The good news right now is that league leaders are nowhere near the status that we were during our time . Went to hawks game yesterday ,,, they’re looking a million dollars .
Bookends are chol/dear and frost/sicily yet they prob look sec best team in it . Have done a superb job rebuilding with 20 something pics and tactical imports
We need to commit to bringing in 5-6 R1s and more next year . Honestly we will climb quickly, we have plenty of experience remaining to surround these kids and drip feed them and I like what we already have
Exciting times
Couldn’t agree more. Hawks were brilliant yesterday… pace and class in the mids and some great small forwards. That should be our blueprint.

If we can get 7 and 8 from gcs and Freo, we should go FOS @1 as could see jagga still on the board at 7.

1- Ashcroft (matched) / Brisbane
2- O'Sullivan / tigs
3- Trainor / norf
4- Allen / wce
5- Draper / Adelaide
6- Smillie / Saints
7- Reid / Dees
8- Jagga / tigs
9- Armstrong / tigs
10- Lombard (matched) / gcs

Don't see jagga as a need for norf, adelaide or dees but would worry about wce and saints.

Could also try and trade with the eagles for pick 3 with something like 7 and 21 or include in a Baker deal to secure jagga
Pick 4 is very early for Bo Allen. Eagles will likely have the Hawks' first for Barrass, which is probably still too early, but a bit more appropriate.

If we end up with the predicted pick i just want to see Tigers bidding on
Ashcroft with #1
Lombard with #6
Kako with #13
Camporele with #22

Just wipe these campaigners out
We won't bid on Ashcroft if we get Brisbane's first-rounder. We won't bid on Lombard with the pick Gold Coast give us. We won't bid on Camporeale in case we get stuck with him.

Funny coz its true. Imagine another ball butcher. The 8 or 9 picks we end up with, even if we only use 6 or 7 and push a couple to next year, all need to be good kicks. The only one I'd make an exception for is Travaglia as I think his competitiveness/attitude would be huge for the team if we got him at the right pick.

Soon-to-be Brisbane Lion Levi Ashcroft has given fans an early taste of his exciting potential with a best on ground showing in the VFL on Sunday.

In what could be his only VFL cameo for the season given his Coates Talent League commitments, the future father-son selection put on a clinic in the Lions’ 50-point victory over GWS at Brighton Homes Arena.

Last week Ashcroft, the son of Lions great Marcus and brother to second-year star Will, confirmed his intent to join the club at November’s national draft where he is a prospective No. 1 pick.

And the 179cm midfielder did those claims no harm in his VFL debut on Sunday, amassing a game-high 35 disposals and 11 clearances in an eye-catching display.

Ashcroft even crept forward in the second quarter to slot a silky goal from the boundary line.

It was a statement showing from the young gun, who will now return to the Sandringham Dragons for the remainder of their Coates Talent League season.

A host of first-round draft talent was on display across the VFL at the weekend, with top pick prospects Jagga Smith and Finn O’Sullivan playing for Richmond.

Smith, who is firmly the favourite for the top pick, has played three VFL games for the Tigers, while O’Sullivan made his state league debut.

It was not as prolific a performance from Smith compared to his first two games when he had 27 and 32 touches, but he collected 22 disposals and seven clearances.

Only three Tigers gathered the ball more than Smith, who played off the half forward flank with stints in the midfield.

O’Sullivan was not as prolific with his disposal count, collecting just 11 touches, but he booted 2.1 in a midfield-forward role, showing his wares as a damaging prospect.

Meanwhile, Bendigo Pioneers product Jobe Shanahan did his draft stocks no harm with another strong performance for Essendon’s VFL side.

The Bombers defeated Gold Coast by two goals despite kicking a wayward 11.25 (91), with Shanahan slotting 2.3 from his 11 touches.

He took seven marks, playing primarily as a deep lead-up forward, with Peter Wright kicking 3.2 to lead the Bombers’ goal scorers.

It was a tall forward line with Wright, Vigo Visentini and Todd Goldstein all spending time inside the forward 50, but despite that Shanahan showed his wares.

Shanahan is expected to be picked up in the second round, with Essendon currently holding its own selection.

The Bombers showed last season its preference to trade up, moving up one selection to take Nate Caddy, and they could see Shanahan has a long-term key forward prospect to pair with the 10th pick in last year’s draft.

Gold Coast had its own draft hopeful in Leonardo Lombard featuring again in the loss.

Lombard is a Suns academy player and will be bid on, and likely matched, in the first round of the 2024 draft.

The joint Larke Medalist had 22 touches and three goals against Coburg last week, but he wasn’t able to have the same impact in the loss to the Bombers, collecting 13 touches.

I think his 1 possession that prevented him going at 100% efficiency was that soccer off the ground for goal that deflected off a Saints foot straight to another Saint lol
One thing that stood out watching the highlights video that I missed yesterday, was how comfortable and relaxed he is taking on or avoiding a tackler. His lateral movement and pace are clearly something he backs in to be able to avoid trouble.

Mate where do you rate Shanahan, this kid is doing himself no harm at VFL level. Surely doesnt make it to the 2nd round as per the above article?

Having watched the VFL game.

Few observations:

Finn is very classy in his movement/play.
Cotchin like. Could see him starting on the forward flank and building up to full-time mid in his 2nd/3rd season. Probably the most skilled player in the pool. Something exciting usually happened when he had the ball.

- Match fitness isn’t there yet due to the injuries. Body strength will improve during pre-season/career. Started in the midfield but seemed to get pushed off the ball easily and didn’t have the fitness to cover the whole ground.

Jagga is always in the right spots, reads and predicts where the ball is going to come out better than anyone. Provides an option to anyone that has the ball. Very agile. Body size isn’t really a factor for him, but will need to put on a fair bit to translate to be dominate in the AFL. Brings others into the game.

- pace and effectiveness with ball in hand.
Lacks that explosive speed to break away from a pack. At times sells his teammates into some pressure when disposing the ball. Will see ball, get ball and then make it up as he goes. Is a unique prospect and he could go on to be a similar player to a Neale or Merret type.

(I will say as well, Jagga seems like the type of person that expects very high standards of himself and others around him. I noticed this week and last, Jagga was frustrated with Cumberland/Sonsie after they turned it over or over ran the ball. It seemed as though Sonsie didn’t want to give the ball to Jagga when he was open, electing to just bomb it forward or create something himself.. usually a turn over)

That’s just a personal observation, but i feel with Jagga, he wants to win and be the best player.

Both Finn & Jagga compliment each others games. Would be good to snag both with Pick 1!!

- side note:
Cumberland and Sonsie. If they have contracts, they should be paid out. Both these guys are not up to the standards of an AFL footballer.
Cumberland plays like every game of footy is his first game. Footy IQ is that of an under 8’s kid.
Sonsie has poor skills, he might have a neat looking kicking style but he makes terrible decisions and does not offer the team anything.

That one in the centre of the ground when he's about to be tackled and a little flick of the feet and he's 10m clear on a completely different line to the defender. Think the defender is still trying to find him :D

That confidence is what makes good players great IMO

This stood out even more at one stage yesterday, he had the ball in congestion, tried to flick a handball out that got swatted away for another ball up. Really nothing he could do, did nothing wrong, but punched his hand, said a few words and was clearly pissed off that he couldnt thread the eye of a needle, a player driving high standards from day 1 is exactly what we need.

The most exciting prospect IMO is Armstrong. Would address so many needs. Next most exciting is Smillie, 194 cm mid who can run, long kick and can find the footy.
The way Smillie is going we may get him @20.lol

I said the same thing. Reminded me of cotch.

FOS is like a Rolls Royce. Just oozes class.

He is clear no.1 to me now. Fitness is easy to get. Class is innate.

Very Cotch like attitude.
