tropicaltiger It was great play by Dempsey. But there was only one possible way he pulls that off with a clear run at their goals and that was if Sonsie or Mansell didn't force contact with him. If Sonsie crashed him then it wouldn't even matter if he smothered the handball, Mansell would have mopped it up. Mansell probably should have applied a shepherd first to allow Sonsie time and space to get past.
I definitely thought Mansell should have gone the shepherd there, either way it was frustrating to watch

He knew what Sonsie does. He turns into the tackle and flicks it over his shoulder. As soon as Sonsie started to roll he loaded to jump.

I think we've seen enough to suggest that he isn't AFL material. Slight of weight players need a bit of mongrel in them to succeed in this game, and I don't see it with Tyler, even outside players still need to stand up in moments.

Reckon he is one of those players who will excel in the VFL where the pressure isn't as great, the bodies are not as big. Sometimes it does take time to get used to the toughness of senior footy, we have seen it with Banks who also looked like he was going down the same path, but I felt it has clicked for Banks this year.

Given the list spots and draft he gets another year. He improved over the last 12 months, if he can improve more, then maybe he makes it.

He has to stop these over head hand balls though, noone else knows about em ffs

If I'm in the hot seat he gets one more year but would understand if he gets delisted or traded.
It feels like a lot of the issues with him are centered around his timidness and unwillingness to endure physicality/physical contact.
If I'm looking at it objectively, yes for the most part the above is factual but in the back half of the year against West Coast and then Collingwood that aspect of his game was not an issue. That tells me that he just needs to find a way to channel that mindset he had for those games and apply it more consistently.
I'd be more concerned if he just didn't have the mental ability to do it at all.

If you told me at the start of the season that he was going to pick up 28 touches in a game at AFL level not playing on ball I would have directed you to the nearest mental institution.
That game against Collingwood where he did that, all of our transition offence was going through him. He worked his backside off and was comfortably one of our best players on the day against a team who were fancied to go on and play in a grand final.
Yes, in the last few rounds he fell back into some bad habits but you can't deny that there's a solid player in there. Those that do deny that just flat out aren't interested in changing their minds or seeing him succeed.

What we have to ask ourselves is, as the team gets better, will he then grow with the team in that respect. I'm in the camp that he will but I understand that it's very much a 50/50 call.

Yeah, I think that's what it comes down to.

Jack Ross too. Move them on. No disrespect, no hard feelings, they're just not providing what we need, and if we could extract some draft currency that matches their potential contributions to a better performing list, then I think the time is right.

The only thing that might save Ross is his age profile is one we're not currently overladen with. Him, Mansell, Balta, Miller and Young the representatives we have in that 25-26 year old age bracket atm. Might leave us a bit short of 28-30 year olds when we're hopefully back contending.

Ross is clearly being asked to play a role for the team and sacrificing a fair bit of his outside game in doing so.

The coaches seem pretty content with his output and im not sure this is a good thing but he's one of the best at delivering into the I50 and hitting targets.

I wonder when list changes will be announced. I presume after the VFL teams year ends

I doubt they will announce many until trade/FA period finishes. I think they will leave their options open if a good deal or two pops up, otherwise they will probably retain most players including Sonsie.

That handball turnover yesterday at half back was a prime example of his issues. He got the ball in a 2 on 1 situation but tried to release the handball as soon as he got it to avoid contact. The ball gets intercepted by Dempsey and Geelong goal. If he takes at least a little bit of contact the ball doesn’t get intercepted and we break away from half back. He simply plays like the biggest squib in the AFL and it hasn’t changed with experience.

Gee it's tough to know what to do with him. You feel like the penny dropped a few weeks ago, was throwing himself
Into the contest and body on the line and then this week was a bit soft. Perhaps put it down to self preservation in a game that wasn't going to be won and the last of the year.

Hes outside game, ball use and decision making has all come on in spades this year and getting up to being a 20p player but seems to just lack confidence and is almost scared to make a mistake which leads to hesitancy.

50/50 at seasons end for mine

Yeah I just don’t see it with him. Looks good in space running around by himself but dodges situations that call for contact or accountability. Footskills aren’t so magical that’s you can overlook his flaws and takes ages to work out what’s he’s doing with it (then goes down the line). He’s different at VFL level though in terms of contested game so it’s given us hope he’ll transfer it to seniors but he just gets pushed around.
