Heard on Radio National the other day that there were literally lines of people queuing up to buy gold in Sydney.

Guess we're living in uncertain times, and at least gold historically seems to hold its own. There are still insurance and storage costs to weigh up, and you're limited to realising the profit on sale for any sort of return. It's not as if gold pays interest, dividends or distributions of profit.

Interesting times.

I used to pretty big into continually getting technology but once I got into my 20’s I stopped really caring or really having much need. Went back to using apple from Android. My iphone atm is 5 years old and I’m keen to let this go till it dies too.

My dad's not a cooker, just a cantankerous old man, and I was at the footy with him once and he tried to pay for food with cash, and he started going on a rant when they told him they don't accept cash, and while he was doing that I just quietly paid for the both of us

My dad's not a cooker, just a cantankerous old man, and I was at the footy with him once and he tried to pay for food with cash, and he started going on a rant when they told him they don't accept cash, and while he was doing that I just quietly paid for the both of us

Was on holiday with the in-laws last month, at the Sydney aquarium and they had a sign saying no cash and the FIL started giving the 20 year old at the til a lecture about legal tender and such. I waited outside.

That’s actually a legitimate whinge. Last I heard cash was legal tender and businesses shouldn’t be able to reject it…

If you want to force people to use cards then do away with the transaction fees. Can’t have it both ways

I'm not disagreeing with the principle, my issue is this kid on minimum wage putting in a shift isn't really the one making these kinds of decisions and can do without the 15 minutes of pointing and stern words.

People don't actually understand that cash is expensive for businesses.

There's the administrative burden of maintaining a float, the need to attend to daily banking, the risk of theft from employees with loose fingers and criminals targeting the store.

Also logistically transporting money and stocking ATMs with armed guards. Armaguard is in financial distress as well.

Businesses can pass merchant fees onto the customer and avoid all of that with electronic payments. It's a complete no brainer if you're operating a business.

A part of me dies every time a boomer say "cash is king" when come and pay for their stuff at my work.

The businesses concern though isn’t the customers problem.

As you said they are more than happy to shuffle merchant fees onto the customer so they shouldn’t Be allowed to not take cash

Speaking of cash but I absolutely loath atms and cash out places(woolies/coles) giving people only 50 dollar notes. I don't don't do a ton of cash anymore but theres an insane ratio of people who do pay with cash trying to pay with a $50 note. If I'm not on to it, my entire float would be out of wack.
