I got a ticket for my son in 2015 who was silver at the time.
Back in the old days (pre-2000) there used to be a ballot offered and you could as a silver member get tickets to one of the PF’s and the GF if you entered. I joined in 1994 and was successful in the ‘95 ballot and got to see a PF and the GF that year as a silver member. Not sure what year they canned the ballot but I was full member by 1998.

Who remembers the day where you could choose the nominated “AFL” support package rather than choosing a nominated club for your annual AFl membership?
I can’t for the life of me work out what the point of that option was.
And approx what year did they eradicate walk ups for grand final day in the AFL members, resulting in full members of nominated clubs getting first dibs? I can recall in 2004 they definitely didn’t have game day walk ups.

It was 2002 it all started. 2001 was a ballot system that was scrapped after 1 year for the current system. 1999 might have been the first year of a fully ticketed system.

I know a few people (Pies fans) that all joined AFL members in 2003 season. They had full within 2 years I think

Yeah people forget it's only a very recent phenomenon that if you were such a dedicated AFL/Club fan and were willing to spend a reasonable amount of money you could access a grand final (as much to the modern complaints, the reason it's so hard for the AFL to manage getting fans into the stadium isn't just corporate/revenue maximising, it's because it's snuck up on them very quickly).
I know Melbourne fans in my personal life who went to the 2000 grand final and they weren't even ardent supporters, they just had a cheap membership and anyone who had a membership (and even those that don't) could have made the Grand Final.
Even if the 2021 GF was played in Melbourne, once you take out MCC and the small number of AFL Gold members, I think Melbourne's membership tally was so small that every 11 game and even a fair chunk of reduced game members could have gotten some of the 17,000 seat allocation.
That is not correct about Melbourne. Can tell you that we have 10,000 priority 1 members from our Legends, tridents, redlegs and Demon Seats Plus reserved seat gfg members. We have more than that P2 from normal 11 game members, MCC/premium, plus all 20+ year members have been made P2 members since about 2019.
P3 members would get a look in at like any other Melbourne club.

I'm going by the assumption that there would always be small percentages (~10%) or whatever that would never actually enter the ballot, or if they do, not actually execute the purchase of the tickets.
On top of that, I'm talking about 2021 where there were COVID factors preventing people from buying memberships, though when people were going to games in Melbourne early in the year the pandemic could have broken a different way as the year unfolded and we could have had a capacity crowd in Melbourne like we did eventually in Perth.
Additionally, naturally Melbourne's membership grew on the back of actually winning the flag, and what was true then isn't true now - I'm talking about a pre-winning the flag reality.
Got standing room 2012 with Silver
Went to 13/14/15 using other peoples Gold barcodes and in an effort to 'do the right thing' I'd queue at gates opening when it is a moshpit and no chance of being checked. Couple of other Gold friends took the P-1-55 out of me for that... until in 2015 when they were both were checked and both at different arrival times.
My numbers are based on the 54k members from 2021, not the 70k in 2022/2023.
10k P1 and more than that P2. Can take that as gospel

Aren't you double counting the MCC P2 Members many of whom would get a ticket through the MCC Reserve anyway as well?
No, they can go into the mcc ballot as a full member and have a separate Melbourne membership barcode to enter the club ballot.

Right, so it's one or the other, ie, you can't count them twice as preventing a genuine Melbourne fan from accessing the overall 100,000 seat stadium, which is what I'm trying to get at, so the effective capacity of the 17,000 for Melbourne members is effectively increased to count some of the MCC reserve.

Was it only available for full members?
Did Essendon nominated full members get priority for the 2001GF?

I think 1998 may have been the first year. I was upgraded to a Full Membership in 1997 and that's the only year I can recall lining up and running to get a seat.

They are around to check but they stick out like dogs balls so you know who they are and are easy to circumnavigate. I have been checked once before back about 20 years ago, but that was on purpose (shielding someone else).
My rant was why Medallion club holders can sit in the same area as AFL members and transfer their tickets to someone else but AFL members are not entitled according to AFL rules, which in my opinion is bullshit. But like you said, a lot ignore that, in fact I know some who pay for their yearly membership and then some by "selling" their barcode come GF time.
I joined in 2003 and got full around 2013-14…

A mate of mine was penalised for transferring his Gold membership-purchased Grand Final ticket to a random person who got evicted for poor behaviour.
My mate was initially given a 5 year ban from the MCG that was overturned when he demonstrated that he wasn't evicted, but he sold his ticket.
Instead he was downgraded to Silver for this season, not sure when he will be upgraded back to Gold
Must have been 13 because I joined in 05 and had it in 13.
When it used to move at 2000-3000 a year
Mate of mine gave his membership to some moron who walked up to the clipboard holders and got caught.
Had a warning I think.

It was quite common in the 2000’s for silvers to get GF tickets with the prevalence on Non-Vic clubs being in it.

Last year, there were a bunch of kids just lurking to the side of the turnstiles that looked scared to approach even the most obvious punter. They need persistent, uppity people to do the job properly.
If they were serious, they’d issue membership cards with a photo and stop everyone for a visual check.
Ok they must have gotten the dates wrong. They've been lucky having it for years
