Gee nice signing at Hinterland with champion big man Jacob Simpson playing there next year!

That’s a massive get for hinterland. Simpson is probably the best ruckman I have seen in QLD local footy for a long time. No mucking around up at Nambour right now.

I dont see the benefit in clubs such as Sandgate having a largely dominant year in both grades (despite their ressies choking horribly in the GF) against bang average sides in Div 2. That is one club that should nut up and have a go in div 1 and see how they go. I think the standard between div 2 and div 1 is quite large though so they may be in for a rude awakening but at least they show some nuts!

Don’t think it as big as the gap between QAFL and Div 1.

You’d think Alex hills would be the first to ‘nut up’
There senior side has played the last 3 grand finals lost to hinterland in one then beat Kenmore and then lost to sandgate
While there reserves have won 3 of the last 4 premierships if my memory serves correctly

I’m sure all the coaches players and volunteers that toil away in those “Mickey mouse” leagues would share that sentiment

Thats a smart comment. Think Clubs will do what’s best for them. Sandgate and Alex have been the bench mark in Div 2 for a few years. No different to Springwood , Mayne and Coorparoo in Div 1. How many teams have won premierships in last 5 years in Div 1?

3 in the last 3 years. Widely held none of them are equipped to go up though. Sandgate definitely are. Redcliffe have everything just need to work on player stocks and look on their way with the masters recruits. Alex should have a crack also.

Its an interesting conundrum as to whether a club stays in the lower division and is happy with their lot and players already there obviously okay playing that level versus going up a division and does it attract more who want to play a higher level than you lose from going that way? If most stick fat with the club then the worse that can happen is previous senior players go to the 2's which is always handy as well.

But Alex Hills have played in 3 consecutive grand finals. Won 1, and their first lost was against an undefeated hinterland team that is now in div 1. And the second loss was against a super strong Sandgate and lost by less then 5. As well as their ressies winning 2 of the last 3.

So is the idea now to beat up on the lower clubs and try to win another before going up? Is player retention the aim by staying in div2?

I’d say their plan is working pretty well. 6 GFs in 3 years and 3 premierships with ressies and seniors.

Coorparoo made an even bigger jump to QAFL and in their 3 consecutive GFs. Only won 1. But still went up.

Just don’t see why Alex Hills more than anyone can’t go up? Or is it about doing a Noosa and Maroochydore and just beating up everyone till you’re bored for years and then decide to move up?

I am not involved with Alex Hills nor do I know much about their entire playing list.
As I see it, rather than just moving up for the sake of it, some questions they will probably be asking themselves are (in no particular order):
1. Does moving up to Div 1 enable more sponsors and/or provide more value to existing sponsors.
2. Do they have the resources to attract higher level players to ensure they are at least competitive in Div 1.
3. Who are the players that will fall out the bottom? Are they Alex Hills juniors and long term club supporters and if so, there would probably need to be good benefits to justify pushing them out?
4. Does staying in Div 2 longer and being successful at that level entice more resources to make the transition to being competitive in Div 1 easier.
5. Does Alex Hills have long term plans to move to QAFL in the future?

Some are easy to answer from outside, but not all.

Can't fault your call on Alex hills if they had a plan to move up it would be ideal now.

Interesting comment BP - not sure there was a thirst for clubs to move up when these 2 clubs were going head to head in Div 1. It was only at the back end of the last decade was AFLQ admin even considering the addition of any clubs. Would you use the same logic with Mayne?

In what context? Mayne have shown they are unable to consistently show dominance in the comp with their seniors since their 3-peat a decade ago. When the comp was split div 1 north and south.

Just think it's a bit average to say maroochy and Noosa were "beating up" other clubs in the short period 2017-2019/2020 before they got bored. Loke I said there wasn't any great push from AFLQ to get a SC club in the QAFL during the mid teens unless it was a SC combined team which noone was agreeing to. Both clubs went up when they felt it was the right time to do so and in fact Maroochydore have timed it to perfection if the last 4 years and their results are anything to go by. Noosa possibly fell into the trap that their Div 1 premiership side was going to be capable of competing at QAFL level but that div 1 competition was actually very competitive with Springwood, Mayne and Caloundra all providing pretty good oppo most seasons.

Everyone has their own reality. Can think it’s average but most other clubs were looking at going down rather than staying. No points system and no cap and up against the arms race between the two big coast clubs the Brisbane clubs had no hope.

Maroochy have shown they should have been up there for some time. Noosa probably thought it would be easier given their rivalry with Maroochy but haven’t quite got it right yet. Have the facilities, coin and talent so should see it out to success.

Reality was in those last few years before those clubs went up it was them and daylight and it wasn’t changing.

They tried that and it didn’t work one bit. Park ridge didn’t come up and got sent to Friday nights. Aspley did come up and were okay. Pretty sure Kenmore were due to come up and refused too. Just didn’t work back then.

Don’t think it can work now either. Going up a level needs solid foundations off field and buy in from a playing group on field. Can be a slippery slope when clubs hit a level above. This had happened to a wide variety of clubs over the last 10 years

Hang on, even with Coorparoo in it they would still make it back to back. Coorparoo hate finals football and have nightmares against the tigers. Unable to consistently show dominance....what a pathetic statement.

Tell me you’re a Mayne person without telling me you’re a Mayne person . Where were you guys in 2017,2018,2019,2021,2022 and 2023?

Don’t get me wrong. Coorparoo will be haunted by the 2023 GF. However Mayne were clearly the better team this season in 2024 and were a fantastic team.

But you’ve won 1 GF in 8 years. Maybe just settle down. If you also read the rest of the post. Instead of going all in, you’d realise I said they will mostly likely go back to back next year anyway.

They were the walking wounded this year. Mayne’s sledging is laughable.

With the outs Coorparoo had they presented manfully in both grades but just too much to overcome.

Any other club had that level of outs would have been blown away.

Mayne have one in a row. Let’s see how the statement above looks in 10 or so months time.
