I'd suggest this early of a decision is more about focussing his training and integration into Carlton, prepping him for the start of his career, as much as anything.

Instead of splitting time across both clubs, focussing all in in one club narrows the focus. Smart thinking by the young man.
Not sure what the rules are with under 18s but would love to see him spend the pre season training with the club and have a few games in the VFL to get him ready.

Obviously will play the champs for VIC and likely CTL at Echuca too but I feel like the best thing for Cody would be building his frame and body to be ready to come in day 1. Still very skinny in the upper body and could do with some more power in his running.

HAve not heard this?

Our recruiting team had a woodie for Kane Tenace who went to Geelong at Pick 9. There was a suggestion that AFL (who really held the keys to our office at the time) were going to withhold funding or something similar if we didn’t pick Walker

Pretty sure this is about helping Carlton manage its salary cap.

If we let TDK walk, trade Curnow, McKay and Walsh.... we might be able to afford Cody once his rookie contract ends :p

Pick 7

I have never seen or heard anything about the AFL 'strongly encouraging us to select Andrew Walker'

Yep pick 7 - I was going from memory - but the story was told to me by a very spirited member. 😉

Woah!! Easy there, Cody - we’ve already got a pretty stacked lineup, a solid well coached game plan, and a bunch of young guns busting their guts to break in. And honestly, there’s no guarantee you’re even go… ahh who am I kidding? What jumper number do you want, champ?
Number will actually be interesting, pending the career of one Jack Silvagni. May even decide to make another number his own guven Jack should have quite a few years in front of him. May align for Arli to get the “1” down the track if Cody is comfortable with an alternate number.

I have one in my head, he has used at times in his junior career, but won’t disrespect the holder with premature suggestions. Needless to say it needs to be a low, probably single digit.

There is a history of “underage” kids from Northern academies playing VFL. I am actually expecting Cody to line up in the VFL this year after the firm commitment has been made.

Very true. Leo Lombard won a VFL premiership at 16 iirc, so surely at 17 Cody can play a few games.

Harley Reid did it in his draft year.

I notice Cody hasn't played with the Pios since round 12 (22nd June), missing the last 3 games.
Anyone know if he's injured or just having his loads managed?
No game for them this week, then only 4 rounds of Coates left.

that was a part of an AFL program, Reid played some for us in the VFL, so did Nate Caddy. Jagger had some memorable ones for Richmond VFL.

But let’s not forget that AFL Head Office back in 2003 had to strongly encourage us to select Andrew Walker with our Pick 2.

This is the first I've ever heard of this.

A very dear friend of mine was part of the recruiting team for another club and was at all the TAC games.
He'd been instructed to go watch another kid they were looking at recruiting, can't remember who it was but remember he was a defender, but everyone had their eyes forced on Walker.
My mate said he was mesmerised by what Walker did because he was so fast and clean with every possession. Told me about him prior to the draft and said he was going to be a star.
I was hoping like heaven we'd get him, and we did.

Ah, Vic Country... of course. That would explain it. Probably just a week off either side of it to manage loads.

Arlo a few years after Cody. Walker brothers has a nice ring to it 😍.

From memory the early talk in that draft was around Cooney at No.1 and then and guys like Kane Tenace.

I think Walker sort of came with a late rush towards the end of the season.
