combine and had some injuries earlier in the year. Personally id rather have Caldwell 2 years advanced than take a pick 18-24 to the draft to grab a mid, he has higher upside than a lot of the mids in this draft. Just cant wait to see him play actually midfield time, got zero minutes at the giants.

Is out of contract.
Worst case, we turn Daniher into 16 & 17 and swap one for Caldwell.
GWS can make up anything Brisbane want in return.

On the POD part, as long as we go and land a couple in the draft now we should be ok
O'Driscoll, Trew, Carroll, Poulter - nab two of them on top of Caldwell and we have counter balanced our attacking pace with coalface mids (albeit young ones) & add a couple of taller ones to support Langford & Heppell (who aren't really pure inside mids)

In isolation doesn't help
Another piece of a broader picture, not so bad.

I'm not the one saying we shouldn't get him. I think he seems like a good addition to build depth in our genuine midfielders.

Knightmare had him pegged as a Shuey type - able to win it in congestion and with good acceleration.

Doesn't necessarily help our marking power through the middle of the ground, and also doesn't solve us lacking a >90kg body in the middle.

In the small amount I’ve seen of him he reminds me of current style Cotchin. Goes and gets it on the inside. Not tall but that doesn’t matter if he’s tough and can feed it out to Merrett, McGrath, Langford etc

I think he might be a free agent anyway under the lifetime free agency thing that they brought in. If not, I expect he'll get traded just so he doesn't have to wait as long to join a new club. DFA period is after the second list lodgement iirc

Cheers guys, appreciate the responses.

My main concern I guess would be the hamstrings, but i do like the sounds of his attack on the ball.

A quick analysis would be Id argue we dont have a "Selwood" type that goes in and wins the dirty ball.
Parish is good at gathering and distributing loose ball
Mcgrath is good at gathering and moving out of packs
Shiel is great moving away from a stoppage but doesn't throw himself on a ball.

If he is compared to a Selwood type and is a reasonable size (83kgs aint too bad at that age already) then I suppose we back him in.
If he has the temperament, does he need to be over 90kgs? Do we need that for the style we apparently be trying to play?

Caldwell nominating us is hardly bad news, he’s just not good enough to bend over backwards to get.

Stringer and Shiel type players you basically have to pounce on to keep up appearances and show the player and everyone else that you are fair dinkum. Sign of weakness if you don’t.

I’d be comfortable walking away from Caldwell if the asking price is too great at the trade table, as far as contract goes we may as well, need to pay someone.

A lucrative 5 year deal to an 11 game 20yr old. A smallish inside mid who we are promising centre square time to. How are we promising that? Remember Darcy Parish cant even get a full look in the square and he has proven clearance ability. Looks to me they are now competing for the same spot.

At least it has to take Phillips off the draft board. We simply cannot take him if we bring Caldwell in.

Do agree with Ethan, think he's very similar to parish and Shiel. But if he's good enough to push them out then welcome aboard. Hate to say "we didn't need Joel Selwood because we already had Darcy Parish"
I still have ptsd when we said "don't need to draft Cyril Rioli, we got Alwyn Davey and Leroy Jetta"
