I liked the comment about his interest in what Ross Lyon is building.
They’re clearly having a crack and obviously Lyon has some pull
I’ve heard Jimmy Bartel - against the normal run of media doomsayers- comment multiple times that he’s bullish on Saints with the kids they’re bringing through …maybe some in the industry can see it …at least they’re firing the right shots for a gun mid!

Bartel is actually one of the few measured commentators that does not put the boots into us.

What am I missing with him? He was running around like a headless chook like the rest of his team. If we are getting him I hope he has already checked out mentally and is just going through the motions.
I just checked hia stats and he racked up 18 disposals tonight which I was surprised by cause it didnt seem like he got near it .... most worrying though ia that he only took 1 mark and laid 1 tackle

He looks a shell of a player compared to last year when he was emerging as a genuine gun ...... so yes .... praying he has checked out

We can only hope because there is no way he is worth 1.7m a year on his current form ... not a chance in hell

What are the permutations in achieving that Alan?
Well there's a lot to play out before then - other players could get involved and other picks might swap clubs - but a hypothetical could be:

Saints get: Aleer
Giants get: Steele (Twomey recommended on Gettable that Giants go after a ready-made mid)

Saints get: FRDP (Cats)
Cats get: Marshall

Saints get: Bergman + 3RDP
Power get: FRDP (Cats) + F2 (Saints)

This isn't perfect but could form the crux of a potential permutation of trades. All just hypotheticals for now, highly doubt this eventuates anyway given how unpredictable this stuff is

This year, yes.
F1 though, a possibility.

There's every chance that our F1 is a top 5 pick. I wouldn't count on sudden improvement.

Yes we should see some young players improve, but 10 players in our current best 22 are 29 or older, and some of them will begin or continue to drop off. We may also lose a few to trade/retirement.

If we bring in TDK, that's not much of an upgrade on Marshall, if at all. Bergman is looking like he could be a good acquisition, though if we lose Nas that's a net loss. Aleer doesn't look any better than Caminiti in defence.

I wouldn't necessarily bank on us being better than anyone other than Richmond and WC next year.

Geelong

Receives: Bailey Smith, pick 45
Gives up: Picks 17, 38

If we get Bergman to nominate us, we should be using the Bailey Smith trade as a precident. That's what I'd be comfortable with.

Problem is that Smith was coming off a couple of shit years including injury and mental health. Dogs were on a hiding to nowhere.

Our first could well be in that range. Good chance we finish above Blues and Bombers on current form. If TDK (definite), Allen (likely) and Draper (unlikely) all get Band 1 compo we'd be looking at pick 9 for finishing 13th.

Blues are in freefall at present.

With their draw below they could even lose every game left.

Defeating the Dons is their main chance for a win, follow by the Dees.

On the plus side their % is currently 12% better than ours.

On the negative side the Dons % is 9% worse than ours. So they would have to win two more games than us to go above us with their draw and form that would seem unlikely.

Our improvement next year will ofc be catalysed by the new recruits etc., but I think its more about the kids starting to hit their straps whilst also getting a couple back from injury (Henry, Pou, a full back, hopefully King)

Our 2023 intake of Wilson, Garcia, Hastie, Arie, Collard will be into their 3rd years which by trend is a common year for breakout contenders. Pou would be pretty much a 3rd year player too given his injuries this year. Dilena said in an interview that he genuinely thought Pou would've taken the next step this year. Caminiti is yet to do a full pre-season in defence. Tauru yet to have a pre-season. Travaglia another year in the gym. Henry a full off-season to refresh that knee

I dont think the 10 players above 29 in best 22 comment is accurate - wasn't that only for the game against the Dogs? Jones is an automatic exclusion from that and if we trade Marshall & Steele then thats down to 7. Webster is replaced by LOC/Hastie then we're down to 6 which seems like a sweet spot. Butler also a guy we can easily replace if Lance pulls his head in. Realistically, the only 29+ guys who make a significant difference to our side over the kids are Wilkie, Sinclair, Macrae, Wood, and arguably Hill/Steele depending on how you interpret the leadership and cultural side of things

I still reckon our future first for Bergman is about right considering he is out of contract. We can invite Kane Cornes to the negotiations as he will tell Port it is a bargain because we are shit and it will definitely be a top 4 pick next year.

In reality, we will be premiers.
Don't risk our future First entirely considering we'll be playing even more youth in 2026- could easily be a Top 3-5 Pick.

Maybe something like:
1x First this year (Marshall). 1x Second next year. Swap of Future Firsts with Port.

Also let's us Death Ride Port for an entire season!

I hope we keep Steele & Marshall ... we still need experience

Aleer needs to show more for mine
100% I don't see the upside to getting Aleer at all. He's not that tall (same as Barratt more or less) and seems lost on field with no skillset setting him apart. I'm sure there's better options available and considerably cheaper.
Throw the 900 grand being touted for him at mids from the Nepo clubs not getting a gig.

Would rather keep Dougal lmfao
Would be surprised if we don’t keep Dougal. Experienced defenders are hard to come by and at worst he plays VFL. Doubt he attracts a great deal of interest in the open market beyond a 2 year deal elsewhere

Experience is one thing, but it needs to translate to being effective on the field, and so far, we are not getting a lot out of Steele or Marshall, regardless of what they have contributed in past seasons.

This should now be the transition time, where the club need to make a decision about the future or hold on to the past in order to win a couple of more games. The season is shot, so get the youth in there.
