So would I, but that is only useful when they're competing for the same ball. Cuningham isn't going to put himself in the position to be competing for the ball often enough without someone leading him there.

For me, too if I'm forced to choose. However, I disagree intensely with how they've been using both Dow and Cuningham; both are midfielders, and have been better options than Murphy for the last 2 years. There is no reason why both can't attend stoppages and ballups much more than they do.
Who do they surplant?

I met him once after game in rooms. He thinks his sh*t doesn’t stink. I guess he is AFL standard, but not a genuinely “top bloke”.

take Heath Scotland, now there’s a top bloke.
The same Scotland with a solid track record of belting people?
I'd take a bit of self-satisfaction over that tbh..

Anyone heard anything about Oliver? I know there was a bit of talk last trade period about us wanting him...

HSUN have a headline.. "He (Oliver) was thrown up as a likely target for rival clubs last year but brilliant ball-winner Clayton Oliver has made a big commitment to Melbourne after a red-hot start to the season."

Paywall is stopping me from seeing the article which i have no doubt will be absolute rubbish but just thought i'd check in with our ITKs if they have heard anything?

Just signed a contract extension until end of 2023.

Who do they surplant?
Is it a process of supplanting someone?

We use our premier midfielders more than any other side. The relative strength of midfields like Brisbane, WC, Collingwood, WB is that they have so many players they can roll through there without a loss of productivity; it didn't start out that way for them, but they persevered with groups of players, and it bore fruit for them in time.

Secondly, Cuningham should be played in the twos as a run with player, with the eventual aim of swapping Ed for him. He doesn't have natural ballsense, but he is quite possibly our best player one on one. Keeping it simple could very well be the making of him.

Dow also needs to be dropped, but he didn't at the beginning of the season. He was building quite nicely, before being banished in round 2 from the midfield to the forward flank, something which is not his go. I am hoping that he, like SPS, is there for development reasons; he's there to learn forward positioning, goalkicking, etc. I'm not talking about him being in there for Cripps-esque numbers, bit I am certainly talking about him being in there for more than 6% of stoppages.

I have a theory, which - admittedly - comes from my cricket background. See, some teams which during the year are more than fine running around with three bowlers taking all the wickets suddenly find themselves up against it because one of them has a bad day in finals. For you to be a real threat, you need 5-6 bowlers capable of chipping in, otherwise you won't live past that one bad day.

You look at how, in 2011, our mids and KPP were dropping like flies and we didn't have the backup. You look at the reasons why St Kilda and Freo dropped multiple grand finals against much broader midfields. You look at how it was only when Richmond added Prestia, Caddy, Townsend in a preseason, that all of a sudden they seemed to bat pretty deep too.

I think if you're going to play young mids or forwards, you need to play them as midfielders or forwards. You cannot just keep shoving a round peg into a square hole. I'm not saying you need to play them in the midfield the whole time - or play them before they're ready - but you can't just leave them wasting away on a flank because you keep trading in people in front of them.

Either trade them out, or work with them to achieve something productive. What we have right now is the worst of all worlds; players who don't contribute in their selected position because they're not suited for it, and main players who we'll collapse without because there's no support.

All Oliver needed was a 4-0 start to convince him. 😂

Yep. A winning club is a happy club.

4-0 sure beats their uninspiring, backwards-looking, football from last year.

Heater was a very good fella, as was big Lance.
Simmo should ask himself why he was passed over for captain when they put Murphy in

I'll never forget my 7-8yo son meeting Lance at a family day. I brought my video camera along. Without being asked, Lance started playing with him, handballing, kicking and then tackling him when he had the ball. Lifted him up and spun him in the air a couple of times. I was taken aback by just how much he chose to engage with my son. The experience wouldve lasted a couple of minutes. My son couldn't wait to tell his mum he'd played a game of footy with Lance Whitnall

So much for Clayton Oliver. Glad that's not gonna drag on next off season.

Want one of our own developing mids to step up anyway. We have enough there on the list. Some just need to make the grade

Kelly or Merrett might bob up at the end of this year but do I hope a couple of the youngsters take the next step.

We've just added Martin and Williams the last two years on decent coin.

Cripps and Walsh are already A grade.

Some of these below guys gotta go to the next level-
Fogarty (think he's the one. Can be a full time mid)
Dow (looked good in the off season but still not elevating)
LOB (bust)
Stocker (needs opportunity)
Cunningham (needs opportunity and to stay fit)
Philp (i like him. Think he will be a Cotrell with more party tricks)
Carroll (1st year has time)
Kennedy (moved to rookie list.. days looking numbered)

Well Martins is fairly reasonable now given it was heavily front loaded. Isn't he "only" on like $600k now? I don't know if Williams was as well but I wouldn't be surprised, it seems to be how we're working our FA contracts right now.

Wouldn't be surprised if we still have a dece amount this off-season.
