Jordy was easily best for us.
Hosky
Quaynor
Madge
Crispy but only for late contribution.

Was not happy with midfield other than Jordy D. Steele cleaned up Pendles and Adams slaughtered the ball.

Yes, a very difficult game to judge best, how much do you weight contributions later in the game.

JDG clearly our best
IQ
Madge
Pendles
Noble

I thought Noble defended well this week ( seemed to play on Butler a bit and kept him well covered ) and eliminated errors although he didn't seem to be the guy we gave the ball too on overlap as much.

I agree with Jordy but can I ask how you weight opponents of our blokes? Our mids were smashed when the game counted. Even the coach concedes this. So can I ask on what basis you rate the contribution of Pendles opponent?

Milo, i included Pendles in my votes too. I did so on the basis not because he had a great game but rather he was OK but was far and away our best clearance player. We were smashed in that area but i thought the captain was pretty good in that capacity.

Fair enough but the coach and commentators thought we were smashed around the ball and he is a bit part of it which was why I was curious. I saw him get some clearances but I thought by foot he was not that great today but of course he had mates.

Thats a very fair point, this is still subject to change. Pendles however went at 90% efficiency which was solid enough on a day where I thought De Goey was our only good player.

5 Jordan de Goey
4 Taylor Adams
3 Scott Pendlebury

First Quarter

Grundy v Ryder, Pendles v Steele, De Goey v Ross and Adams v Dunstan Noble v Butler, Mayne v M Wood, Maynard v Membrey, Madgen v Marshall, Roughie v King and IQ v Higgins Wings - Sidey v McKenzie and Poulter on other wing. Daicos at half forward v Hill, Elliott v Webster

Observations -

*Poulter is our spare at most of the stoppages that quarter but is pretty ineffective. (For the first quarter he has 1 disposal and that 1 disposal is ineffective)

*13 minutes left in first quarter. First 7 minutes should be erased. Stoppage in StKildas forward line. Maynard for whatever reason does not get close enough to Membrey at the stoppage. Maynard wants to hedge his bets it seems - wants to have enough space to win the ball but also wants to defend Membrey. The tap from the stoppage is hit to a space where we have four players IQ is ball side of Higgins, Poulter is ball side of the contest with Butler and Noble behind him, Madgen is free. Maynard is closer to the contest than Membrey. Pendles is behind Ryder with Dunstan and Adams near by. De Goey is on Steele. Prior to Membrey receiving the ball you can see Maynard pointing for someone else to pick up Membrey (possibly Madgen).

Bottom line is we should have cleared that stoppage. We had the numbers but were a tad sloppy. Poulter and Madgen both ineffective as the spare players. Maynard probably needed to keep it simple and just worry about Membrey.

*Grundy drops a relatively easy mark (despite it being windy) in defence - literally only Collingwood players around (Roughie held Membrey to prevent him from getting to contest).

*Hill loses Daicos too easily around the ground. Bianco gets moved onto Hill later in the quarter but that is an even worse match up. Then at stoppages it varies. Not for the first time we are getting destroyed by a half back flanker. It then looks like Adams is responsible for Hill. Even though Thomas is not amazing, Harvey by now (3 minutes left in quarter) surely should have put Thomas in a negating role on Hill?

*Stoppage on the wing - Darcy Cameron v Ryder - Dunstan is on De Goey, Adams is at stoppage, Hill is about 10m from Daicos, WHE v Steele. Adams v Ross. Dunstan must push off De Goey as he just charges through the stoppage easily, collects the tap from Ryder and kicks long.

*Elliott can beat his opponent in so many different ways. You really need to put a bona fide defender on him. StKilda put Webster which imo favours Elliott.

*Dunstan really is a bad kick even by our standards

*The non Grundy mark comedy of errors. The umpire blows the whistle to pay the mark but calls play on (they show another angle where it looks like Grundy attempted to handball but did not connect with the ball?), Steele has the ball and then drops it on the ground as he believes its a mark to Grundy? If it really is play on then Steele should have been penalised for incorrect disposal? Higgins continues with the play, handballs to Dunstan, who does a chip kick of sorts (ugly), McKenzie gathers and goals.

*Grundy is way too good so far for Marshall in the ruck - whether it be at centre bounces or stoppages. Ryder on the other hand looks better at centre bounces and around the ground is even.

*IQ - takes in intercept mark deep in defence. We decide to exit through Madgen on the southern stand side of ground. Hill is already free and is a spare player guarding space. Madgen just does an up and under kick to no one in particular on the wing. Hill is still free and moving towards where the fall of the ball will be. The kick from Madgen favours Highmore and Cox in the end has to get back and spoil the ball lol. At this stage Noble is on Higgins. After a small passage of play Hill ends up receiving the ball - Noble at this stage forgets about Higgins and decides to go meet Hill. Murphy is a spare in our defence, as is Pendles. Grundy is way too slow in getting back into defence - zero urgency. Hill delivers a neat pass inside 50m but the two Saints players spoil themselves. Higgins ends up snapping the goal. Despite having two "spare players", Chris Mayne has to defend both Long and Billings.

How on earth has Harvey allowed Hill to run around unattended? Why is Madgen our outlet from defence? Why does Murphy look so lost? Why is Grundy so slow to get back into defence. Defensive set up looked shambolic on that occassion.

*Hill 14 disposals at 93%

End of Quarter.

Second Quarter

Grundy v Ryder, Pendles v B Couch, Crisp v Steele and Adams v Dunstan.

Observations -

* Murphy gets a free kick on the wing and takes an eternity to decide what to do with the ball. StKilda have a spare in Highmore who marks. At this stage of the game Thomas appears to be accountable for Hill, if Hill is in the defensive 50m. If Hill rolls up into midfield then he is the responsibility of Sidebottom. Hill is outside of 50m therefore Thomas is free. Thomas should have made Highmore accountable and ensured the ball came to ground. Grundy is about 40m from goal in the corridor but does not impact the contest. The kick from Murphy is to about 40m from our goal about 15m in from boundary. Hughmore as the spare player marks the ball. (Dougal Howard does a good job of leaning/pushing into Cameron so that Cameron cannot make the contest.)

* WHE (is on Sinclair) and Daicos (on Billings) do not appear to read the danger spots in defence and/or have no regard to their opponents. Murphy (on Mason Wood) half the time looks like he is just going through the motions. Madgen is on Long. Saints have two or three players i.e. Long, Sinclair, Billings and Long ends up taking a mark. Credit to Mason Wood who put in two or three efforts while Murphy did not impact anything. Luckily Long missed and only kicks a point.

*Maynard is on Membrey. There is about a minute left in the quarter and we are bringing the ball up the ground. Maynard and Membrey both had a decision to make. Membrey makes the decision to drop back into defence. Maynard follows the contest, hoping to get involved. Pendlebury is the player that eventually delivers the ball inside 50m - looking to hit up Sidey who is running inside 50m in the corridor. De Goey is held out of contest. Sidey decides to wait for the crumb. That allows Membrey to mark uncontested.

*Brad Hill was opposed to Thomas and Sidebottom that quarter.

*Our stoppage work overall has been poor. It has not really cost us yet on the scoreboard. It has been too easy for Dunstan or Crouch to charge through a stoppage.

End of Second Quarter.

Third Quarter

Grundy v Ryder, Pendles v Steele, Adams v Dunstan and Sidey v Crouch.

*Murphy starts the quarter on Brad Hill, Madgen is at full back on Marshall.

*For the first time in the Robert Harvey era, Sidey starts a centre bounce.

*First centre bounce and the Saints manage to get the ball into their forward 50m and we manage to force a stoppage about 20m from their goal. Our set up is a little bit of a mess. WHE is our spare at the defensive side of stoppage. As Marshall is contesting the ruck against Grundy, Madgen runs to attend Membrey who is at stoppage, as Maynard is trying to block Marshall. Adams is on Crouch. Sidey v Steele.
Madgen manages to reach Membrey before the ball is contested Grundy and Marshall. Membrey loses Madgen way too easily. Membrey is now charging towards goal. Maynard is now focussed on the stoppage, as is Madgen. Marshall and Grundy both want to hit the ball to the same spot - Adams v Crouch. Crouch cleverly ducks to avoid Adams and Grundy - kicks hurredly out of the pack to Membrey who catches the ball (not required distance for a mark) about 10m from goal and snaps truly. GOAL StKilda. Maynard to his credit was near by but could only push Membrey. Once again our spare player (this time WHE) is ineffectual. Madgen just looks like a headless chicken sometimes.

* A big last minute of second quarter and first minute of third quarter for Membrey.

*Ryder is having the better of Grundy at the centre bounces.

*Out of bounds on the full - 50m boundary line at StKildas attacking end. Adams takes a risk and kicks the ball sideways into the corridor. Mayne takes a good mark. Ideally after taking such a risk to get the ball into the corridor, you would continue that way. However, Mayne is called to play on and kicks sideways to Roughie. Roughie then has a brain fade and kicks the ball short straight to a Saints player in Marshall. It looks like he was aiming for Madgen.
So all that risk only to either have Roughie or Madgen being the exit kick outside of 50. LOL FFS. Luckily Membrey spills an easy mark. Ends up being a rushed point to Long.

*The subsequent kick out could have been taken by Crisp or IQ (run and carry players) but ends up being taken by Mayne. Mayne spots up a free player in WHE about 70m from our goal but his kick does not have carry and McKenzie takes the intercept mark.

*Marshall loses Madgen way too easily (there were no blocks set by StKilda players) and takes a big contested mark against Roughie (left King to try and help). Goal StKilda.

*A horrendous start to the second half. Still 16 minutes left in the quarter

*Some of the decision making. Wowsers. Roughie takes a mark about 15m from StKildas goal. In the corridor about 20m away he has De Goey in space and Noble in space. King is lurking about 5m in front of Noble. For some reason he decides to choose the Noble option over De Goey. The kick is given too much air and four Saints converge on Noble. Steele makes the spoil. Luckily it amounts to nothing. But another example of poor decision making and execution from the back half.

*When we have a rare forward entry, Hill is inside our forward 50m and seems accountable for Thomas. Crisp eventually has the inside 50m - Thomas and Hill both together near the 50m line. StKilda clean up through Webster and by this stage Hill has found plenty of space and is on the wing all by himself. The "handover" with Hill when he leaves our defensive arc to middle of ground just does not work.

*Dougal Howard has the kick out for the Saints. The kick goes towards the MCC members where Dunstan is against Murphy. At this stage Membrey is opposed to Madgen about 80m from our goal. Murphy manages to spoil. Bianco slips over and that allows Connolly to collect the ball. At this stage Sidey is opposed to Steele and they are locking arms nearby. When the ball gets to Membrey he is about 80m from the Saints goal and Madgen is about 25m away. The closest player to Membrey is IQ. Membrey kicks more to a spot (50m on the flank) rather than looking and pin pointing a pass. At this stage Steele and Sidey are about 70m from the Saints goal. Roughie is matched up against Long. line. King has run into the 50m and Cameron is tracking him back but Cameron also has Marshall by himself about 15m to his left. Long ends up marking at the 50m. Steele runs boundary side of Long while Sidey elects to run corridor side. By the time Sidey realises that Steele is going to receive the handball its too late. King is at the top of the goal square in 10m of space - Cameron is the closest. Something clearly went wrong with the match ups as Cameron at this stage was meant to be opposed to Marshall (Grundy is off the ground). King marks strongly about 5m from goal. GOAL StKilda

* Marshall attends the next centre bounce and Ryder is now up forward. A rare passage of play through the corridor opens up the play. De Geoy hits up Cox about 80m from our goal. To his left he has Elliott who is free. To his right he has Bianco. Saints have three players spread across the 50m line. Sidebottom is charging towards goal and is goal side of his opponent. We butcher a rare forward 50m entry (Poulters kick inside 50m ends up being smothered). Jack Steele is now roaming free. Daicos at this stage look completely out of petrol tickets.

*I actually feel sorry for Poulter. Has a kick smothered, next kick he is tackled as he kicks and then he is pinged for holding the ball (a tad unlucky). (We had a 6 on 3 and still lost). Butler has a set shot from about 35m out from goal. You would assume he would make the distance but surely you at least get a player or two on the goal line, just in case. Nope.

*Another holding the ball this time against Mayne, about 45m from Saints goal. Grundy is opposed to Ryder and both around 55m from Saints goal. Grundy does the right thing and heads towards goal square) - Ryder slips to the corridor about 35m from goal and no one else bothers to cover him. Ross looks inside and spots up Ryder. You have Murphy standing at the 50m just being a spectator. Mayne falls asleep. Adams is telling Mayne don't worry about giving away the free. Ryder kicks his second goal for the quarter.
By this stage Marshall/Ryder have worn down Grundy.

*Umps must have felt sorry for us by this stage. Next centre bounce - Free kick Pendles for holding, advantage paid - free kick for holding, advantage and Daicos goal. Maybe channel 7 wanted another advert lol. Assist to Ray Chamberlain for that goal.
Our only two goals for the quarter are from advantages being paid.

*That quarter was noncompetitive for the most part.

End of third quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Cameron v Marshall, Pendles v Steele, De Goey v Crouch and Adams v Dunstan. Macrae ends up attending the final 3 centre bounces for the match.

Observations -

* First significant move by Harvey is starting Cameron in the ruck. Grundy starts up forward (Ryder starts the quarter on the bench - probably a sign that the Saints are happy with the state of the game)

*Ryder attends the second centre bounce but Harvey is happy to keep Darcy Cameron at the centre bounce. Cox is now on the ground and playing forward (looks like Grundy is now off). Ryder out jumps Cameron and wins the hit out. The umpires all game have been throwing the ball up, and that predictability of ball probably helps a ruckman like Ryder.

*Grundy comes back on for the centre bounce with 12 minutes left in the game. Sidey is now in the middle (Daicos off with a finger issue and subbed out) and is opposed to the other Steele.

*Poulter who up until this point (7 minutes left in the game) had been poor, nails a great kick (30 m from Saints good) into the corridor. There were Saints players lurking close by but the kick to Elliott was precise. That opens up the play and the result is a mark to Cox. Credit to Cox for working back hard towards goal to create that space. The end result is actually a point to Mihocek (Cox passed). But the transition from defence was much better.

*Harvey puts Macrae in the middle straight away. Macrae nails a beautiful inside 50m pass to Thomas. Thomas misses a relatively simple shot.

*Amazing what happens when there is a bit of urgency. Mayne from the kick out actually runs with the ball and kicks long up the middle to the centre of the ground.

*Overall when it mattered StKilda were much more dominant at the stoppages - we were forced to defend deep and we do not have the skills in the back half to transition the ball. Skills are deplorable. Whereas if we win the stoppages like we did last week against Fremantle then we look okay.

End of Match.
