I don't think Oliver has helped himself by going overseas.
His trip was probably booked a long time ago. Oh & I’m not a supporter of him coming to our club either.
He probably didn’t expect his coach to be sacked & have the new one basically tell him he is surplus to requirements late in the year.

Didn't we push Ginnivan out the door and turn him into a gun?. Same thing with Smith at the dogs. Do you campaigners actually like being contenders? Oh the outrage
Yeah have a crack at him. Pretty good age profile to slide in between our youth and the older crew.

Could always do a Melbourne and on-trade him at the end of his first year if it doesn’t work out 🙃🤣

Oliver is an interesting one, clearly King and the Dees are moving on from Trac/Clarry/May shit show last couple of seasons, to give King a fresh start.

Oliver at his 2021-22 level (he was a back2back AFLCA champion player of the year, and Lou Richards medal winner) he was an amazing inside midfielder that all clubs would want him - as evidenced by Dees giving him that mammoth $1m+ contract in the back half of 2022.

In 2023 he started at similar level, but then had his hamstring and injury problems that escalated and revealed off-field drama and he then basically been a waste of two seasons at the Dees.

It could be like a Grundy style situation, another player with a 7year $1m+ contract that went bad, who has found a club that needs him in his specialty position, and just come 2nd in Swans BnF and is back playing great footy.

The Grundy comparison is because Oliver was (is) elite at stoppage, that is his only elite role. We do need help there, so is an obvious fit from a role perspective...we could just slot him in as our #1 inside midfielder for 2026 and back him to want to prove the doubters wrong, and we benefit. 👍

But then you have the D.Beams buyer beware situation. Beamer was only 6 months older than Clarry when we got him back. Similar talented player (had a much better previous couple of seasons actually before we traded for him) with off-field issues. Plenty hoped a fit and firing Beamer would be the missing piece to strengthen the midfield and help us get a flag. But the off-field issues were too problematic, we only ended up getting 10 games from Beamer (effectively finished at 30) and a big distraction off-field and waste of $$.

To bring him across, club would want to have done plenty of due diligence on him.

Why not, that's what managers are for

Maybe clubs would actually want to speak and meet with him face to face.

Managers are like car salesman. Will tell you want to want to hear.

Yesterday it was mentioned by Josh Jenkins that the fitness of Oliver is not what it used to be. I would have hoped to see Oliver cancel his end of season holiday and getting to work for next season.

Would anyone trade Bobby if it meant getting Bailey Humphrey?
🙋‍♂️

Reading through the smattering of responses you’ve got I’m genuinely staggered. Humphrey looks primed to be a legit star of the competition (he’s a 21yo JDG) and there are some that wouldn’t do it for a guy that has potentially, in a worst case scenario, played his last game for us even if he’s retained post trade week. This is what Edmund was referencing on the Agenda Setters in terms of Hill being gettable at the right price.

The real question is what’s the extra? Hill for Humphrey won’t get it done so where do you draw the line?

Even if we wanted Oliver, I fear the interstate teams will be ahead of us . Getting out of Victoria would probably be his no 1 preference.

It’s his annual leave time. When else should he head off?
Christmas during the mandated leave 🤷‍♂️

It’s no coincidence the club called the meeting for the morning of his departure and I find it rough to be judging him over that.

After sleeping on it I’ve decided I wouldn’t be against bringing in Oliver for cheap. Never underestimate the potential of a talented discarded player with a point to prove.
It’s the length of contract that’s the deal breaker for me. He’s no longer the player he was, and at 28, five years is too long.

So many other things to judge him on. His sloppy chassis doesn’t fill me with confidence he will keep himself going for another five years

There’s a key difference in the two. Beamer cost us 1st’s x 2 and Oliver will be lucky to get the Dees a pick in the 30’s. The risk is the salary and I’d make the Elliott comparison. The two will be on the same coin and it seems universally accepted that Elliott was good value…

This is the crux of the issue with Oliver. Also the fact that he is in decline.

I get that people are excited by the prospect of getting a star player cheap, but Oliver is not our man.

Elliott is on two years, Oliver would be on five. And before you mention his younger age, Oliver has fitness and lifestyle challenges that make that five years very risky.

I hope I'm right in this... if we were to find a way through the thicket of contract value and length issues, surely the biggest voice and vote in this would be Jackie Louder. Based on track record she is extremely good at figuring out how players tick and helping them to perform. If the club decides to bring Oliver in I'd be assuming she has given her view and it's been factored in to the risk equation, so I'd be happy on that basis.
