Autopsy Round 22 = Sydney 77-50 Collingwood

Even if the worst case eventuates and we lost the next two and go out in the EF, I reckon it’s been a great year.

Was pleased to see Collingwood continue to take the game on and take risks. Not once did they drop their intensity. Sydney we’re just too good too strong and more adept on the toy ground.

I feel our forward line is our biggest problem.

Some will, some hopefully not. A clearance mid is fixed by a fit DeGoey or Adams, bombing it long into congestion deeper pockets away from the SCG and better decision making, turnovers/dropped marks in defence better communication. We also know Maynard is more valuable to us in defence. Didn’t hurt us today, but no full back is a risk especially against the cats and tuggers and our rucks are good honest battlers who will have their good and bad days.
Did you fly up Barrackers?

They're one team I'd like to see live to work out what they're doing. On TV, they just seemed to consistently have blokes rolling up as an option from behind the ball, yet never seemed to lose shape behind or ahead of the ball. It felt like they had extra players. Must be bloody well drilled.

Well we were beaten by the better team today and our pressure was off a bit. Didn’t seem to cope with their short kicking game either.
Hopefully a good week on the track ready for the Blues.
Perhaps the streak ending will free the team up mentally.
Go Pies

Just couldn't get anything going today. Sydney's pressure and defence is absolutely elite, and was sustained from start to finish.

In weeks gone by, when we've put the foot down we've been able to break teams. We couldn't do that today. Credit to the Swannies, they were my pre-season favourites for the flag, and they completely outplayed us.

On to next week. Hopefully we can ruin Carlton's year, and set up an epic first final against the Cats

Any loss is disappointing, but thought the lads cracked in all day just came up against a very well structured defence on there own turf. They'll learn valuable lessons from it I'm sure!
Also I've attended most Pies games played in Melbourne going on 20 years and the thought of Carton V Collingwood, final round with potentially Carlton playing to make the 8 and keep us out of 4 while Pies playing to make the 4 and knocking Carlton out of the 8.
It's genuinely a once in a generation game.
If your not excited for that match your doing footy wrong!

Sydney was excellent, credit to them. We were really flat. Not sure if it was from the flu that went through the place or if the close games caught up with us, but we were running in wet cement all day.

Carlton with finals on the line will be tough, so we’ll need to get our energy back. Fingers crossed De Goey and Ginnivan are available.

We didn't look for the switch all game, I'm sure they will work on that in post game reviews.
Melbourne employed similar zone tactics but didn't capitalise as well. We adjusted and started switching. Vs Swan's the switch play just didn't happen.

Swans very powerfully built team all have the explosive quality and stand up strong in tackles/over the ball. Warner (one of many good youths for them) is a gun they just keep getting these NSW kids and churning out quality players.
They have a classically built spine with enviable KPP prospects.
Cats vs Swans GF a good chance and I think they will roll them if it happens.

We just don't have the depth to lose Grundy, Degoey, Adams, Ginnivan and lesser extent Reef who imo all make us a better team.

Build up of close games week after week is taxing add to that, Flights, flu and we looked off from word go.

Hopefully get up for Carlton and then reset with 2 weeks to recover for finals and have a red hot go.

Credit to Sydney but wow every thing that could go wrong, did go wrong.

Our communication and decision making was really poor. Tackling was really really poor. Would have to a world record for broken tackles.

Those are three aspects of the game in our control. Too often we failed to create an extra stoppage in our forward line and bang they would zip the ball down and kick a goal.

They mauled us and not one player flew the flag. This game really showed that we need another inside mid.

Surprised we never put Jamie in the centre at any stage in the game. Ginners on McCartin I didn’t like - would much prefer McCreery. Not fussed re Ginners hammy - not a big loss imo.

But hopefully we learn a lot from this game.

And hopefully one day Sam Reid will ******* retire. Lol
Clearly Elliott was affected by the flu if he wasn't used as a mid at any stage. That makes me hopeful that we were hampered by illness.

For all their supposed gun players, strong bodies and explosiveness they hardly set the world on fire. 11 goals against a defense which made numerous mistakes isn't too convincing.

Definitely agree that Sydney were better. The point I'm trying to make is we only really lifted our pressure and risk taking again in the last quarter and this time it finally failed. I think it's a good lesson for us.

Spot on, we looked flat from the start, but also think we got worried out of a few contests players weren't body ling the Swans in tackles were zoning off and reaching.
We lifted our intent and effort in 1nd half and it bought the game back into our terms just poor fwd entries and elite Swans defensive set up.

Craig needs to play Henry
We are one tall player short and it showed today inside 50 especially against defences who are good in the air
He’s not a tall, neither is Johnson or Mihocek. Or at least they don’t play that way. Johnson will make a good ‘third’ tall option, he just doesn’t stick enough contested marks. He needs the ball out in front or on top of someone’s head.

We had our chances, Sydney are a seriously good side peaking at the right time of year.

Unfortunately as I said a couple of weeks ago, we should have taken the opportunity to rest fatigued players. Gini is a big loss for the first final.

I feel our forward line is our biggest problem.

It isn't great but the midfield is numero uno problemo, You can have a forward line with Gary Ablett Snr, Wayne Carey, Tony Lockett, Peter Daicos & Kevin Bartlett but it will do you no good if - a.) You can't get the pill in there and b.) It goes in there without purpose.

Get Adams and JDG back in that midfield and the forwards will get better and more frequent looks. Today our i50 efficiency was 30%. Just didn't get the ball in quick enough often enough.

Disappointing game but I had a feeling we’d drop this one especially with JDG out. We looked gassed for most of the game, barely any intensity or pressure. Thinking it’s to do with the flu outbreak or all the close hard games of recent starting to take a toll on us…..hoping the boys respond next week and have a better game. Will be worrying if we drop that one as well especially heading into finals, don’t wanna get knocked out first round.

Hopefully just the loss we had to have. Take our lessons from the game, do better and come out firing next week onwards

Glad you mentioned Brown, has some good plays and finished with more disposals with less game time than Elliott and Mihocek combined.

For mine we need to keep a fit Grundy. Cameron lacks second effort.
Yeah, I’m happy enough with Cameron and Cox - they can be competitive. But Grundy is on other level.

Brown might just save his career in the next few games!

Mihocek looks sore to me.

Nah, unfortunately I had to make do with the choppy and often overly zoomed in tv coverage, which made it bloody difficult to see how the swans were structuring and also our response. They almost seem to sacrifice midfield numbers, possibly the wings? for the benefit of their defence and forward play. On a shallower ground it would make sense and perhaps also explains why we played so heavily along the wings today. Albeit we also played more along the wing in the first half against the dees.

I don't think we could play much worse than that and weren't too far away.

We're going to need to pull the finger out, because Carlton are going to throw absolutely everything at us next week
