I like McDonald. I think he offers something different to Amartey & McLean (who each offer something different to McDonald as well.) More of a smooth-moving aerobic type, rather than a brute.
The three of them are perfect for the game we are playing at the minute.
If we like what Heeney, Warner & Gulden are doing (and I assume we all do?) then the way to maintain that is to not have a big power forward who will command the ball in the front half away from them.
Our forwards don't do this but rather work well to complement each other and the mids to give them ample opportunity, time and space to do their thing in.
As I commented earlier today, I think there's a chance this 'decoy' structure gets found out, and maybe then we're tested to see if we can rely on a forward to have a big game. But it's a pretty fool-proof structure that makes the chances of this happening very unlikely, and all three forwards have shown they can have big games on the odd occasion anyway.
It's great that Hamling's going well in the VFL and even better that we can leave him there and let him get better and better so that if the unfortunate happens and he's required, he'll be in the very best form possible.
