Would hope merrett leaves then. Paying a guy 800-900K to play on a wing is ridiculous.
Not saying he spends all his time on the wing, just a greater split.

He’s better on the outside anyway.

I don't get this obsession with moving Heppell to half back? Why do we want one of our TWO midfielders who are capable of taking an overhead mark to move away from there? Especially with his lack of penetration by foot. We're much better served having him on the ball or on a wing.
We are going to need to move someone there. Smith worked well but the loss of Saad, McKennana and even Raz who was being given a run there leaves us a bit light on. I like Heppell on the wing personally but can't really visualise what our back 6 will look like.

Merrett and Smith say they will 'honour their contracts'

It's hardly an emphatic endorsement of their ongoing love for the club and it's environment...

I think we gotta move early and decisively
It could be worse, they could chose not to honour their contracts!

Francis - KPD1 - Ridley
Redman - KPD2 - Stoddart?

As well as a lockdown small. The two KPD roles can be filled by any of Ambrose, BZT, Hooker or Hurley for me. Let Stoddart and Redman play the less accountable roles to make sure we get plenty of use by foot.

Stoddard couldn’t get a game in a bottom 3 side and he’s walking into our starting 18?

In fairness, he was competing in the one area they were stacked in with Lloyd, Rampe, Mills, Dawson and O'Riordan all being AFL standard. We're losing our two best half backs and if we're bringing him in it's pretty clearly because we think he fills that need.

Rampe isn’t a flanker, he plays full back moreorless. Yeah they might have a few but if the player is good enough you get games. Especially as they were down the bottom and have a stack of injuries, you throw the kid in if you rate him and see what he has. Obviously they didn’t rate him at all.

Thought this too. And seeing that Robbo was saying that we had offered Zerrett an extension worth 800k-900k a year, i wonder if the big contract we have offered Dunkley is indicative of whether they expect Zerrett to be here past 2021.

The ideal rebuild edition...

Joe for 7 (Band 1)
Raz for 31
Saad & 31 for 8
6 for 16&17&Witherdon (Works out as Joe and 6 for 16&17&Witherdon)
2021 2nd for Caldwell
2021 3rd for Wright
7&8 for 11&13&18 (Cats)

Draft hand 11,13,16,17,18, Brand, Eyre + Wright, Caldwell, Witherdon traded in and maybe Stoddart as DFA
I'd be going with:

1. Daniher for picks 16 and 17
2. Saad and pick 17 for picks 7 and 27
3. Fantasia for pick 31
4. Hurley, picks 16, 27 and 31 for Dunkley and pick 12
5. Pick 6 for Caldwell and pick 11 (Cameron trade)
6. Guelfi for a future 3rd round pick
7. Future 3rd round pick for Wright
8. Pick 67 for Ronke

Net loss: Daniher, Saad, Fantasia, Hurley, Guelfi, picks 6 and 67
Net gain: Dunkley, Caldwell, Wright, Ronke, picks 7, 11 and 12

Clubs get things wrong. Not saying he will be a player but his speed and kicking skills makes me think he can turn out well as a half back. I might be wrong but he's certainly a type we need given we won't have Saad or McKenna in the side next year. I wouldn't mind if it were him or Duval or someone else.

A.k.a if we’re a basketcase again at the end of next season they’ll be looking elsewhere.

Do you realistically think that would get Dunks to your club?

I think it's more realistic than most of your thread saying Merrett and a first for Dunkley when Merrett is the clearly superior player

I didn't ask nor compare any fanciful deals that dogs posters had suggested. Do you genuinely believe your deal would be enough for the Dogs to let Dunks go?

Merrett for Dunks in a straight swap is reasonable imo.

Apologies if this has already been answered (my app is stuffed) but anyone here know how much you're offering Josh Dunkley?

I think if Dunkley really wanted out you'd have to consider what holes you have on the list. Hurley fills one of your two gaping holes for me (second key defender and ruck) and given Bevo's complete disregard for the ruck, you'd look to fill the key defensive spot. I'm one of very few that values Hurley as a first round choice for the right side, so yeah, I think it could get it done.

I think you've contradicted yourself here. Not sure this gets the job done either way. You could very well be spot on though!

Contract status of 2 years, makes it tough for the Dons though. You have to lay that on top of Dunkley is very much required, and if you watch some of the hub videos all the players refer to Dunks being the coach‘s favourite player.

I am not stupid enough to suggest it can’t happen, but I do think its very difficult. For me a Merrett - Dunkley straight swap is probably about right, but then you have to ask yourself, why would Dunkley want to move if Merrett wants out? This dogs list is the best in my lifetime and should be on the verge of challenging top 4 consistently for the next few years. Again, not saying impossible just saying this is what the Dons are up against and hence factors that probably inflate the price to a point Essendon probably walk away.

On face value, yeah probably. Lot's of intangibles behind the scenes that change Dunks value from within the dogs though imo. Bont's best friend, probably our VC next year, immense potential even though our coach plays him terribly, etc etc.

Merret would suit us great, though. Not sure he'd love being put on the wing which is the only space in the team open to him at this stage, however.

You guys got any small forwards bar Tippa that could be theoretically used as steak knives for Dunks? Hannan isn't the pressure forward type we need I don't think

Hurley won't win a flag with us, could with you guys. Happy to do the deal

I honestly don't get it. You have McLean playing off a flank due to necessity, wouldn't you be better off playing him in the middle alongside Macrae, Smith, Libba and Bont as your rotational inside mids? Filling that key defensive spot for me is the biggest need that Bevo won't ignore, bringing in Merrett doesn't help that.
