NO TROLLS Rankine handed a 4 match suspension by the AFL integrity unit for a homophobic slur against opponent

correct.

even if it acheives the same thing
The problem is, there's a loud minority that are irrationally angry on behalf of a marginalized minority group, and that only hurts that minority group, not help them.

Angry Inside Out GIF by Disney Pixar

These types just need to calm the farm, yes as you say outcome is important, but the outcome is damaged if it's to appease the angry mob.

Unpopular take perhaps (and not condoning the act), but to me, the term 'f***t" has largely lost it's meaning over the years, much like 'w****r' has. To me, both these terms are more akin to calling someone a *d**khead' these days.

Obviously no one can go inside Rankin's head, but I would not be surprised if his true intent was not a deliberate attack on homsexuals, but more a very poor choice of words in the heat of the moment.
"F.....t" is akin to calling someone a 'dickhead' these days is it?

Please do explain.

I think my favorite thing when something like this happens is watching the supporters of the club the player plays for attempt to justify or excuse the behavior. At the end of the day, the AFL have set a precedent with 4 weeks given to a player who self-reported, so anything less than that would create some drama.
I find it amusing that the opposing clubs supporters still to play finals have a huge interest in it.
And truth be told are just wishing for a season ending sanction of a star player which helps their team, most wouldn't even care about this if their team weren't playing finals.

The reasonable level heads know that the so called precedent was ****ed so give it a rest it won't work.

Off topic but this is incorrect.

Slurs, sledging, banter whatever term you wanna use has been employed as a psychological tool to undermine opponents in sports, since sports began. And not just in sports, in any combative arena / field.

That doesn't excuse what Rankine said, but let's not pretend that footy players never have and never will again use psychological combat to undermine their opposition.

Running at a player with the ball is part of the actual game though, players using sledging to get in each other's heads isn't actually a function of the sport.

The umpire doesn't award a free kick for good banter

Because one of your players called a Collingwood player a socially unacceptable word? Are you 6 mate?

You're clearly emotional, maybe take a day or two to rationalise it.

BecauS of the pathetic attempts of your supporters hiding the "social justice" in front of blatant contempt for us because you lost on the weekend. And the pathetic moaning about "free kicks".

Ive got no issue with punishments of that magnitude for such slurs. They have no place in our society whether it be from my club, your club, on a football field, in a workplace, at school. Not anywhere.

Dont like the punishment? Well, there is one way to avoid it..

its not like this hasn't been happening. What we we up to now - 6 incidents? Says a lot about Rankine and his immaturity and tendancy to fire off insulting and unaccpetable slurs given how prevalent they have become.
You have no issue with the first coping 3 weeks and then the 10th player (not the same player) getting 12 weeks for a slip of the tongue mistake during a heated game???? TBH, if the roles were reverse and it was Nick Daicos, I will be like you and say he deserve 6 weeks.

i agree, but it doesnt change anything,

certain words dont belong in society anymore,

and quite frankly, there have been enough cases the last couple of seasons that even these pea brains should realize it!

you can't stop people from saying bad things. they made murder illegal, people still murder. they make saying 'f****t' illegal, people will still say it.

Haha mate Adelaide aren't that important nor is a Rd 23 loss.

You're projecting, Collingwood fans are not driving this. This is you acting out, go see a therapist and stop playing the victim.

If you want to apportion blame then blame your player, if it turns out a player from the Pies said something as equally provocative i'll do the same. Your blind speculation is pathetic.

Does your employer provide you with a prescriptive list of allowed/disallowed slurs?

Every organisation I've worked at doesn't. What they do have (and so does the AFL) is clear policies and codes of conduct including guidelines around discrimination, and then leave it up to their employees to be professional and exercise judgement within those policies. Those who exercise poor judgement are disciplined in line with the policy.

Is that not enough? You really think some HR person needs to be updating a live Excel document with specific slurs ranked and colour coded?

We're not talking about a regular employment situation. It's a sport where physical and mental toughness is essential. Sledging has always been part of the game and much of it would be to imply that an opponent is weak, including the word currently in question. Like if the Collingwood players were calling Rankine a girl or a bitch or a pussy.

No, I don't.

Feel free to bookmark or save this post. I'm more than comfortable calling a Collingwood player out should they do it.

Then report it and they can set a new precedent.

Why do people equate being able to cop a sledge with being mentally tough?

didn't the AFL say it would be a case by case basis after graham?

Adelaide reported not collingwood
Collingwood made Adelaide aware who then handed it to the AFL integrity unit. AKA, you tell or we will.

AFL has said they will consider each case on its merits, as they should which is why Graham got a shorter ban as he immediately self reported and showed remorse which is different to the other club telling your club who then tell the AFL.

You are ignoring the small degrees by which behaviours cast their influence. Other players heard it. If it is accepted then by tiny degrees each or most of them may be slightly more accepting of homophobic language. Fair minded people should be able to see this is not what we want.
So there is still no reason for the AFL to tell their homosexual fans what Rankine said in the heat of the moment to another player?

It is wrong and should be dealt with.
And it could be dealt with secretly as I suggested. Don't forget the AFL never told their fans about the secret drug testing of their drug using players.

The homosexual fans really didn't need to hear what Rankine said in the heat of the moment during a football game.

The AFL was never a welcoming place to be gay. The 7 instances in the past 2 years has just confirmed what we already know.
If homosexuals didn't feel welcomed in the AFL how come Jason Akermanis says that he had openly homosexual teammate during his time at Brisbane, surely he wouldn't of played if he didn't feel welcomed? Would you enter the AFL if you didn't feel welcomed?

Could there be a scenario where the afl offers 3 games, but a heavy fine and, say, a 12 month suspended ban?

It's a way the afl can let him play in a gf (if they make it) while still being tough on the issue.

Some players don't care if they are 100% welcomed or not. Some players can handle that. They shouldn't have to.

And whoever that was wasn't openly homosexual.

It says that the AFL doesn't think homophobia is as big a deal as they did a month ago. how would that be tough on the issue?
