Player Watch Mid-Season Pick #13 (2021) - Jed McEntee

Right now wouldn't be too hard on him.

Pretty difficult to come in and go bang when you don't know the structures, don't know people etc. Would give him a few games to learn a few things. He has come in when we are down a few as well and asked to play a role when we ain't exactly using the ball well.

Saw him after the game and he is a good lad. Knows why he was picked and is willing to work hard.

I think he can make it.

It was inevitable that the club would try to turn a rapidly improving centre square mid into a nothing small forward. Everyone said it was a bad idea, but the club did it anyway. Just play him in the bloody centre square mid position he knows, and see what we unearth.

Exactly this! Why not just realise we have a shortage of pressure forwards now and draft an 18 year old who has played that position his whole life in the next national draft and give Jed a spot in his natural role. Imagine being drafted and told ‘sorry mate you aren’t good enough at what the position you’ve been playing your whole life. Here! Try this role which doesn’t suit you at all and you have no nous for! He must be feeling a bit betrayed tbh.

Hes basically playing the role that made Boak invisible.

Give him a chance.

Ah the dreaded "Half Forward Flank of Oblivion" role that Hinkley can't get to sleep at night without knowing he's got covered. Who will run all those meaningless kilometres, touching the ball 10-20 times when they're too gassed to kick over a coke can?

Did it to Sam Gray. Got Brownlow votes playing in the middle, but you know, let’s play him in the pressure forward role as a tall marking forward. Insanity.

I'm still disappointed we didn't just pick the best ready to go player. Hopefully McEntee has a great preseason and impacts for us next year, but he was never playing this year and right now we're crying out for ready to go talent.

Thought he was ignored completely by his new teammates 3 or 4 times, on Sunday, when he was probably a better option or giving him a handball meant he would have disposed of the ball under less pressure.

I thought he looked good in his five minutes. Manic attack on the man. Didn't look out of place.

Does the same in the SANFL. Does a lot of tackling but needs to consistently do more than that. Good luck to him but I didn't think he wasn't performing that well for a call up. Most of the Magpies are not performing too well anyway, at least not for the past handful of games, so in comparison to others plus umpteen injuries he got a go.
We not only have out of form players in the AFL side, we have them in the SANFL side too.
