I'd say a big percentage have hedged their bets, continuing to live and work overseas by choice. I know several people who fall in that category

To be fair, you'd have to keep working if you were over there because clearly the people who have the money just buy a ticket and come home.

The stat I'd be most interested in is how long it has been since these people last stepped foot in Australia.

I know of someone who was able to fly overseas, attend a funeral, return, quarantine and is now freely back living again - all in the space of 8 weeks.

I agree that it's difficult to get real data on how dangerous it is for younger people - but the numbers we do have show that whilst the flu kills an estimated 300,000-650,000 people every year, COVID killed an estimated 3,000,000 in a year when the whole planet was largely locked down.

It's clearly far, far worse than the flu.

COVID has killed 5 times more people than the flu does in a year - all whilst lockdowns have been in place. These same restrictions and measures have pretty much eradicated the flu.

So being a seasonal virus seems completely irrelevant to the debate.


The question is how many young people would die if we opened up? We know old people are vulnerable, but what about everyone else?

"It's clearly far, far worse than the flu" The figures don't back that up. Covid has NOT killed 5 times more people than the flu in Australia. The Flu seasons 2017- 2019 were devastating with massive loss of life while a vaccine was available at your local Chemist Warehouse! 4,000 people were hospitalised. 804 deaths in 2017 and 812 in 2019. 529 in NSW alone in 2017. The median age of deaths notified was 86 years! But no one knows that because the media didn't tell anyone? Source: Australian Department of Health 2019 Influenza Season summary. As of 19/7/21, there are 102 people in hospital and 28 in ICU in ALL of Australia! We have 2,378 available intensive care beds. meanwhile, SA panics over 4 cases, just 13 cases today in Victoria and the media madness commences again in about an hour.
The Premiers are out of control with one of them in Tokyo on a jaunt putting their hand up for an event no one wants and there is only one bidder. "fingers crossed we'll be successful" says the Qld Queen. There are no other options, what madness is she crapping on about? The mind boggles! Gladys and her minister of health bozo have no idea how to handle it! Dan the Man is about to extend the Victoria lockdown because "it's a huge challenge" and the marshmallow in SA is feeling lonely! McClown in WA just cuts everyone off.
Today's presser will be no different to yesterday and the asphyxiation of Australian life is far worse than the morons in charge will ever admit too.

Why lockdown when there have been so few deaths?

Well, why give financial support to businesses when the economy has done fine in the pandemic?

Its almost like the policies implemented have worked.

Then why is small business and the entertainment, hospitality industry near-bankrupt? My business is ruined, why ae the streets deserted, construction shut down, events cancelled or in chaos? Policies? The spin has just commenced for the day and if you believe anything they say, then i'm convinced you believe in fairies! The lies are astounding, the NSW health officer just told some whoppers!

So let me try to understand your rationale here:

The Flu killed 804 people in 2017, (no data provided) in 2018 & 812 people in 2019 despite Australia putting no restrictions in place to prevent the spread.

Yet in 2020 COVID killed 909 Australians despite all the lockdowns & restrictions put in place. Imagine how much higher that number would've been if we "let it rip" and spread throughout our community the same way we do the flu?

Economic growth is the equivalent of deaths.

A plain measure, the most important one for sure but not the only one.

It’s also heavily impacted by policy.

Do you think we would’ve had 900 deaths if we didn’t lock down ever?

But the data is compromised.

If you just looked at deaths in isolation, if the nursing home shitshow here never happened, you could draw the conclusion that it isn't dangerous to old people either. But we know that's not the case.

It's foolish to look at raw numbers to draw conclusions.

Similar to basing your views on case numbers alone.

Why would you measure flu deaths during non-lockdown periods, with COVID deaths during lockdown periods??

But you just said we have had economic and health outcomes that are outstanding and worked.

And you're right. We have been protected from the covid deaths by shutting the international border and our economy has benefited from that.

Australia is right at the tippy top of the world for covid outcomes, as is NZ - which is why both are at the bottom of the vaccine rollouts.

We should wait and see how the opened up rest of the world does in their winter this Christmas before celebrating too hard.

The rationale is simple. The Covid death figure includes the Victorian deaths of 820 in aged care facilities. it was lockdown for several months. NSW has had 58 since March 2020. They had 529 Flu deaths alone in 2017!

So based off that information I'd say that lockdown restrictions, border closures, etc. were effective.

The rationale is also stupid. Victoria had the most deaths because we waited until we got to over 100 cases per day before implementing any sort of lockdown, and then 500 cases per day before implementing one that worked.

Why are there lockdowns in SA commencing tonight with 4 cases? Victoria locked down for another 7 days. Flu deaths occurred in 2017 - 2019 with vaccinations available at your local Chemist Warehouse. Australia has Covid deaths since January 1st is 5. South Australia has had 4 deaths since March 2020! Locked down from tonight. Why is a very good word to use? The question that is never answered is who dies from Covid or with it? As of today, our sporting seasons are now in jeopardy, life in general for many is in jeopardy, make sure you get your permits to live!
