Did he drop Cale Hooker prior to leaving him out of the side for good after the GWS game? I don't think it was an overly hard decision to drop Cale based on form and the future after round 19, even with Harry Jones missing. Not really in the same realm as dropping Liam Shiels after 1 game.
I would agree that dropping your second leading goal kicker for the year and cultural leader of your team 4 weeks out from the finals due to poor form, is completely different to the Hawks dropping their 4th best midfielder in Liam Shiels after 1 game.

It is infinitely harder, I would argue.

Your question was whether Truck would have the stomach to make a decision akin to dropping Shiels - or essentially whether he would make a hard call on a senior player due to performance.

The reality is he did that for guys like Hooker and Zaharakis already, so I would say he absolutely has the stones to do it.

I think his question was would Truck have dropped Shiels after one iffy performance.

And it took Hooker undperforming for 6 games before being dropped so I dunno if he would based on that.

Zaharakis comparison seems more apt.

Was just about to say, Zaharakis is another example of a player not getting a free ride on the basis of seniority.

Smith is the one that is most under the pump but he must be doing enough of what we want him to do to keep him in the side.
He got a free ride for long enough. Literally got to the point where he was running on quicksand before he was out of the team.

Also didn't give TBC the farewell game.

Lore the only thing you missed from Ruttens interview was, ummm, ummmm ummmm.

God won't someone teach these people to speak properly.

They played the clip of Hardwick talking about the medi-sub during AFL360 on Monday and … I mean they’re paid to make opinions aren’t they. But yeah.

tbh the medical sub should have been simply a concussion sub only given that the whole point was the ensure players who were concussed were taken out of the game. Whoever is subbed out, mandatory 12 days out as per concussion protocol, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Making it a wishy-washy medical sub for a player who maybe or maybe won't play next week was always stupid, and was always going to lead the exactly the discussion that Hardwick is trying to create.

Also, Lloyd thinking the sub thing was 'new' was quite funny.

I posted the below a year ago, same thing stands today;

The rule should have only been for concussions, to make clubs play it much more safely with head injuries.

As is, it's ripe for being manipulated.

Must say this is the first time i get a bit of a "we don't know what we're doing" vibe from Rutten. I know we have injuries but playing blokes for one week then dropping them (Baldwin, Francis etc) surely isn't the sign of good planning or development. Surely if you're building for the future you pick who is preferred and give them a decent shot?

I suspect it's a mixture of availability, form, and trying new things.

Melbourne play two genuine rucks and Wright is our only KPF showing any kind of form, so bringing in a second ruck keeps him down there. Francis was OK I thought, but his conversion isn't great, and Nic Martin is only marginally shorter so should still offer a mobile marking target when he drifts forward. Tex for Smith is a fairly like-for-like swap with a player who's body is letting them down, and Shiel for Merrett is pretty like-for-like too.

I still think Francis is being misused, and should be playing Ridley's role, whilst Ridley plays Heppell's role, and old-man Heppell plays VFL.

Or giving them a chance and if they don't take it selecting someone else, rather than Woosha's pecking order selection policy?
