Traded Jason Horne-Francis [to Port Adelaide in multi-club trade]

Are GWS looking to use picks 3, 12, 15, 18 and 19 purely for the draft? Or do they want to get some players in via trade?

Maybe we could upgrade pick 33 or 43 for one those later picks and offer up Byrne-Jones or Bonner?

We genuinely need to trade away a player for 2nd round. Can't see it happening another way.

Hayes, Drew, Bonner, DBJ, Farrell. DBJ with most value in that lot perhaps as an All-Australian and club BnF although he was off it best this year. I know he just resigned but yeah either him or Drew

In all seriousness North have actually done fine out of this deal. So have West Coast. GWS showed up, bent over and handed over the lube to make it work for everyone else, and I salute them for it.
Yeah I think north have done well. What more can you hope for to get for a player that wants out than a similar pick + a future 1st on top. That’s a good deal.

Also west coast, despite people knocking them to get out of pick 2 and the private school vic boys and into hewett territory , whose not far behind, if at all those vic boys plus get another pick. That’s good for them.

Ports given up a lot, but the fact we get future 2nds and 3rds back helps a lot,

In the end rozee butters jhf Bergman sinn to look forward too in our midfield.

I really rate that group of players as a future midfield. High end young talent there.

The problem they have is the crows basically offered north two top 5 picks and pick 14 for JHF just 12 months ago.

And they rejected it.

So this, regardless of the actual value, set the price in Norths mind on exactly what JHF (2021 1st pick) is worth to them..

And so to let him go a year later as a still under contract player they are expecting, as near as possible to, the same deal they were offered 12 months ago..

Now we can all agree or disagree on this “value” that north has assigned JHF as much as we like.. but it looks like they are gonna stick to it.

Port need to find more. Trading a valuable player, either to north or someone else, seems the only way they can find that required “more”…
On paper this is true but really it is not the full story though because Crows also wanted North's F2 back. Given one of the picks Crows were offering was Melbourne's, who were the premiers who you would've expected to finish top 4, you could reasonably expect that to have been maybe a 3 or 4 pick upgrade.

So Pick 4, Crows F1 (probably predicted around 6 or so) and a 4 pick upgrade for Pick 1. Sort of kind of 3 first rounders but not exactly.

The other factor is that, obviously at that point in time it wasn't known that that eventual pick 1 would not want to be there - I reckon that would've changed the game. Which it has now.

This ain’t getting done if port still can’t fathom losing something they don’t want to lose (to any club)

Maybe next time they go after a contracted player they might actually understand you have to make the other club want to accept your deal by offering overs

North can’t have been clearer. It needs to involve a pick in the top 5 and/or a quality player.

Your option provides neither of those.

Not sure why this needs to be constantly repeated.
There’s no such thing in this instance as having a clear trade position. Just because Rawlings is saying that means sweet **** all. There’s a lot of risk involved for North for not doing the deal this year.

There's zero risk for North, they simply keep a contracted player. Who knows, he may end up deciding to re-sign.

All the risk is with Port for fully committing to a player and failing to get the trade done, especially for any players considering requesting a trade to Port in the future. If you court a player all season and can't get a trade done because you want to be stingy instead, then a lot of players will think twice before requesting a trade to your club.

Plus, next year brings Adelaide into the picture, who will likely finish lower than Port, so it's not like Port can threaten PSD either.

Oh haven’t seen this one before. Port poster claims North don’t have the leverage & must act now.

Brilliant.

It would be a bad look if JHF decides to stay at North or go to Adelaide next year and becomes an AA, while Port could have had him but refused to add one of their fringe young guys.

What exactly is the "lots of risk involved"...he's contracted.

Recap now that the AFL have blocked Port getting at both their F1 and F2.

Port have 8, 33, 43, and F1 which together is roughly equivalent in value to pick 2. To get JHF and Rioli they need to trade out players for an extra late first and an early second in value.

Matching this to players, I'd say trading out Bergman or Sinn would give them enough to get JHF. Or trade out Georgiades to get both JHF and Rioli. Alternatively, they could forget about Jason and get Rioli and Esava and keep all their players.

Decisions, decisions.

The basics of trading for a contracted player are that you need to give the other club a decent chance to come away with a win.

JHF is a cornerstone of North's rebuild. Port got in his ear and wooed him while he was still under contract. Port need to let North feel like they have a chance to replace him.

Thats not 3 average picks/players. Its not a "draft points win". It either needs to be a Butters/Rozee/Wines (which isn't happening) or a top 3 pick in this draft.

North need to feel like they have a chance at a new cornerstone this year. Otherwise we reconvene next year.

They didn’t go after a contacted player, JHF nominated Port? Overs at North is every year because you constantly **** it up. Everyone’s bored of North.

I am still yet to see any scenario that has been listed where the eagles deal pick 2 and Rioli and come out massively infront

I have seen a lot of scenarios where we lose, badly

A few where we break even, barely

One or two where we are in front, fractionally

But nothing world beating

And that's entirely the point. Unless Port are willing to come to the table with something truly significant, see you later and we will take pick 2 to the draft

There is the old adage "you give nothing, you get nothing". Port would do well to remember that

Literally your club president is on record as saying the club had been pursuing JHF for a while.

And they all said both Crows and Port were only made aware of this on the last two weeks.

You don’t think North haven’t enquired about our VIC players? Like all the time? If they aren’t then they aren’t doing their job.

Kochie just said what everyone doesn’t say that’s all. And yes he’s still a dickhead.

Call me crazy or naive, but I am Port, I would be accept (albeit reluctantly) to package Bergman as part of a JH-F trade.

I have not seen anything from him yet to suggest he should be regarded as an untouchable asset, granted still very young and recent first round draft pick.

Definitely neutral when it comes to this and other non Carlton trades, but if/when push comes to shove, Port may have to give him up.

Yeah... so, you could say that we were pursuing them.
You were the one saying that Port didn't pursue him.

No it's all the other clubs fault for not wanting to get rid of their players on the cheap. All the neutral, WC and North supporters are dumb!!!!
Why do North supporters keep pretending that all the neutral supporters are on their side? Plenty of neutrals in here saying you should take the picks and move on too.

Honestly, how on earth could anyone at Port look at their draft hand, hope to keep all of their players, commit to Rioli and JHF then go
“yep, reckon we’ve got enough here to squeeze Ratagolea onboard”

Comedy gold!
Is this supposed to worry us? If it takes trading a decent player out to get JHF then I'm sure it will be considered. But nobody's trading out a Miles Bergman level player so we can get fat pothead Rioli or 24 year old depth player Ratugolea.

Yep, and given he's originally from Victoria, he could negotiate his move home with any one of ten clubs, which would pay us the draft currency.
Its astonishing that we're at day 6 and this hasn't been floated by Port as an option.

So President David Koch was bullshitting because that's not how he described it

I think Bergman is also OOC 2023 unlike Sinn who looks to have already signed to 2025.

Georgiades also looks to be OOC 2023.
