No one said you can't hold Butters to his contract. If Wilkie or Butters wanted to go, it is up to the respective clubs to determine whether the trade is worth it based on what is on offer. Otherwise you hold the players to their contracts.

Tom Papley was kept to his contract after requesting a trade to Carlton because Sydney wasn't happy with what was being offered. The rest is history.
