After that Crows player walked the ball in for a point with no pressure around him, then straight after they give Rankine a 50m for our guy on the mark running BACK from the mark, (insane when you think about it) I turned the TV off. I wasn't going to put myself through any more of that umpire cheating, if only for the sake of my mental health. They miss all the free for us, but give everything to them.
Utter corruption, you can't convince me otherwise.
I love the Pies , but the AFL is a joke . They can start by having an even draw. It's the very first tenet of any competition. Let alone, allowing ex players of a club to umpire games that club is playing in. Imagine that in the EPL.. Steven Gerrard refereeing Liverpool's games lol.
Which AFL umpire is a former AFL player? The only one I can think of is David Rodan (Goal Umpire) and ex Richmond, but he's cool and has an engaging smile (seems to enjoy his work :D)

Perryman is magnificent.

This was an important win. Disciplined and professional.

The club has a difficult week ahead. How do you focus the players on a game of football when a family so close to the club is experiencing the ultimate loss?

The care, compassion, & humanity shown by Fly was deeply touching.

Loved the way Fly had a not so subtle swipe at Sam Mitchell and Hawkscum.
Said in the presser that in the MSD there are guys like Ned Long waiting there, who just need the opportunity to be believed in, and we take him on board. Now he is just such an important part of our team, due to the support and faith we have shown in him.

You get the feeling from the outside that Fly has built a really strong culture that enables players to bring their best. We are extremely fortunate to have brought him to the club.

In the first few minutes of the match I thought there was a clear insufficient intent to keep the ball in (our forward line).

The interpretation of the rule is broken.

I think your last sentence is the answer to the question in the one immediately prior.

The umps were terrible.

Yeah, agree.

At the end of the season the AFL needs a meeting and to sort through some of these rules and the interpretations.

Often it's just the luck of the bounce between it being paid and not paid. There was one bit of play where I thought we did really well and we were penalised for insufficient intent (name escapes me) the player went by foot but was under pressure and in the build up had been great. it was near the MCC.

The umps were terrible.
Mostly they were, I agree. Except in the 4th quarter when they awarded WHE a free kick in the goal square, when he tackled the Crow defender, who had ducked his head trying to get a free and made no effort to dispose of the ball. And of course Jordan ex-Dork in the commentary box objected to the decision and mocked co-commentator Gary Lyon who disagreed with him

How good was it singing the song whilst Crows were having a shot on goal.. 😆 loved it. Particularly when they missed.
It was spine tingling seeing everyone sing the song in unison despite it stopping halfway through.

There were a fair few Adelaide supporters; quite a few came across from South Australia (relatively speaking). I was worried about their height as many were I’m sure; turned out to be they were a bit cumbersome at times.
That was a very impressive win, a grind in many respects. Tough match. Well done Pies 👏👏👏. Winter at the G today.

I read this as you being concerned about Adelaide supporter height

I was more worried that they would be klepto cousin-breeders

Which AFL umpire is a former AFL player? The only one I can think of is David Rodan (Goal Umpire) and ex Richmond, but he's cool and has an engaging smile (seems to enjoy his work :D)
Leigh Fisher from St Kilda has umpired many Saints ganes. He's actually a decent umpire and I'm not suggesting he's been biased in the past , but even if you are pretending to have a modicum of integrity in the AFL you simply cannot allow that situation. Amateurish to say the least. With the AFL, it's a case of where do you start, around questions of integrity.

Was at the game today with my 3 kids, my 2 daughters first game today, I really wanted them to experience a win for their first game and they got it, they were so happy at the end of the game singing the song.

My sons 5th game and he hasn't seen a loss as of yet, I love this club so much how it makes me and my kids happy!

Even my partner loves Collingwood now, when we first got together she never really was interested in footy but now she's a member and loves it!

Sorry guys not really analysing the game or anything but life's just good for me and my tribe ❤️

Fly's presser

Bit of a seesawing affair, until you got 4 consecutive goals and broke away a bit?
"It was a struggle wasn't it? The conditions made it that way and then high stoppage in that third quarter. There was elements of transition at times, but it was hard to transition the ball. I think in that second quarter I'd never seen us miss so many short kicks. The breeze funnily enough was going against us at that time and then we miss ground ball and all of a sudden 'whoa' go back and score or something happens. It was tricky conditions out there. It was a 'fight day' like 'turn up and get to work' day, 'pull up your socks and let's go'. Our contest was really strong for major parts of it and ultimately probably got us the job done".
It seemed like your pressure really ramped up after Soligo put Adelaide in front and you answered the challenge?
"Yeah, the scoreboard is reflective of our pressure at times and late in that third quarter we were like 250 [pressure rating] or something for 10 minutes and we kicked two or three goals. It was something we were trying to aim to get in the game a bit more than what we had in the first half. That third quarter when we got a little bit of a break, it was a pivotal part of the game".
It was obviously an incredibly hard day for the entire football community, how are you feeling?
"You're going straight to my heart. I'm going to do my best to...can I come back to that? I'd just love to get through some of the other stuff and then talk emotion after that. Is that ok?"
Yeah sure. You gave some of the senior players a break last week and the likes of Maynard and Pendlebury really stepped up late, so the decision to rest them paid off?
"Yeah, I thought our backline was super strong. Howie was massive and Bruzzy leading from the front and Josh Daicos down back. They [Adelaide] beat us for inside 50s, which has become a bit of a pattern in the last couple of weeks, but our backs have been enormous to stop scoring. They [the opposition] don't score when they go in there. That's a big part of the game and then you go to the other end and we're scoring quite efficiently; nearly 50% of the time going inside 50. It's a good formula, I'd love to get a bit more territory. Our backs were massive today".
Obviously the weather helped, but Thilthorpe didn't kick a goal and Walker was subbed off tactically because he didn't have any influence. I'm sure without Darcy Moore you had some worries about the lack of height down back, but you held them off?
"I said during the week that I heard rain was coming. I sort of did my little rain dance because it makes a difference. It's hard to mark the ball. I wouldn't be judging his game, Thilthrope's without scoring, because he had influence in the air. It was very hard to mark the ball. I thought it was a challenging day and it was a ground level game, and pressure and scrap. It was hard to score at times. Not sure it would have been the greatest spectacle if you were here live in your poncho, but we're rapt to get the four points".
How much did Brayden Maynard relish being captain today?
"The leadership group made the decision and we got two incredible vice-captains haven't we? Bruzzy and Nick [Daicos]. He's an incredible emotional generator and infectious around the group. I won't repeat what he said when the boys told him he was captain, but he was pretty pumped".
Can you tell us the significance of the shoes you're wearing today?
"The shoes were painted by Debbie Beasley from the Tennant Creek and we went up to Tennant Creek early in the year as a group of staff and players; mainly the new players. We went to their Art and Cultural Centre and saw the incredible work they're doing and some music and art. We went into there and met all the ladies painting and everything, and formed a great connection. Pretty much all the boots on the weekend or today was painted from Tennant Creek and the incredible design. Mine represents the journey that we've been on together and then some other parts of natural remedies and medicines from the land. We celebrated our indigenous culture today before the game. Really important to us. It was a day where I stood in my shoes and said it's a 'good day to be really comfortable in your own shoes'".
Back to the pressure element, Ned Long in the third quarter had a goal saving tackle and then a minute later Beau McCreery laid a tackle which produced a goal. Are those the elements you really highlight?
"They're moments aren't they? Moments that gets the crowd roaring and the Beau [McCreery] one in particular. Jamie [Elliott] takes a mark with 5 seconds to go in the [third] quarter. That's a massive massive kickstart to three quarter time and into the last quarter. We're really proud of that part of our game. I said the game was working class today. 'Get your hands dirty; no easy ball and then put pressure on'. We got some guys that really lift us in that part of the game".
This time last year, Ned Long isn't on your list. I think before Gather Round he was the sub for the first 3 or 4 games and since then he hasn't looked back?
"I thought he was enormous in the third quarter. Just contest to contest and big body. It's a great story isn't it? We got the mid-season draft coming up and for years we go 'oh, there's not much talent out there' but there's guys like him just sitting there waiting to be given another opportunity and believed in and loved and supported. Sometimes you got to believe in some that maybe haven't had that in previous environments, so we're rapt to have him and he's an important part of our team right now isn't he?"
Adelaide clearly came in with a plan to tag Nick Daicos. Teams are worrying about tagging Nick every week, but how much time are you spending with plans to counter these tags?
"We've had many plans and to be honest I grabbed probably six or seven players that can support Nick [Daicos] a bit more late yesterday and said 'I don't think we're supporting him enough being tagged'. We went to work on that a little bit today, which means Nick plays...I won't give too much away...but players a few different roles. It's a challenge. He had a bad day 28 touches did he? I'm not sure.
N Daicos had a pretty good day?
"Yeah, I don't want to write the story of what you guys see his game being, but we're rapt with how we're supporting Nick a bit more this week than we have in the past".
Are you happy with the Daicos boys handballing more than kicking?
"What I've learnt to do with the Daicos brothers is don't tell them how to use the ball. They're incredible talent. You see what Josh was doing there today. It was like the ball was dry for him and same for Nick. I try to not get in the way of their decision making. I try to get the ground, support the ground and make easier decisions, but they're exceptional talents".
Did you shield your players of the news regarding Adam Selwood?
"Yeah, we did. There is no book written on this stuff. We got the news this morning and it was horrible. We didn't really know what to do to be honest other than maybe give it space to sort of see where it fits with all of us. I know the coaches knew because we had to get to work Scoot [Scott Selwood] getting on the plane to get back to Perth. It's horrible; there is so much sadness. We protected the players thinking that might have been the right thing. I don't know if it was but we told the whole club straight after the game. I just want to send my love to the Selwood family".

Not a shock that the majority of those have come under Fly. He has fostered such strong passion & love for this club from its fans.
And plays a brand of football that everyone wants to watch.

Start that game at 2pm and with better weather and you probably get another 5k.

It's quite clear the 1st para was about the supporters - the 2nd para references the game.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about him. In the various cricket comps in which I've played and umpired, ex-players sometimes get recruited to umpiring ranks. Sometimes the cricket association steers their appointments away from their former clubs (sometimes the umpires request this because they want to avoid a COI), but sometimes it isn't possible.

Beau's ability to impact the game is right up there, whether up forward or through the middle. His tackling, run, contested ball work and ball use are all really strong. We've seen great examples of this in the last two games. He's an elite role player in multiple positions.

This is why it fascinates me that some often call for Beau to be dropped. Is it because he doesn’t rack up the disposals? He doesn’t have to, with the way he plays and what he brings to the team. Maybe he’s one of those players where you have to see him play live to fully appreciate his contribution.

Once again we have dad Peter to thank. Not just the genes, but when he made the boys work with the ball in the rain. And made them play footy with balloons ha ha.

Fantastic stuff.

That’s one of the constant things people link with Beau is that he doesn’t get stats. What he brings to this team doesn’t appear on the stats sheet
