NO TROLLS Rankine handed a 4 match suspension by the AFL integrity unit for a homophobic slur against opponent

I agree with calling out offensive language. But booing surely can't be banned (probably will be soon, same as no more tackles or bumps!!).
It's a grey area for sure but given what I see on social media I don't believe the reasoning from some in here about justification for booing. 100% it was done in retaliation.

Booing will never be banned

Unless every AFL game is sold out it’s more important to get market share and atmosphere at the games booing is atmosphere makes great TV
I sometimes take a step back and think about things. I think about booing, why we do it, the origins and think how ****ing incredibly lame is it to boo, unless you've done it in jest it's lame espeically as an adult to take the game so seriously that you hate on another player. I've watched enough basketball to know it doesn't work in terms of putting a player off because in the moment players are often in the zone and literally hear nothing.

I see enough of the behaviour on Bigfooty, particularly on the club boards with respect to hate toward other players and clubs. Why can't we just love the game, and appreciate the players.

Because someone known on X for posting BS said it was Quaynor who had painted finger nails was subject to the F word??? I heard it wasn't even Quaynor who the F word was directed at and he didn't have painted finger nails.
Hey! You finally got there!

So maybe, do you think that it might have been the slur directed at him that lead to Rankine being suspended, that was why he was being booed at, rather than because he "roughed him up too hard?

When did this happen? It was a 13yo Collingwood supporter that yelled a racist slur over the fence at Goodes, but when did Collingwood supporters boo Goodes? It certainly wasn't at the game where the slur occurred because no one knew what had happened at the game.
I recall the booing was for years after that incident from other clubs including Collingwood or might have been Carlton???? It became a bit of a "norm" to just boo Goodes as others were doing it just like other Victorian clubs somehow booed JHF the following year after he left North.

ABAB you keep replying in this thread but still haven’t addressed the questions I’ve now asked multiple times:

Do you believe there’s ever justification for using a homophobic slur?

What do you personally believe about that kind of language?

Can you give any direct acknowledgment of the harm or seriousness of what was said... especially when even shared firsthand accounts (like the article about the Fox journalist at work) describing its impact?

Since you’ve chosen not to respond to any of those, I’ll just say this:

If you won’t say whether a slur is ever justified, wrong, or acknowledge the weight of that word even once…

Then don’t be surprised when people read that silence as complicity and you’re just giving cover to a culture that excuses homophobia when it suits them.

It was directed at Houston as well so logically the booing was because of the verbal threats by multiple Collingwood players and they think Quaynor did it as well since he was on Rankine.

When have I justified what Rankine has said? I said the suspension for saying it was very harsh to begin with and if Rankine did mean what he said and is a homophobe then he is a shit bloke if he can't be reform.

Sadly it did continue for years. The slur occurred in 2013, but Collingwood did not host Sydney again in Victoria until 2023. Every following match up was played in Sydney. Unless we travelled on mass to the SCG, or went to other teams games in Melbourne, it didn't happen.

I'll admit I had somewhat indifferent thoughts towards it at the time, but looking back the whole episode was shameful. We all let him down very badly.

As for the booing of JHF, I have no idea what the hell people were doing that for. It was bizarre.

Because your not talking amateur footy where it is for the love of the game

Your in the afl$$$$ where marketing ratings $$$$ sports market share counts not the love of footy

The afl try to make you think it’s about the love of the game it clearly isn’t or why the hell would you have teams in nsw and qld where people love rugby

I felt they booed JHF because he is a good player and think it affected him but then it was only some of the Victorian clubs though (understandable why North supporters booed him).

You're not condemning the slur you're just coming up with if clauses

You said weeks ago:

"The AFL stuffed themselves with giving 3 weeks to Finalyson. It should have been 1 week and a fine"

A fine? Seriously? That's how you condemn it?

You also point out "if he meant it." What?

In other words...you're refusing to directly condemn the word itself and...

You're still framing it all as if the real problem is the punishment, not the slur.

I still don't know your point here?

Plenty of people love the game in NSW. The game has been played here in Sydney at an organized level since before Rugby League was even invented.

I said a week and a fine and then increase it to 6 weeks if that player does it again. I don't know if Rankine said what he meant or he made a big mistake out of frustration after being verbally threaten with physical harm and finally snap and should have used the pussy word instead. You seem to judge he meant the F word without knowing him personally but then don't believe what he said in his press release.

I get North doing it, but Collingwood started it, even though we didn't have a dog in that fight. Unfortunately, we can't accuse all footy supporters of having brains.

So what if he was frustrated?

after being verbally threaten with physical harm and finally snap

Oh so you do think it's fine to be homophobic in this instance. So now we know you think homophobia is acceptable. Did you think this before the Rankine suspension or after?

and should have used the pussy word instead. You seem to judge he meant the F word without knowing him personally

What? Is this another reason you can say a homophobic slur? Do you understand the harm it causes? It kills people and destroys families, you're okay with that?

but then don't believe what he said in his press release.

What I thought and posted in regards to his press conference
"It’s just a word!" 🌈

That’s what they ALWAYS say... when they’re not the one being hit with it.

Rankine had this word ready to fire in his back pocket, not something you stumble over.

He spoke well today,

So obviously the booing was ridiculous but people should have unfortunately learnt to expect that from South Australian crowds by now

It was the response from Nicks and the SA Premier that was worse to me. To play dumb and almost feign ignorance to what happened and why was just cowardly

Kinda funny that Collingwood played a big part in driving Adam Goodes out of the game and now suddenly their supporters are the moral arbiters of when you can and cannot boo a player.
Why is it funny? That was 10 years ago.

The fact you like to trivialise serious issues to get some cheap laughs and then use those issues in an attempt to target a club you don't like is a sad reflection of the bloke you are.

Its exactly what it is. Lets not overthink it.

Its everywhere. All clubs in all sports.

A huge section is a stretch, AO is a loud stadium and keeps noise in, so a small number can always sound very loud. Add in the mix of plenty of drunk people who join in for the sake of it and you get what you saw last night.

I don’t understand booing and will never do it myself, but booing at a controversial issue is not limited to the city of Adelaide when it comes to sport.
AFC don't get the issue and ****ed it up from the very start when they rolled out Tex to drop some hints that some nasty things were said to Izzy.

Everyone knew that IQ was going to be targetted by the crowd - for being the subject of a homophobic slur - yet the Crows made no comment to their fans before the game.

Anyway, worked well for the Pies. I can't believe how many Crows fans thought that a hostile cauldron would advantage the Crows. Pies were always going to deal with the extra intensity added by the crowd way better than the Crows.

His treatment of Rankine? Quaynor wasn't even the one who reported him? Maynard reported it. All Quaynor did was be called the f-slur.

Rankine absolutely deserves to miss finals because of it.
You sound like you know what happened on there on the night. What happened between Rankine and Quaynor to get to this ?

Interestingly, the Tomorrow Man, Tomorrow Woman organisation, who are a wonderful initiative of young people (including some ex-footballers) that work mainly with school groups to tackle toxic masculinity (amongst other things) in men/boys, and acceptance and validation of this toxicity (amongst other things) by girls, have as one of their key activities asking alpha boys to put nail polish on one or more fingers for a day/week.

It is intended to offer these young blokes the opportunity to feel temporarily and voluntarily emasculated, and hence simulate for them what some minorities constantly experience and cannot just remove. A bit like the famous old "Blue Eyed" experiment in the 1960's by Jane Elliott for the simulation of racism.

I know my son participated in this when he was at secondary school and he actually found it to be a really valuable experience. Gave him a bit of a different perspective.
