Respect the raccoon. They are nothing to be reckoned with.

When I still lived at home, we had our garbage can off to the side, about 10 feet from the small front porch. I heard a ruckus outside one night, put on the porch light then opened the door and poked my head out. A raccoon was standing up on his back legs and removing the garbage can lid. We stared at each other for a minute or so. I just shut the door. He was not skittish, did not run away…or even flinch. I left him to his task at hand.

A bold critter, to be sure. He was huge! Didn’t want to take a chance at making him mad. They can carry rabies. He was quite beautiful, too.

Many moons ago, my brother had a guinea pig that we kept in a large cage on the back porch in the summer. One night, my Dad heard some noise in the back yard, so went out to investigate.

He discovered a VERY large raccoon had opened the cage and was scrambling to grab the guinea pig as a midnight snack.

Dad yelled at the 'coon, who turned around and stood up on hind legs as if to say "you want a piece of this?"

Dad grabbed a shovel, and gave the 'coon a mighty whack. He scurried off to the back lot with his apparent harem in tow.

Don't mess with raccoons.

No, but she and her sister have trained us to dispense treats. The big one also likes to trap me in bed by lying between me and the edge.
