Well he can be totally upfront and professional in his interviews with other clubs and inform them that he has absolutely no interest in playing/performing for them at all and that he would immediately seek a clearance at the completion of season one.
Those clubs would be well advised to concentrate their time and resources on other willing talent.
This of course probably wouldn’t be breaking news to any other clubs but would allow everyone to go about their business with a clear understanding of the realities at play.

And before we hear the cries of draft tampering, l think that most in football circles are well aware that this practice is pretty much accepted as commonplace and widespread these days …

The only way it can possibly work (it will still be stupid) is if your combined picks are "close enough"... a threshold applies so if your pick 7 + 13 is like 5% short, doesn't matter.

A year is a long time in footy, but I think all we can hope for is that clubs want their prized #1 pick to be their 'genuine' first choice.

Then plan to match a bid at pick 2.

Anything else is a bonus.

Watching Cal Twomey last night explain that if the Blues want to pick Cody Walker next year they will need 2 first rounder to do it and that the bid for Dean is likely to come inside our TDK compo it sounds like a no brainer to trade this year pick 10 for a future first

This idea would never work. All clubs are fully aware that Walker is a gun. He can talk up “I don’t want to go anywhere but Carlton” but it will have no effect. Carlton will get Walker but the price will have to be paid.

Correct. Its a strategy for another year and another player perhaps, but Walker is pretty close to a sure thing already so clubs aren't going to take too fondly to him trying to deliberately tank his stocks I'd think.

There is not a hope in hell this would work. If selected by another club he’d be tied to them for 3 years. Therefore Carlton will need to raise enough capital to match pick 1 or 2.

JHF got traded after year 1. Also, loads of players have slid over the years using similar tactics. It wouldn't be new.

Anyway he doesn't need to follow through on the threat. Doesnt even need to put clubs completely off him.

Just needs to create enough doubt that if there's another player thereabouts, the potential bidding club errs on the side of caution and picks the alternative instead.

Not saying hes going to slide from 1 to 5 or 8 or 10. Im talking 1 to 2 or 3.

Less likely to work if hes a Harley Reid level standout but Im not expecting that.

Depending on the cost involved for matching a Walker bid at Pick 2, we might genuinely be better off taking him ourselves with Pick 1 and then being able to use our natural first rounder on a second player (at a guess, Pick 5-10 somewhere).

I'm also on board with targeting the future WC first rather than Pick 2 this year, for what it's worth. As above, take Walker with it, or shop it for a stupid package of picks that match the Walker bid with change.

That being said, I think it also holds significantly more value for WC as well, so I think someone would have to make them a very good offer for them to part with the future first instead of one of this year's.

They do want more top 10s this year reportedly. I wonder if they consider an F1 swap. Reduces their risk vs trading out of the 2026 first round completely.

100% I remember Dunks having similar profile as a draftee - even drafted in a similar range (mid second rounder from memory, or early 20s at best). Laughing if he develops that well. Fraser has a big but exciting job.
