Sounds like the pies have settled on the brother of a famous rally car driver

Thanks for the info Forty3.
If it’s McRae then he may be an astute choice. Certainly has a winning pedigree as player and assistant.
Onto our search - can you shed any light on whether or not Clarko is still chance? Many seem to be indicating Ross is almost over the line, going as far as detailing his choices for assistants. I’m still holding out hope for Clarko.

Did you follow the SANFL in the early 80's? In 1984 he took Norwood from fifth at the end of the minor premiership to premiers, the first to do so in SANFL history. I can't remember any outbursts but it is a long time ago.

I was l born in 1980 so his run in the SANFL was before my time.

I vividly remember how he was treated as the Melbourne coach in the media. It doomed him as a head coach in the AFL almost as much as Melbourne's poor to average teams did. He was treated with disrespect and tarnished his reputation to the point that when he got his next golden opportunity there were articles attacking the move which he proved wrong.

I think the club/the board/the reviewers or whoever you want to blame are doing the right thing overall but are butchering the process of doing it.

They are probably right in that Teagues isn't the man. He decided to keep all assistant coaches so he can't blame lack of support there. The review supposedly spoke to players and other staffers and if all that evidence has come to the conclusion that Teague is out, then just backing him in and hoping for the best is dumb, despite Hardwick and other cases of being backed in paying off. They were kept because the review showed they were good enough and it was the support that was wrong. If the info here is Teague is no good then he needs to go. It's a pretty simple distinction, just because a few coaches being kept paid off doesn't mean they all will. If enough evidence is in that he's not good enough then moving on, albeit quickly, is the right choice.

Conversely, the club has butchered the handling of it. Leaks seemingly everywhere would be devastating for Teague. While the club itself hasn't entertained all this "Ross Lyon confirmed" or "They're big into Clarkson" they have obviously let things slip out the back end which is awful, and given Teagues outbursts they've clearly not communicated well with him either.

Imo the club is doing the right thing but they are handling it like complete amateurs.
The review process started with Pavlich giving insights via his various media duties. Not telling him explicitely to make no public comment in itself is indicative of the serious lack of preparation that went into the review.
Like most things our club has done in the past 20 years, we couldn't even set up a dodgy review properly.

It's Teague's 100th game against GWS this weekend - 50 as a player, 50 as coach.

Does that mean we can recruit his kids as father-son/daughter playing coach?

I can't say I'm thrilled with the rumour of Leppitsch as Head of Football.

The role has more responsibilities (admittedly administrative) than head coach.

There'd be hiring and firing. Ultimately in charge of fitness, training, player welfare. Staying on top of list management and salary cap, mediating between coach and recruiters, mediating between the ceo and coach, presenting to the board. And so much more.

You'd need vision, strategy, leadership, people skills, operational and administration competence.

I don't know Leppitsch from a bar of soap. He was a gun player and has some (assistant) coaching chops. I can't put my finger on it, but something just doesn't feel right with him being proposed as Footy Manager. Maybe I'm not convinced he's got the CV/skills to match the job.

And before you ask, I don't have any better suggestions. Might need to ruminate further on this one.

A year's mid-level experience in Footy Dept operations might be useful grounding to really understand the scope of the job, even for someone who's spent 30 years inside footy departments as player and coach.

Good luck finding a comprehensive recruitment process if we, as expected, announce Teague's sacking on Monday.

Blind Freddy can see that we seem to have narrowed it down to two already and, while it still could be either, the fact that the second placed candidate has publicly announced that he wants the job probably means that we're not going to waste a lot of time sitting through any other powerpoint presentation.

At least these two candidates have some sort of CV.

I would say Blunt not arrogant.

People don't like to be 'told', its just human nature...
He didn't like it when Eddie tried to explain something to him. Classic moment.:D

This part interested me (haven’t seen the footage yet in WA);

RL: Yes, certainly take the call and consider it. I am aware, there’s enough Carlton people, famous Carlton people, premiership players, coaches, ex-champions that are advocating in a sense because they’ve worked with me or know me personally and understand their club and there’s those sort of connections, so I do know that’s occurring as well.

I assume SOS is part of this due to their relationship (business I believe??). But reading that suggests that he is pressing his case to influential Carlton people and they are in turn pushing it on for him.

Haven’t seen the footage, but reading it to me seems like he was trying to send a message to the Carlton board of I’m here and I want the job, he was quite complimentary to MLG as well

Ross is certainly getting a big push from certain sections of CFC. From the Silvagni clan certainly. From David Rhys-Jones certainly. He is head of the past players. Probably from Wallsy who has long been Ross' biggest supporter.

But they are not the one's who actually have to employ him. Which is a lot harder to do.

I bet the Club are praying to every god imaginable that Clarko says yes. Because the next decision if he says no is a very very very tough one on multiple levels.

Right or not would you like him to publicly sh*t on our club like that?

On national TV he was reported to have stated it was important to "aim not to injure David Teague" but nec minit "I want his job".

Sounds a bit like an et tu Brutus moment to me. Pretty sure this would just about mirror his hatchet job on Mark Harvey as well.

Said it before and don't care what people think. I do not want Lyon anywhere near this club.

Really it wouldn't worry me if he did, I mean if it's the truth it's the truth and if it's not then it's his opinion. Most of the media have s***canned us this year so none of those opinions really matter. The thing I got from that part of the interview last night was where he said it would have been different if Eddie was still president. Those two appear to be "selling each other" - Eddie stating last week "Ross if you haven't had a call yet from Carlton you'll be getting one soon" Eddie appears to be trying to help Lyon land the gig & Lyon's comments about Collingwood were more a dig at their board/set up as a bit of "F you" on behalf of Ed/Ed's preferred board challenger. That's my take anyway mate.

It's interesting that some are concerned about whether Clarkson will still have the 'fire in the belly' or the drive to give it his all ... yet Lyon had doubts about whether he wanted to coach again, ever, until his chat with Matthews a few days ago.
Saying Clarko got lucky is like saying Leon Cameron has been unlucky.

THIS

Lyon would have won multiple flags with the Giants list

As much as I wished the Teague experiment worked, I’ve seen enough to know that there will be no improvement even if we reshuffled the decks with the assistants. People suggesting that Ross isn’t a right fit have rocks in their heads

You can't be so definitive about anything to do with our coaching, especially to the point of suggesting some sort of intellectual impairment for people who don't agree with you.

How many times have you thought a player, coach or staff member might be good for us but they haven't been? Or thought they would be a bust but they came good?

Just need to be a little more circumspect with the language.

Adam Kingsley 🏎 (Matt’s brother)

So who then is the coaching candidate that went for the Collingwood job and thought they were shambolic. This same candidate is allegedly coming on the Lyon ticket as an assistant if Lyon gets the gig.

Surely its someone other than Harvey, who would have had inside knowledge to the chaos that the Pies are currently in.
