Autopsy Some promising signs but Hawks too good

Because when in the last 10 years have we shown the fight Lions did in 2023? against a rampant Pies side lost by a kick and a awful play on call.

2024 lost multiple players to season ending injuries fighting for a place in the 8 and won the flag from FIFTH.

They have the benefit of the doubt we dont

Look on the one day it counts we haven’t. But we didn’t get there without showing grit and fight more often than not

In 2022 we were 8th at round 16. To make a GF from there, especially with a young side, shows a lot of grit. Unfortunately, unlike Brisbane, we didn't get to play the worst-performing grand final side of the last decade.

Brisbane showed a lot of resolve last year and they deserve credit for that. But at this time last year, they were just 0-1, same as we are right now.

You are nothing until you prove you're something.

They earned a lot after 2023 as well not just 2024.

Our GF have been over at either quarter time or before HT..

Like its not even comparable even when things are massively in our favor.

Last year we won games fighting back from
not even showing up for the start of the game, the side showed a surprising amount of self belief , courage , grit

I think that's why the grand finals become extra baffling.

You expect them to fight back.

Not in grand finals I don't.

Grand finals are statistically the most likely fixture across the season to be a blow-out. If a team doesn't start well, their day is almost certainly only going to get worse.

All 3 blow outs I expected a token 10 minute burst at least , maybe not as good as 06 but something.

Yeah though you are right it usually won't happen.

Watching the replay. Up to half time and Wicks has been sensational, would be happy if he reinvented himself after I wrote him off a long time ago as a productive forward.

Unsurprising that in that play you managed to find fault in what Warner was doing.

Could he have done more to impact there? Yes, he could've. But I also think Warner's within his right in that situation to expect that Papley takes care of it. You can see him watching and almost waiting for Papley to do something, just as I was watching it at home on my couch, then when Warner realises Sicily's basically gonna get a disposal out unimpeded, Warner snaps into action. Too late, sure. But it was largely on Papley.
IDK what I have to do with it, the evidence is in that footage which you admitted. Warner should have identified the next link and run hard to impact it, but was happy to jog along doing SFA "pacing himself" which he seems to do an awful lot of. Saving himself for those impact moments I guess, which are bloody good I'll admit.

No coincidence his half-time walk-off interview showed a guy looking like he had thongs on and was walking down Bondi Road for a swim. 2 tackles for the game. If he was putting in defensively he'd have 2 per quarter.

I'm betting we see a lot more of 'One Way Warner' before the end of the season.

By your own admission you're a fairly vocal critic of Warner, so I was not surprised that you took a moment where Papley clearly wasn't good enough, defended Papley over it, and then shifted responsibility onto Warner.

If an opponent has the ball, it's the player nearest to him who needs to impact the most, not the player second-nearest.

I've been a vocal critic of how the coaches have instructed Warner to play. Not of the player himself who is obviously a gun and was from the day he stepped foot in the door.
Papley did his job in closing the options Sicily had and containing the threat, I'm not sure how anyone who watches football cannot see the weakness in our defense was in others not identifying the next and possibly only option. Papley saw it.

I agree that the second and third options after that are a weakness for us when defending. Especially when I see players getting sucked in to the contest, thinking they are going to impact, then they fail to impact and leave their man out in the open for a receive and clean break.

But the first option is also a weakness for us. We just don't put enough heat on the ball-carrier. Our version of "heat" is often the kind I cited from Papley. Hovering around the ball-carrier rather than straight up putting body on them, tackling, bumping, smothering. Whatever's necessary to stop them from getting that first possession out in the first place.

Take care of that first player by causing the turnover, and you don't need to worry what the second and third guy in the opposition's chain will do. They'll be on the back foot.

If you run through the team that played Hawthorn the improvement is mostly there, pretty much everyone except maybe Wicks can play anyway from a reasonable amount to a shitload better. Warner was pretty good but we know he has had way better games, ditto Heeney. Then so many were way off. There is a lot of improvement just from within the current squad

Only thing that worries me is the reliance on heeney. We almost don’t win unless he is best on or close to. The season he has last season was somthing else and to back that up is unlikely.

You can but do the ins improve our ability to get the ball first from the middle? it cost us the game against Hawthorn and a team with more dynamic forwardline would of punished us further
