I always hoped he'd crack the NBA. Gun player.

He can't shoot a free throw to save himself......

..... so you'd think he'd be a certainty

With his much improved shooting these days I'm sure he'd be good enough, not that it will happen.

Geez he's a good player.

Would he make the Aussie all time starting five at SF?

All-time starting 5...Id assume would be Longley/Vlahov/MacKinnon/Smyth/Gaze or something along those lines...but either way hes in career best form, and showed so at the WC last year. But still, Anstey had his way with him on D tonight.

True but Anstey is a C and a listed 16cm taller.

McKinnons stats this year are outstanding

20pts 9 reb's 4 asst 51%fg 47%3p  1.8st 1.4 bl 58% FT

If there are 2 players I thought could have had an impact at NBA level, he and Simon Dwight were most likely. Lifetime 35% 3 point shooter too but his D is his strength.

Overrated player.

Not even a pure baller. Just a veritcal leap. How ugly is that jump shot?

You know that describing Shawn Marion kinda wrecks your argument right?

wasnt he supposed to be the great white hope and then got injured? i remember him putting on a little show against the usa team in the warm up to the 2000 games. the usa media reckoned he beat carter!

could he have made the nba? certainly athletic enough. but the nba is about opportunity and chance. how else do you explain adam keefe, rafer araujo etc.

SMAC = absolute gun, not sure how he'd go in the NBA, but still easily starting 5 in Aus

Sam was a fraction short, and had injuries at inopportune times.

Simon Dwight was just too soft. for example, charlotte - back when they were still the hornets - offered him a contract; but they were gonna red shirt him the whole season. i.e. keep him on injury list, so they could work him out over the year, develop him etc.
the wimp said no. he never got another chance.

Soft and a wimp or just stupid?

Do you like Shawn Marion?

Are you kidding he's like a superhero disguised as a role player. He's a great defender when he isn't forced to play on huge PF's and he gets 20 points without having to have much of the ball. What's not to like?

Mackinnon claims MVP

NBL

Brisbane Bullets captain Sam Mackinnon has capped off a stunning year by winning the NBL's Philips Most Valuable Player award, the Andrew Gaze Trophy, for the 2006/07 season.

The 197cm Australian, who was also recently named the NBL’s Best Defensive Player, polled 141 votes to finish narrowly ahead of Cairns Taipans star Martin Cattalini (139) and New Zealand Breakers American import Carlos Powell (132). Rounding out the top five in voting were Melbourne Tiger Chris Anstey (101) and Perth Wildcat Shawn Redhage (100).

Bullets captain Mackinnon is currently leading his team in the 2007 Philips Championship Grand Final series against Anstey’s Tigers. The best-of-five series is tied at 1-1 with Game Three scheduled to be played at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Boondall on Wednesday at 7:40pm.

No stranger to awards, Mackinnon won Rookie of the Year with the South East Melbourne Magic in 1994, was repeatedly named to All-NBL Teams in the late 1990s, and was named to the All-NBL Second Team last season. Currently in his second year with the Bullets, this is however Mackinnon’s first league MVP award and could fuel speculation that a tilt at the US-based NBA may be not be out of the question.

This season, Mackinnon has led Brisbane to their best-ever win-loss record, as well as a League record 21-game winning streak that was only snapped by the Tigers in Game Two of the Grand Final series on Sunday. Mackinnon’s Bullets remain favourites to win the title, which would be Brisbane’s first championship in 20 years.

During the regular season, Mackinnon averaged 19.7 points per game, 9.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.4 blocks as he led the Bullets to a 28-5 record. He shot an impressive 51% from the floor and 47% from beyond the three-point arc.

Playing in all 33 regular season games for the Bullets, Mackinnon was named the Philips Player of the Week in Round 14.

Mackinnon was delighted to be named MVP and said it was an honour to be amongst some of the NBL’s greatest players who had previously won the award.

“This is certainly the highest individual award I have ever won in my career. I remember my first few years in the NBL, watching Andrew Gaze win this award and looking up to him, so it is certainly an honour to be on this list,” Mackinnon said.

“Right now there are a lot of things going on so it will be hard to enjoy the award but hopefully we as a team can go one step further and make it a memorable year for everyone.”

Mackinnon said the Bullets remained confident they can take a 2-1 lead in the Grand Final Series on Wednesday night despite losing in Melbourne on Sunday.

“Sunday was our first loss in a few months but that isn’t going to halt our confidence. We know we have the home court advantage and we know we can win, so we are looking forward to Wednesday night’s clash.”

Mackinnon will receive the MVP award at the annual NBL awards dinner in Sydney on the night of Friday 16 March.

Jason Smiths jump shot is a lot uglier than his twin brothers.

Matrix is a very good player but not a favourite of mine. His jumpshot makes me wanna gouge my eyes out. To compare MacKinnon with Matrix is a joke. I'll have Matrix in my fantasy team any time but I'd have plenty of other players above him in real life.
