Prediction Round 5, 2024: Changes vs Richmond

I reckon its critical we minimise changes this week and only go with forced.

If it's both of Edwards and Maric, so be it but would hate to see any omissions after last weeks game.

INS: Brockman is the obvious first cab for either player. If it's both, I would be hoping we look at someone to fill the Edwards hole that is not Gaff. Johnston has been doing enough as an outside ball player in the two WAFL games. He's my pick. Give Chesser a run off HB, Johnston on the wing, swap them both throughout the game.

Sub: Rotham

What I am looking for:

Last week was a bit of a free hit game after last years Sydney result. Any improvement on the scoreboard would be treated as a significant showing and going from -171 to -26 brought a mixture of relief and optimism.

This is the pressure test as it's a "reproduce" against a weaker opposition game.

Midfield dominance: We are holding our own and did so again. The Tigers still have a solid core group in Martin, Taranto & Graham but on paper Yeo, Kelly, Ginbey should have the better. This is a big week for the three main mid dogs. Nankervis & Williams will be one to watch too. They did not meet last year as Soldo took the points. Our second tier groups are very much developing types. Harley the standout from either side. On ball we are a massive chance.

Handball: Small improvement last week but still more work to go, another 5% lift will see our outside players get a few extra moments to look forward, compose and hit targets as opposed to losing that time ensuring they control the handball receive.

Defence: A few boys enjoying a couple of weeks continuity together. Keep it going and let them build.

We really should be in this game (which is extraordinary given the last 12 months results). I am a firm believer if we can continue to build without big injury numbers we will see options and pressure for spots appearing soon. Healthy competition. A great sign for the year as it progresses.

I’d be thinking Rawlinson has to be considered when looking at changes. I assume he hasn’t got an AFL tank yet so must be the sub again.

It’s unlikely he’ll be picked to start - with the intention of being subbed later - because if someone else goes down and needs subbing, then Rawlinson struggles through a whole game.

So if another young player comes (like Hall as some suggest) then it’d be as sub - meaning Rawlinson is out.

If we bring Brockman in id say we would send Rawlinson back to the WAFL.

I wouldn't risk Ledwards after a small hammie as these are 2 weeks at a minimum.

Maric i would suggest its pain management so maybe give him a weeks rest.

Out: Rawlinson, Maric, Ledwards
In: Brockman, Gaff, Johnston

One of Gaff or Johnston to be the sub.

Still don’t think either Maric or Edwards will get up. Shouldn’t be taking any risks with them anyway.

Match committee don’t seem to have settled on the final backline spot, they’ve basically rotated Witherden, Jones and now Rotham through there. I don’t think we need the extra height of Rotham this week but may as well give him another game I guess.

Out: Edwards, Maric (both injured)
In: Brockman, Gaff
Sub: Rawlinson again
Emergencies: Trew (held over), Jones, Barnett

WAFL: Jones, Barnett, Witherden, Hall, Johnston, Sheed, Culley, Ryan, Dewar, Baker, Livingstone, Hedwards if he’s not suspended.

Gaff for Edwards straight swap, I’d have given the spot to Trew but I think they’ll decide Gaff has done his time. As a result Trew gets the week off as the standby.

Brockman for Maric straight swap, makes us a bit smaller in the forward line.

Rawlinson another run as sub, played 51% game time last week so should be right to do about as much again if need be.

Might be failing my sponsorship duties here, but Gaff coming back in full time this week would be madness.

Richmond as a side rely almost completely on their quick ball movement. This week of all weeks - we can not afford statues defensively in the midfield. It has to be a real focus, especially with this game being quite winnable.

In order for that to happen, we have to demonstrate a marked improvement in our team structures when Richmond have the ball. We have to be wary of their transitional play.

I'm not opposed to Gaff coming in as sub to give Rawlinson a full game in the WAFL, but he shouldn't be starting.

I know, that’s more of a “what I think will happen” than what I’d do. I’d reward Trew.

Give Hall a run. Let our youngsters show if they are capable. I believe he is

So both L Edwards and Maric are a Test for this weekend.

My son and I checked out the SCGIO Injury uodate and when both were tests we looked at each other.......stunned......like WTF?

We were waiting for 10 weeks for Maric.......amputation for Edwards.

Someone needs to lock down on D.Rioli off half back, as he starts many of the Tigers attacking plays. Would like to see Petch step up and take it on.
If Rotham stays, I’d love to see him go to him. Maybe with his height he can also exploite Rioli in the air

i wouldnt mind Gaff in the side for his fitness - I notice we are really dropping off in games, which is not surprising with so many 1st and 2nd year players.

Who stood Blakey last week?

He still found a fair bit of the ball (25 disposals) but wasn’t as prominent/damaging as other games this year

Part of that was our ability to deny Sydney their kicks into the corridor until the last quarter moreso than shutting Blakey down but I just don’t recall him having those run and carry, 1-2 disposal chains
