Half this board want him shipped out. He was obviously doing something right by the coaching staff, and obviously is a lot safer than many others in the side.

Agree Gooka Gia is safe, people forget that in 05 and 06 he would have been leading the B&F before getting injured. And mark these words he will Captain this club

No doubt he is skillful and can find the ball, but that's a good thing - he is a good player worth his weight in gold. If we can find a trade for him within the next three years, we will get something decent for him - if not, then at least we get to keep a good player.

I have no problems with Guido staying - but if the right deal presented itself, I'd jump at a top-ten draft pick or an established key forward with four good years left in him at the minimum.

I think the fact that Gia finished 7th in the B & F just goes to show how much trouble we could actually be in.
Totally agree! Can someone explain to me what it is that he does so well? All i see is someone who hangs out, never kicks the ball more than 25 metres, never in the game early when it has to be won,and runs twice as hard forward as he does defencively!

Gia's parents-in-law sit directly behind me each home game. Every set shot Gia has on goal they can hardly look! They basically ride every one of Gia's kicks, marks, handballs etc praying like hell he makes a good contribution.

I also noticed how many votes Gia managed to poll, good on him. I think he started the year quite slowly, and whilst it wasn't close to his most effective year, he still played some good roles and did some good things. Gia is one who really needs a big pre season. Having a huge motor to be able to run all day harder than he is at the moment will help him a lot. His useage this year wasn't as good as it can be, but we all know how good a finisher he is and he still led the club in goal assist for the season.

Gia is one who has suffered due to weight of expectation. In previous years he's played some brilliant midfield football, only to be struck down with injury just as he's breaking into some career form. This year he didn't seem to be thrust into the midfield as much, and was even playing as a defensive forward often. We all were expecting him to be tearing up the centre square, and it didn't happen. Eventually it will, and him getting fitter will help a lot.

Here, here..

If this happens I am all for keeping him, but his lack of fitness is severely holding him back. At present when in the midfield he is severely hampered by his lack of work rate which means he doesn't get to enough contests and can not put in repeated 2nd and 3rd efforts. He spends more time with his hands on his head than he does at the bottom of a pack.

He is a good player, no doubt, he is also a smart player as he knows how to position his body and put's himself in a position where the ball falls which is vital in the midfield and as a small forward. He is also courageous, he puts his head over the ball, but is soft in terms of his work rate. What I and many other supporters are frustrated with is that his fitness hasn't improved and that is the only thing holding him back from being a very good player for the team rather than just a good player.

7th in the B&F...........big deal!
He's exactly what's wrong with this club and it's culture! If 7th is a great result for an established player with very few injuries who has been around for about 6 or 7 years then we are praising mediocrity!
Remember we finished 13th not top 4, it's about time we started demanding more from our players but it seems to me that most people on here are quite content with this result............sorry but i don't agree and think he has under achieved and will no way be our next captain otherwise my money stays in my pocket!

One finals appearance in 7 or 8 years. The only team in the competition not to play in a preliminary final in the past 10 years (I think). I think those results speak for them self.

And yet he did his best in the b&f in 05 and 06 when we missed out on the finals on the last game and then made the finals.

But it's good to see Gia getting some of the blame for some seasons that he wasnt even on our list for.

Personally i blame higgins for our poor years with Rohde

I think this is the most rational argument in this thread.

Posters are saying a guy with his experience and in the leadership group finishes 7th in the Best and Fairest where at least 5 players I can think of missed more games than he did and would probably have finnished in front of him if they played those games namely Grant, Griffen, Cross, Hahn and Murphy, has backed up his supporters on this board and stuck it up the detractors. We are in trouble as too many people who follow us don't even realise they accept mediocracy.

Gia has been nothing but a disappointment and if he becomes captain without putting 3 genuinly good years of football together we have lost the plot. Stop looking through rose coloured glasses at some of our players. Demand they show leadership.

Ok so he would be our 12th best player if that happened. What exactly is wrong with that and how is that accepting mediocrity?

Why do people in the leadership group need to be the best players on the team?

Truer words have not been spoken. And Gia as captain? Please God, no! He's not our worse player (he tries, but doesn't make enough second efforts), but he's not captain material, unless he's captain of the body bronzing brigade.
