He was under-developed way before Teague took over. For a pick 5 to slump to the depths he has over the course of his career, when he's highly talented but not been able to demonstrate it sits with our development in my eyes.

No he wasn’t

Bolton loved this kid and played him every chance he got

Has gone backward under Teague….

2018 - 2 picks in the top 50.
2019- 3 picks in the top 50
2020 - 2 picks in the top 50

I don't classify that as having taken a lot of picks in the top 50.

Where have you pulled top 50 from?

2020 - 0 first round picks
2019 - 2 first round picks
2018 - 2 first round picks
2017 - 2 first round picks
2016 - 1 first round pick
2015 - 4 first round picks

There's an argument for us having been 'pick poor' in the last draft, but otherwise that's pretty clearly not the case for a number of years prior. In fact we've been anything but.

Oh please, LOB is not even close to being in the same boat.
When finally given an opportunity this season he showed what he can do as an outside player by smashing out some great performances.

He got far more opportunity the prior season and did little with it.

That's why they weren't gifting him games this season, because he wasn't exactly lighting it up in the VFL.

I remember SPS getting 3 Brownlow votes in his 7th game of AFL, round 7 2017 against Collingwood. Watching that game it seemed fairly obvious that we had a special player on our hands.

Not sure where the blame lies but this is a very disappointing outcome.
Yup - he has an incredibly high ceiling. Hope he still reaches it, but it looks like it won't be with us.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that he's on 750 thousand a season for the next two seasons.

We approach Fremantle, and offer them pick 24 + McGovern, but with the addendum that we're willing to pay 60% of his contract (450 thousand for the next two years). That drops his wage from them to about 100 thousand below the median AFL player wage, and he provides for them something they haven't got; a contested marking target and an aerial threat below the age of 30 that isn't a ruckman.

We, on the other hand, reduce his wage burden from our books by 300 thousand a season, obtain the player we want and don't part with our first for him. If we draft cannily over the next few years - as in, draft at least 2 rookies instead of using the national draft - or we continue to develop Mirkov in one of those positions, then we are only out of pocket for the term of the contract by a small margin (the difference between the rookie wages + 60% of Gov's contract, compared to 1-2 ND players instead).

It depends on what he's on, and whether Freo would be willing to play ball. I do not see why they wouldn't at least speculate about it.

I agree. Let's Rhys Palmer him and get him out of here. I unfortunately have no faith he will come good.

Fair enough, got f’ed around under Teague, and not worth taking his chances under yet another coach.

You can look at it that way (which I agree with...), BUT, I would argue he did himself no favours with what I saw (or didn't see) countless countless times on the field. I think about how DT almost destroyed Kennedy's career, a player who was more harshly treated than SPS, but who appears to have come out the other end a much better player.
People may disagree but SPS has been a massive bust from SOS...and it will shit me no end if he WC or Freo can flick the switch, a switch that I believe players should be able to do themselves at this level if they truly truly believe what a priviledge it is to put on an AFL jumper
Oh well, with gritted teeth, I say, "good luck"

You’re overrating williams man. He doesn’t defend on ground level and he can’t run games out. He looks gassed when he plays at half back… he’s a sensational ball user but I can confidently say that samo is a better midfielder than williams.

No, I'm not. I dare say you're massively overrating SPS though, who I am a fan of.

Williams had a poor first year at Carlton but let's not rewrite history because of it. Was a very good footballer at the Giants, and there is no reason why he can't be at Carlton.

SPS hardly delivered the goods on a weekly basis under Bolton either tbh.

Some revisionist history going on here.

Ultimately the relationship didn't work out between the player and club. It sucks, but it isn't the first time and won't be the last time for us or any other club either.

He is a fine young man and I do hope things work out well for him at The Eagles,

Unfortunately for us, he was very unlikely to reach his potential at our club.

SPS wasn't very old under Bolton either

Many of you have clearly been watching a different SPS to the one I have seen the last few years.

No player has had more opportunities and delivered so little in that time. How many great games has he played. One? Two? There was that one game against the Dogs at Marvel under Teague. Maybe Collingwood early?
He just seemed to be confused about what his role was. Never gave the impression he knew exactly what he should be doing.

Re SPS unfortunately i couldn't see him breaking into the midfield. especially if Cerra and Hewett come on board
Add Walshy, Crippa, Dow, stocker, Cunningham, fisher, setters, Fogarty. Also other youngsters in Carrol, Philp.. even Martin and Sos can play midfield/wing.

Someone has to miss out unfortunately. I think we might see more guys leaving for more opportunities.

Finally got some depth there now just need a good coaching group to help these guys reach their true potential.

Reckon one of the Eagles picks 29 or 36 or whatever they work out to be after bidding is spot on SPS’ value. Get it done and wish him the best for the future. We wasted him but it will be interesting to see how he goes at the Eagles in a professionally run club.
