Really good post.Firstly on this, at the time I retired I had yet to actually start in the position. My expectation was that I would have a fairly intense schedule, Big 4s tend to have a reputation of being quite brutal with hours. Once I started, whether through luck of ending up in a good team or an unwillingness to work extra hours that I wouldn't be paid for, I found that it wasn't as bad as I'd expected. Also, at the time I was studying as well so between work and study I wouldn't have made much of a contribution. The studying part is now over and done with. So that's accounts for the change.
Also, I would never stay on any team as a casually listed player, I think if I'm only 50% into anything I'm wasting my time, and I may as well put that time somewhere else where I can get more productivity or enjoyment.
Secondly, you probably have the impression that 'admin focusing on strategic matters' means I'm going to sit around and do nothing while PMing other people to do stuff. In terms of what I'm proposing, these are big ideas relating to complex issues which will probably have timelines spanning multiple seasons from start to finish.
- Firstly, recoding the sim from finalising the features and functionality to satisfy the committee, to the process of testing and implementing, that's probably going to require at least 2 seasons of regular feedback and consultation if that were to be successful.
- Potentially going into S34 with 13 teams, navigating the effects on the league structure and preparing a roadmap to 14 teams. That's going to require some substantial planning from a strategic point of view.
- Putting together a reserves competition, the designing and organisation that will need to go to that to make it appealing and useful to the league, that's not going to be a rush job that can be done in one offseason.
My point is, in order for the league to continue its evolution and elevate itself in terms of growth, engagement and entertainment value. To do that we need new ideas, more innovation and the admin should be a person who focuses on that versus someone who is just there to take notes on what the committee says and do weekly chores.
I'm going to anticipate your next question to be, why do you want this? My motives etc.
This might hurt my chances of winning but I don't really care whether I actually become admin or not. I don't need to, whoever it is out of Barrybran, PMBangers or kdavva I am confident that they will do a good job in the role.
What I want to see happen is conventional beliefs challenged, I think the admin role needs to evolve beyond keeping the 'trains running on time' and more emphasis on proactive, long-term thinking, innovative projects and new ideas that keep the league fresh.
The most valuable part of this process is not choosing the admin, it's presenting new ideas and getting a gauge on which ones are most appealing and what direction the players want the league to go.
If the direction that I present ends up influencing the eventual admin to adopt some of my proposals or be more adventurous in decision-making than they otherwise would have been I'd count that as a win.
MWPP, Ned_Flanders and others, I'll get to your questions a bit later.
