Need to bring pressure the games I watched was as bad as I have seen us play under fly, Shultz is just hanging on, lipinski very disappointing after his preseason, reef was ok without being great but with the ball coming in with zero pressure our backs had no chance

Out: long
In Houston

Sub WHE
Love to know the tackle count from our players.
39 is poor

I’m worried that not only him but several of our senior players were outsprinted yesterday.
Looked ugly late.
McRae may need to bite the bullet sooner rather than later on some.
I’ll hold this week but….
I can’t see us sustaining Lipinski, Elliott, WHE, Crisp, Pendles and Sidey all together all the time.
Rotation is needed soon me thinks.
Problem was that as well as being outsprinted we got done over in terms of endurance too, so we need the endurance running of a few of those.

I'm done with him. He's one we have to move past if we're going to improve. His lack of leg speed was so bad yesterday that every GWS player who was being chased by him saw it as an opportunity to run away from him.
I heard people say he was timid after he recovered from shoulder

Don’t think it was anything to do with shoulder
I think he needs to go back to vfl and learn how to escape from bruise free football mentality and harden the F#%* up or else it should be over for him with us

The problem is lippy has friends in high places it seems and gets picked no matter what

I reckon he was timid way before his shoulder. Nah, in all honesty, he's slow and besides running a lot, we need a bit more than that.

A few changes I'd like to see starting this week.

I love Pendlebury just as much as the next person but think yesterday was absolutely telling and I would love to be able to keep him fresh for the middle to back end of the season when the game slows down and the weather gets colder. He's a perfect sub candidate IMO who can play in all thirds of the ground.
Keep JDG out as long as he needs to make sure he is primed to go. No point rushing him in, only to re-injure a groin and play injured for an entire season.

I thought WHE was poor and whilst Long showed a bit when he came on, he adds to our one paced midfield.

Think the MMM boys will enjoy the bigger expansion of the MCG and cooler weather this week. Have to give it another 2-3 weeks before you consider a change.

How I would go in;

B: Quaynor, Moore, McInnes
HB: Houston, Howe, Maynard
C: Sidebottom, Naicos, Parker
HF: Lipinski, Mihocek, Elliott
F: Hill, McStay, Schultz
R: Cameron, Perryman, Crisp
INT: McCreery, Jaicos, Allan, Membrey, Pendlebury (sub)

Parker in on a wing (deserves a go), allows Lipinski up to a HFF where he can use his elite field kicking to our forwards.
Jaicos to go again in the back 7, but flexibilty to push up to a wing. Allan to have a larger role on the inside with Crisp, and McCreery to play a 30-70 mid/fwd split, but exclusively as a CBA mid where he can use his power and strength. We NEED to have a point of difference mid with speed away from the stoppage, and think he could be the guy who has some x factor for us.

I'd have Perryman matched up on JHF at the contest, and Crisp/Sidebottom to run with Rozee.
Lipinski doesn’t have elite kicking skills , it’s a myth. elite kicking skills is Houston and Nick level.

Crisp is still quick and should have more midfield/centre bounce appearances. Elliot and WHE have enough pace. Pendles, Sidey and Lipinski are all in the slow category
Problem is the 3 slowies can run out the game. Something we were in short supply of against GWS. Hawks and GWS are two teams we'll struggle to run with and will have to beat convincingly in other ways.

Lippa was fine, but he's a preseason specialist as a slower game with more space suits him perfectly - don't let his preseason form create expectations. Yesterday was par.
4 disposals before half time if that is par for a player on the wing then our expectations are way to low

He had a good third quarter. But yeah, I'd be having one of Lippa or Pendles sub most weeks. I wouldn't play both. They're too slow until a bit of freshness has gone out of the game.

McCreery has speed, a long kick and can hit the scoreboard. Long hasn’t shown any such traits.

Ins: Houston, Parker (if WHE injured)
Outs: Long, WHE
Like McCreery in the midfield due to his speed, aggression and takes the game on, just needs to be a bit smarter with he's ball use when surrounded by the opposition, can often turn it over.

Pendles or Lippa as sub. Them together makes us too slow, but both will be very effective if coming on fresh later in the game.

I feel like we have enough good kicks in our backline especially when we add Houston this week and don’t see Josh as a defender; wing and occasional midfield stints please. Both he and Sidey are much better pushing back as wingers defensively and providing links to midfield/forwards for mine not permanent defenders. Back in a Parker or Ryan if Markov is not available. Lipinski might serve us better in his usual mid/fwd role over Membrey. Crisp back into the centre bounces please. Bring back our manic pressure please.
I am assuming we went with seasoned bodies first up but we need to have courage at the selection table from here on in and start “managing” some senior players rather than trying to remake them in unfamiliar positions.
On Membrey. On a number of occasions he made great runs and found space but was burnt on the lead.
That intellect and experience is invaluable- once the team get more accustomed to looking for him then he will make a huge difference up forward.
You can’t buy his smarts.

Whilst I agree that I think he could be effective, I also think we need Cox if we continue to hold it up to wait until we've got the forwards in place and I think we'll continue with that to stop us getting burnt badly in transition. Someone has to give way.

It is not a role requiring huge pace these days. More endurance and smarts to run pocket to pocket
He can play the +1 at the contest. This is where we get the most out of him I reckon. The ability to hold onto the ball and release someone into space

In a choice between Cox and Membrey I agree Cox is preferred, against elite defenses with great interceptors like GWS. The height of Cox is very unsettling.

I have read post after post in threads on our board so every time anyone mentions Reef - (who showed some good signs yesterday in his first AFL game at Full Back), I am going to read Moore.

Why does our captain get such a free ride from this board? Moore needs to be one of the best intercept backman in the league for us to win. Taylor, Andrews and co lead their teams out of defence.

Moore needs to get angry and lead this team.

Reef given time will be good support.
We need Moore to lift!!!

Could Drop most of the Backline really at the Moment

Good intercept defenders have been having a field day against us for years. What concerns me is that Cox was there for most of those years and it didn't make a difference. I just see it as a case of rinse and repeat. Membrey gives us a point of difference that we haven't had for a while. The whole side was bad and I don't think Membrey was any worse. He has to be given another chance, especially at the G this week
