NO TROLLS Rankine handed a 4 match suspension by the AFL integrity unit for a homophobic slur against opponent

Thought the experience of Mitch Brown (the West Coast one) would have been ample evidence - apparently not.
Don't you know? According to the common sense brigade he was just "doing it for attention" or "why didn't he do it when he was playing?"

Being called out for inappropriate behaviour doesn't make them feel good so they take it as a personal attack on them, they have to victimise themselves.

If it happened nowadays, people would genuinely think Nicky Winmar should have kept it to himself, his gesture was unnecessarily provocative, and he'd get deservedly booed the next time he played at Victoria Park for getting Collingwood into trouble.
I couldn’t disagree more. The world has changed and people (most) have grown and have a better understanding of how harmful racism is. And most people are comfortable in calling out that behaviour as totally unacceptable.

I disagree and dont think AFL and sport should be used to champion external causes.
It's not an external cause.

I'm sure gay blokes play the game and there would be gay blokes who are considering playing the game.

And that's not even taking into account the womens' game.

So it is very much relevant to the AFL.

Wow the crows fans on their own board are pathetic. “Woke nonsense” etc etc. Fingers crossed they go out in straight sets, what a spineless org from the top through to their fans.
So you just read the extreme sides of the argument and assumed that represented all of our thoughts? Why is the internet incapable of nuance? Clearly we weren’t all booing, but sure, paint us with the same brush if it helps you.

There will always be sections of every supporter base across any sport in the world that boo for a multitude of reasons, good luck stopping it. I find booing pointless, but in a crowd of 50000 I’m sure you’ll always have a small minority that think it’s their right to boo if they’ve paid for a ticket. Some people were booing Frampton, it’s never rational.

I think not tbh given the Adam Goodes experience. The usual commentators had a field day with him, I cite it as a classic example of racism being given legitimacy because he pointed at the wrong people, said the wrong things in a speech and didn't keep his views to himself. Plenty of West Coast fans were happily booing and saying it was because he took out a player in a game two years before, even when Goodes and others asked people to stop.

I expected a few boos for Quaynor because all clubs have a few nuffies, but it was a huge section of their crowd last night and really embarrassing for the state.
A huge section is a stretch, AO is a loud stadium and keeps noise in, so a small number can always sound very loud. Add in the mix of plenty of drunk people who join in for the sake of it and you get what you saw last night.

I don’t understand booing and will never do it myself, but booing at a controversial issue is not limited to the city of Adelaide when it comes to sport.

I'd argue the Crows fans have let off Rankine incredibly lightly, his indiscipline might cost them a shot at the flag but somehow that's all Quaynor's fault. It's a curious logic at play.
Since when has booing in sport ever been rational? People boo at every tackle not being called for HTB, people boo their own players sometimes, people boo umpires and blame them for every loss. I could go on, but booing has never been a rational human emotion.

I can understand you want to water down the situation, but you are wrong it was the loudest booing of the night whenever Quaynor was in possession of the ball. Mass booing a guy for calling out a homophobic slur :$

What? Saying "I'll put you in a stretcher like last year"??? Sidebottom did a fake shoulder charge at Rankine late in the game after he kicked a goal and was celebrating with his team mates and you could see Rankine's reaction. Houston was also booed last night and I guess those booing Quaynor think he also said it.
Apparently, what he said to him was "the last time I saw you, you were horizontal"
So it wasn't threatening, it was just reminding him of more relaxing times :).

Collingwood need to stay in their lane in regards to crowd and club behaviour.

Fancy Eddie having a chip after the game,He must have forgotten he is a flat out racist.
I saw that McGuire had chimed in - he's the last bloke who should be aiming for the moral high ground regarding this matter.

Adelaide rolls worst joint ever delivers weakest official statement ever

Asked to leave club VIP room never play football again

I think the Crows are doing their best with this, Rankine was stupid, he's been punished.

The crowd was stupid, didn't help their side or Rankine. "Maybe other clubs will think twice before they rough up Rankine again" bad news, we don't even think once. The more they boo us, the stronger we get.

However laws are laws. If Adelaide get shut down for fairwork or human rights reasons that would screw the league, some poorer clubs would die.

So calm the **** down.

AFL, Media all let him down.
To be honest, while I don’t ‘boo’, at the time I thought he was being booed for other reasons.

But, that was 10 yrs ago now, and, post his retirement, I better understood the situation and how terrible it was. I’m embarrassed that I ‘didn’t get it’ at the time.

But, we’ve all come a long way and a lot of us have learnt why it was totally unacceptable.

Kinda funny that Collingwood played a big part in driving Adam Goodes out of the game and now suddenly their supporters are the moral arbiters of when you can and cannot boo a player.

Adelaide crowd showing why Rankine needed more weeks, not less.

They've shown a complete lack of leadership on this issue. Sure, there are racists in every fan base. It's up to the adults on the board to lead and condemn this sort of thing from the outset. Instead we had Nicks pretend it didn't happen and then the weakest statement in AFL history.

Rankine is going to be booed relentlessly until he quits, Adelaide fans have now guaranteed this.

I've never booed anyone, but the future of this issue is as clear as day. If Adelaide don't come out with a far stronger statement during next week, and a message to their fans, then Rankine won't have any more peace in his whole career. And Adelaide FC won't have a leg to stand on about his mental health or asking people to leave him alone. If you won't stand up for the victim, don't expect anyone to excuse the perpetrator.

Yeah, many booed Goodes, with no idea why they were doing it other than to be part of the mob behaviour.

Then, when challenged as to why they were booing, they desperately scrambled for reasons - anything really - to justify why they were doing it.

It was truly a shameful episode. There were a lot of morons following our game back then, and it seems there are still plenty doing so to this day sadly.

Yeah the Adelaide crowd didn't think that through too well did they. I wasn't feeling sorry for Rankine but god he is going to cop it bad now. The next Pies home game against the crows is going to be carnage. I fear he is going to be the next Adam Goodes and cop it from all supporters now which would be terrible. The AFL and Crows have a lot to answer for on the hopeless response and handling of the whole saga. Quaynor was all class with his comments after the game and maybe he realised someone needed to help diffuse the situation. Nicks press conference after the game however was an embarrassment.
