Recap at a glance:
  • Harley Reid has signed a two-year extension, which keeps him at West Coast until at least the end of 2028.
  • He still has one season left on his rookie deal, the new extension kicks in for 2027.
  • Cal Twomey reports that the deal could reach up to $2m per year if Harley triggers all incentives (e.g. this is not a base $2m per year deal).
  • This is a straight two year extension, with no player option for a +9 or anything similar.
  • Get a big dog up ya, Victoria.

Two top 5 picks and a player sounds fair
Richmond aren't in a build position to be trading 2x top 5 picks and a player for Reid, considering you can get a very similar player in Dyson Sharp this year, just by holding your picks.

Would set them back massively.

They just drafted like 7 players inside 30, including 3 first round picks, and traded a 2nd round pick for a pick likely to be top 5 this year.

When you think about it logically it’d really be their 2024 2nd round pick and 2025 first round pick for Harley Reid. That’s bargain basement price (I wouldn’t personally let a contracted Reid go no matter the price).

No club has been in a better position to trade two top 5 picks for a (generational) player.

They have North's first this year, which should be top 5. I'd refuse to trade if it wasn't this year's 2 first rounders they hold.

Also, last year's draft was even, not super.

All players, starting from pick 1, have decent flaws in parts of their game.

Last year should get them some decent players, but it'd be a surprise if they got any A+ out of them.

Getting rid of multiple top 5 picks for one bloke would be pretty dumb. They have too many list holes.

Yeah a number of those players Richmond drafted in the top 30 will be busts, just the way it is. Risky going all in on a fatty with no professionalism too

Smith, Hotton, Smillie could all be A graders based on output from last year.

Your last para is exactly what oppo supporters were saying about us when we drafted Harley.

Tiges are in a great position. Outside of the expansion clubs, no club has ever had the single draft haul they had in 2024.

In terms of the picks- I know they have norths first. What I meant was they traded an early 2nd for that pick. So the actual cost of using those two top 5 picks for Harley would be their 2024 2nd rounder and 2025 first rounder.

I reckon 90% of Tigers supporters would give their two firsts for Harley if it came to pass.

Smith?

Hotton's recovery from ACL hasn't gone well, as he's had setbacks.

Smillie could be good. Not many mids at that size actually go on to be A graders though. Everyone's trying to find the next Cripps, after all.

We didn't trade for Harley, which is my point. We already held that pick and no other decent offers came in.

If they're lucky, half of those first rounders will be decent.

Not like they had 5 top 10 picks, after all.

They've been afforded a very good opportunity by North to cash in on a much strong top end this year.

Of course they would. Vic supporters are obsessed over the idea of their club getting Harley.

I'm sure Carlton supporters were throbbing when they got Judd. They also had better top end talent when they got him.

How'd that work out?

As a hypothetical, If Harley wanted to leave , what would get deal done?
If Essendon and Melbourne miss finals I could see us asking for both firsts (Essendon hold Melbourne's first) and their future first (2 x top 10 picks and Essendon's F1). We would then trade some of that to Sydney for Warner. If you're offering a ten year, 20 million contract (as rumoured) you need to pay up imo.

I'm saying this early. But under no circumstances does Harley Reid get traded without us picking up Dyson Sharp.

I can live with a JHF (Harley Reid) swap to Matt Rowell Clone (Dyson Sharp).

In fact I'd back a straight swap of Harley Reid for the Matt Rowell clone.

Now there is a scenario where we could straight swap Warner for Harley but I back Sharp so much that I'm willing to say

Sharp (Rowell clone) > Warner. I cant say that about freddy

I can’t be bothered doing multi quotes.

Smith- yes, he has ability to be an A grader in the mould of a Zak butters.

Hotton- granted his recovery from ACL has been trickier than he’d like, once he does get back on the park he has X factor and could be an A grader. He’s a longer term prospect because of his injury but I’d liken him to Hewett in the sense that both were top 5 based on talent but slid for different reasons.

Smillie- think we have similar general view.

Carlton didn’t **** up the Judd era because of a lack of talent, they messed up because they were a basket case, and were a basket case long before and long after Judd.

Richmond have a very solid base of draft picks that they can use two top 5 picks on an 20 year old Harley without compromising their long term future. Especially given what they gave up to get that pick from north.

If we can consider giving up our first + extras for 23 year old Warner. Two firsts for Harley is a no brainer for tigers.

Are you talking about Jagga Smith?

Also, what's this 'very solid' base of draft picks Richmond have?

We haven't seen much from draftees prior to last year and last year's haven't even played a game yet.

I think you’re being overly critical of Richmond.

They have 19 players 21 or under. 6 players picked in top 20 and 12 in top 30.

We could say an identical thing about our own young players.

We haven’t seen anything/much from guys we’ve drafted over the same period except Ginbey and Reid.

Harley is a proven commodity, still not even 20, and far more appealing than taking those two top 5 picks to the draft.

Richmond would do it, their supporters would be happy about it, and it would be good business.

In the scenario that was to come to pass most west coast fans would rather Harley over this years first pick and a second top 5, so would Tiges (and 17 other clubs).

Reid is worth a decent amount more than any of Warner or sharp.
Sharp isn't a guaranteed top [emoji637] pick

Agree, Harleys value is higher than Warner, especially as Reid is contracted and Warner isn’t and Sharp hasn’t shown anything close to what Harley showed going into his draft year.

Yes but who is Smith?

Harley may be more appealing to them but they arguably have more list holes than we do.

Just go back to the Baker trade threads and you'll see Richmond supporters shitting all over their recruitment for the past 6-8 years whenever Matt Clarke was brought up.

Their supporters have been very critical of their drafting up until last 2 years, due to so many misses nut that's because they were in a similar spot to WCE, due to ladder position not giving them enough high draft picks to rejuvenate but they then went out and got Taranto & Hopper, which now appears to be a costly mistake.

They also didn't pick a true ruck this draft(opted for a fwd/ruck) and they don't have any likely KPDs, outside of Gibcus, who's perma-injured.

You've also left Hough and Maric out of your 'haven't seen much' line. Hough's definitely better than anyone Richmond's drafted in the same period, for starters.

Last year may end up the greatest draft of all time for them but that's years away from being known and there's not much else on the list to justify throwing away 2x top 5 picks and a player, for HR, as per Aristotle's suggestion.

We all know Richmond have a "solid base of draft picks", but they are all unproven, and there will be a number of duds in there.

Two top 5 picks is very risky for a team like the Tigers. Harley is not low risk, his weight fluctuates and he's never been able to run out games in the middle. He could be the AFL version of Zion Williamson

If you really believed that Harley could be the AFL version of Zion Williamson you’d take Tiges picks and run, but my gut tells me you’d rather Harley….

We can build a team around this guy. We have some nice draft picks in November.
Harley can name his price to any club in the competition and won't have any problems in getting a club to pay it.
Dillon and Mumma Kane will probably help one of the bankrupt Victorian clubs financially to get him.
Continued success and playing in the finals is the best way to help keep him in Perth.
The coverage from The Worst has been over the top, give the young man some space.
The best the rest of us fans can do is to loudly show our appreciation and love for his efforts on the field.
He will captain this club to its next premiership.
