*This list doesn't include any current teams in the midst of being hated, due to the fact we are uncertain how high the ceiling of hatred can get*
Honourable Mentions
- West Coast Eagles 2006
- Melbourne 2009
- North Melbourne 1996-2000
5. Brisbane Lions 2003-2004
Let's not gloss over reality with nostalgia. This team was ruthless, and crossed the line multiple occasions. Alaistar Lynch's handling of the Wakelin situation in his final game was absolutely deplorable. Akermanis was a polarising figure that infuriated opposition supporters and not too mention the smugness of the GOAT Leigh Matthews didnt endear Brisbane to many. Let's not forget the merger between Fitzroy and The Bears meant this club had a fantastic opportunity to build a great list, players from both clubs enjoyed dynasty level success. Brisbane also knocked off Collingwood and Essendon in multiple Grand Finals and Richmond in a preliminary final. Port Adelaide although the top team of that era, couldn't translate their home and away success into premiership success until 2004. You've got four of the most vile, passionate supporter bases that you have denied again and again of the ultimate glory- always gonna make this list. Only once the era was over, did this team win the admiration of their rivals.
4. Sydney Swans 2005-2013
COLA - Buddy - Hall knock out of Stakes - Adam Goodes, not much more needs to be said about the disdain directed at Sydney. Which reached fever pitch when they made a grand final and then poached the biggest player in the game. Absolutely filthy scenes on social media.
3. Hawthorn 2013-2017
Success builds envy, jealously, hatred and an inability for your rivals to acknowledge greatness. This club and this team, continuously clipped by rivals, especially Geelong supporters who were absolutely disgusted they couldn't go back to back in 2008 due to a fat Stewie Dew carving them up in the third quarter. Hawthorn's continuous success from the 70s, 80s and recent, made their opposition lose hope their team would ever win one over this great club. Since Hawthorns first premiership in 1961 - They've won 13 (thirteeeeeeeen) whilst the 'great' Collingwood won only 1990 and 2010. That begins to just scratch the surface of this hatred.
2. Carlton 1995-2002
Colin Carter on his exit interview for Geelong didnt hold back - although Carlton won that grand final by 10 goals, he was absolutely filthy to find out that they breached the salary cap in 1995. Due to the precedent set in 1993 with Essendon's breached cap (AFL fined them, they didnt lose their premiership) the AFL did the same to Carlton. This all came to a head by 2002 when the AFL had no choice but to fine and strip Carlton of draft picks. AFL fans are a divisive bunch, fickle, salty like the seas of the Mediterranean, but what they gets them to unite - is cheating. This Carlton administration was caught with their pants down, never having won a wooden spoon for over 100 years, theyve won five since the fallout of that salary cap scandal and havent come close to a 17th premiership.
1. Essendon 1993-2013
I do not need to delve too deep into this one because of how raw the wound is. Essendon is still trying to recover, pick up the pieces from the fallout of this disaster, and best I can do is be respectful to their supporters and allow the club time to do so. Once they do - we can lay in the boots, much like an earthquake, the damage was severe but for the Bombers, the tsunami came soon afterwards.
