Bit harsh on the media team this time - a response would have needed to go through the right channels. They actually realised something pretty quickly really.
Was an hour and 13 minutes after GWS posted about it.

Don't have an issue with the timing, but it's probably a reflection that we're an older, more rigid organisation that probably could use some updating.

yeah social media admin is probably a raging homophobe
No. Did not mean that. Purely that there would have been approvals required that caused it to be delayed.

GWS seem to give their person more of a free reign. They sometimes skirt close to the edge, but they also push the boundaries more that West Coast seem to be willing to do.

its an hour and 13 mins so it could easily be a case of the socials admin being at lunch or in a meeting 🤷‍♂️

yes smaller organisations are always more agile than bigger ones

Again, harsh - 1 hour and 13 min more for a considered good response is more than acceptable. He wasn't an ex gws player, the article didn't directly reflect on them

Anyway, good on for him speaking up

Those approvals might also have been contacting Mitch himself as West Coast was his employer - GWS have nothing to do with him. Bit less personal.

We got in trouble for referring to our clash jumper as the Yellow Peril on social media.

Beat the GWS 🤘

And if anyone was wondering why it’s a good thing that the AFL is coming down hard on slurs (unless your name is Rankine), here’s your example.
Bit of revisionist history by Mitch though, seeing as he played a sum total of 5 bog average games in his last two seasons and surely would have been delisted had he not "retired'.

He’s previously told the story of how he was offered a deal for 2017 then had it reneged when Sam Mitchell said he’d come over.

I suspect the offer to play on for a couple more years that’s he’s talking about came from another club.

Did his ACL in Round 1, 2015 and missed the rest of the season. That was his one for the year.

Played four games as backup to a suddenly fully stacked Eagles backline of McGovern, Barrass, Shep, Schofield in 2016. Selected in the elimination final no less.

And even if there weren’t some pretty clear mitigating circumstances given he was fresh off an ACL, is it difficult to think that someone who didn’t feel comfortable in their work environment and had clearly lost at least some part of their love for the game might not perform at their best?

Pretty reasonable to accept he’s telling the truth that someone wanted him to play on (Saints were always after him every offseason for a start).

This being your immediate response is… interesting to say the least.

As reported at the time he retired.

"Brown turned down a contract extension at the Eagles in a bid to find a new club in Melbourne, where his netballer wife Shae had moved."

Well he HAS just effectively tarred all his team mates and club of driving him out of the game. I'm just pointing out that at least one of his claims is a bit steep, seeing where his career was actually at.

Everyone knows the AFL is a godawful environment for gay/bisexual men. That's what all the discussion around Rankine (and Graham, and Collard and ...) was about.

Nothing he said was anything new in that sense.

Great stuff Mitch we as fans are sorry that you couldn’t do it sooner for fear and anxiety of the whole landscape and environment.

Proud of you!

Has he tarred his team mates though?

I think it’s a generally well accepted fact that sexuality has been a rather taboo subject in Western societies, and it’s only until relatively recently that people are becoming more comfortable with it and that people feel safe to be open with their sexuality.

Fact that Mitch is the only openly bisexual man in the AFL demonstrates that it’s an issue that men have with acceptance. Applies to men across the board regardless of what team they play for.

The number of women in the AFLW that are open about their sexuality just goes to show that women deal with it a hell of a lot better than men do.

My initial thought on hearing this is - great for Mitch, glad he feels comfortable to be open and out there. Hope it helps others feel the same way and helps dispel some ignorance from insecure men.

There’s no need to feel defensive. We’re capable of intellectual and emotional growth, and just because we’ve acted one way in the past or said some things doesn’t mean that we can’t learn from them.

Good stuff from Mitch. Hopefully WCE and other clubs take this as an opportunity to check in on their current environments and make any improvements they can to help current players who might be in the closet.
