Completely understand everyone's basic reasoning, but still feel the current conversations around many players - both negative and positive - remains a bit delusional.

I called the issues with our list, with our 22, with our gameplan from very early in the season, and it never abated. We need a lot of work at every level of the football department to become a genuine contender.

Teams of the calibre we hope to beat can currently pick us apart even when we're putting in season high levels of pressure on them. Imagine thinking we'd win finals in the same scenarios, when they won't sit around and wait for us to make mistakes as much because they don't have to pace their way through the season.
All your postings sound like we are ordinary football team who teams can work out and beat and have so many deficiencies

We lost to the reigning premier who finished second on the ladder by 5 points in the last 30 seconds of the game. We were missing Hewett , Kennedy and Williams from our best 22.
We then lose to Collingwood who finished 4th by 1 point and we were missing Walsh, Hewett, Kennedy and had an underdone Williams.
The reality is we are going to be a better side going forward when we finally have some luck with injuries like the teams do that win finals not by massive changes to the playing personal and big changes to the game plan.

Cripps really had a special year that I wanna acknowledge. I know we all know this but he’s arguably had his best year.

Very similar to 2019 started off like a house on fire and a down patch in the middle of the year then came home strong.

Just did a predictor and I reckon he comes 3rd in the Brownlow on 27 votes. Annoyingly had neale winning, I reckon that bloke is so easily tagged I don’t get why teams don’t do it every week.

I’ll bet my left one Newman won’t be going anywhere….
Also NO to Wilson..
I think we missed Newman more than what some think those last 2 games. He was a constant in the back 6 when everyone was falling over injured and I think he would have provided the organisation, system and leadership in the last couple of games when it was needed.

I wont bet my left nut though... it's the only one I have... but kudos to your dedication to the cause! 😆

Stocker needs to lose about 4kgs of puppy fat. He'd move far far better and his agility isn't fantastic as it is. Would do him a lot of good if Voss is keen to keep him around. Petracca used to be the same, built like an ox but he's a hell of a lot more nimble now and has more to his game than just out muscling players.

What!!
From where? Blokes ripped as F…

Blake Acres 115 games in 9 seasons. This feels like the same mistake again

Big difference between ripped and AFL ripped. Petracca looked a beast even in his draft year but he trimmed down considerably over an off season and the next year he dominated. Kennedy for us was built like an ox but had his best year after losing the excess weight needed for his position. Defenders and second tier mids need to be able to run and be agile. Cripps can get away with being enormous because he's the main inside mid for us and pushes forward afterwards.

Stocker still has plenty of weight he could trim off, look at the definition of his muscles compared to the real workhorses in the league and our team and its plain to see.

Fogarty is not quick and has failed to cement a spot at two clubs, l don't see any mismanagement with him.

A good reserves players who lacks in a number of areas at the top level.
Yep, loved Fogarty at the draft. His underage games were exceptional. Wasn’t the star, but sort of the fabric that bound. Work rate, tackling, connection work in close, did the hard yards for his team. Pretty much didn’t grow post under 18’s. All the traits are there, star at the lower level, but the old “can’t kick over a jam jar” was written for Fog, limiting his forward creds. Pretty much midfield or bust for Fog and he doesn’t have the physical attributes to mix it at the top level consistently.
Fogarty has great acceleration, though his top speed is maybe a shade below what you'd expect of someone of his stature. He's got a history of leg/foot/ankle issues that have hampered that.

I still like him around the contest in the right system, but he has to bulk up without collapsing the problem lower leg area again.

None of them add enough speed outside or inside the contest. Almost none of them fix that we struggle to add width when the pressure is on and defensive transition is required.

And look, for the most part, my 22 agrees with your assessment of our best: we don't need to change much there. It's the tactical layers to that, and the personnel in the next reserve tier so that we can adapt when challenges inevitably arise.

118, with another 23 games at state level, which brings it to 141 games at about 16 a season. 18 games each the last 2 seasons.

We're trading Fisher now who has just recently extended his contract until the end of 2025

You are aware of the hypothetical nature of BF yes?

Extension aside, Fisher is one of very few on the list who has some trade value, without necessarily filling a key role.

It's a given he will come up in discussion occasionally...even knowing he recently signed an extension.

Soooo who's paying for Setters protein shakes over the summer???
Get him as far away from the wing as possible and back to being the inside extractor we were all excited about in 2020

I noticed his spaghetti arms as well

Definitely slimed down for the wing role

Sorry, missed this yesterday: this is total bullshit... both selections were surrounded with midfield picks. We may have reached for those particular players - to which I agree - but it wasn't a reach to pick a midfielder.

In fact in both drafts, it would have been an insane reach to pick a tall, or ruck, or even medium defenders or forwards.
You are right about there being other mids we could have taken in both drafts, but that would be pointless to speculate on because we can all say "what if" Thats really not my point. My point is more that if you are hell bent on solving a problem no matter what, that often that constricts your thinking about who are the best players. Becoming obsessed with a particular "type" does this.
I used 2 examples in our past to illustrate this. It seems to me that it was repeated with dow and sps.

Compare and contrast SOS's first draft with us- where he had complete freedom to pick the very best players, simply because we had holes to fill everywhere. IMO he completely owned that draft.
Then the following year , having gone all in on KPP, the commentary became louder that we needed more mids because malthouses observation from a few years before was becoming even more obvious. This became even more urgent given we had not addressed it the year before.

Nick Austin has the benefit now, where we have plenty of good players. He can afford to go to the draft and pick the best available

I mean he correctly picked the following two draft pools, mids would have been the play. Remember that clubs have a view on the upcoming talent all the way down to about U13s. They'll be able to predict most of the top 20-30 prospects from the next 3-4 drafts.

In terms of what was said at the time, the consensus was we should have been looking at Scrimshaw in 2016, or traded down for Simpkin, and in 2017 the play was Cerra or LDU, with most leaning towards Cerra, followed by Richards at 10, with Darcy Fogarty, Bonar, Zac Bailey and Higgins being in that conversation.
