If we look at the Lions they didn’t have a dominate tall forward on Grand Final day. They mainly relied on mid sized forwards or midfielders to kick the bulk of their goals. A key strength of Brisbane’s is having a deep midfield which is complimented by having a range of players who can execute different roles.

That’s my reservation about taking CDT. We don’t need a CDT to win a Grand Final. Instead, we need fast, dynamic and skilful players that can push forward and kick goals, plus win stoppages/clearances. That’s why I’m still pushing for Cumming and Robey. My fear with Grjl is that he isn’t strong overhead and I’m not convinced he is a goal kicking midfielder.

I won’t be surprised if we picked CDT if he’s still on the board at our pick, given his impressive testing. I do rate that Xavier Taylor and flicking back to the Grand Final, I was really impressed with Wilmont for the Lions and his ability patrol their half backline and repel Geelong’s forward entries.

Ultimately, our selections in this years draft will be linked to the type of players that win Grand Finals and the quality that’s available at our pick e.g Sharp might be a better player, but Taylor is a critical piece in the puzzle to winning a Grand Final.

Been watching some highlights of Robey/Lalor/Smilie.

My big concern is kicking. Watch Lalor and Smilie and the way they hit players in space with pinpoint accuracy with minimal reaction time. Robey’s kicking is not in the same league - inaccurate and no ability to weight and read the play.

Yes it can be improved but instincts can’t be which Lalor and Smilie look to have and Robey doesn’t.

Could be wrong, but I’m happy for us to pass right now.

from the clips posted robeys kicking is fine. hes not pulling off cross field bullets to hit a player lace out amongst 3 opposition but few can. i'd still categorise him as a good kick.

He is more your meters gained type when in thge midfield, but a hard match up forward. Kicking is fine for that role.

Depends what highlights you watch.
Robey’s kicking in the game with 40 disposals was inconsistent, had some nice passes, and some that were misweighted and a few touched or smothered. The quarter final he hit most targets, some really precise field kicks, a couple of penetrating passes to Greeves resulting in goals and a couple of really nice kicks for goal himself. Good action, can kick both sides, goal kicking elite, has penetrating long field kicking, but is sometimes let down by decisions or weighting on medium kicks. I think his kicking is generally good and improving, but as you say, he’s not in Lalor or Smillie class, few are…

Cal Twomey seems to nail the top-10 almost every single year. I'd assume those in the inner sanctum of clubs know even more than him. But that's my point...if we are not 100% sure we know the Bombers won't take our preferred player, we won't do the deal. Or, we may be 51/49 deciding between players...so we may be happy to let Bombers take the pick knowing we've beefed up our draft hand and not lost anyone we were locked in to.

I’ve always looked at it this way re trading for any player - what’s the player worth to the club and their Premiership aspirations or even playing finals.
If getting Merrett gets them a flag in the next 3 years he’s worth 2 top 10 picks, regardless of age.
For a club like us, in the rebuilding stage, no way I’m giving up 2 , top 10 picks.

He's worth 2 first rounders one of which being a top 10 pick + a player of note.

Hawks won't be giving up 2 top 10 picks, as that is essentially going to either cost them 3 first rounders (both their future 1sts to get that additional top 10 pick) or a top player to acquire that second top 10 pick.

It's not an argument of worth; it is just far too much for Hawthorn to actually acquire for a 30 year old.

What is Merrett worth if he's 25 then if 30 year old Merrett is essentially 3 first round picks (Curnow and Jezza price whilst younger), 2 top 10 picks and a third first rounder?

Fans have a very tough time adjusting the 'value' of players as their age goes up.

I think the problem is that if we "know" who Essendon are going to pick then it stands to reason that they also "know" who we are going to pick. In that scenario we're only agreeing to the trade on the understanding that we are going to miss out on who we wanted. Otherwise both clubs will know there's no point in trading because the clubs will take the picks we both wanted at 3-4-5-6 and no one misses out.

If we end up with CDT it’s a huge win, as we need a new young ruck to join the rebuild and we’ve never really had one of the top tier ones (Gawn, Grundy types), although I’d probably still take peak Nank first for his ferocious tackling.

Don't mind Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier as a hbf with a quick burst and elite skills. Hasn't actually played this role though when I've seen him.

Last one not a need but could we grab a Liam Hetherton who was touted a top 10 KPF to start the year, kicked 11 in 3 games and played in the Academy team then injured his back.

Ruck contents are irrelevant unless the oppo ruck is grabbing the ball out of the ruck and taking possession or tapping to advantage like a beast. Most are break even or nil all draw.

Reckon Dalton is a fair chance to be 30+. Small, not super quick, not the best kick but I see a very good role player if can keep his kicking within limitation.
