Freo love playing 2 rucks and everytime Sean Darcy went down they still didn't play Reidy...says alot. He also got toweled up against 18yr old Cody curtain who isn't even a ruck and a kid. Bahahaha!

I don't think freo like playing two rucks at all. They've just ended up with 2 very high priced but Jackson was supposed to be more of a fwd.

100% he'll be a blue but at what cost.

I hope he has a quiet year in the champs and doesn't cost us 2 firsts possibly 3.

All I'm saying Butters is elite an upgrade on Walsh and worth 2-3 firsts.
I'd pay for Butters back to back all Australian with more to come, origin player. Fast, elusive, durable, tough as nails elite kick elite footy IQ , tackles what a player.

Will Cody be that???

What I've watched of him all last year sorry to say I don't think so. He'll play 200 and be serviceable probably win a AA but not elite.

Jagga will be elite he has it.

Dean on the other hand worth those 2 firsts I wish it was only one but KPD with his pedigree and instincts are rare and he will be great. Look how vulnerable we are when weiters is injured or sore. Too find KPDs of that calibre in drafts is a lottery so worth the 2 firsts.
Now you've judged Cody Walker too, having played zero league games...

You are good.

People gonna hate...but I let Walsh go and use the cash on an elite midfielder from port.
We'll have the cash whether Walsh goes or not. We freed up millions last year and have a lot more coming off the books in the next 12-24 months. Only issue will be getting him to nominate us ahead of others. Getting rid of Walsh doesn't help with that task at all.

Butters will be the most expensive player in history. Both contract $ and trade value. We know Port definitely have the cap space to match anyone.

Great player but I can't see Carlton going down that path when our big gap on the list now is key forward. Ben King or Jed Walters would be my targets. King probably going to cost a fortune also but will be a free agent as there's no way GC have space in the salary cap to match.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure this year will highlight that we need that genuine second key forward. I think Harry is going to get scragged and double teamed a lot this year. Not sure Reidy, HOK, or even Kemp will cut it playing as a second key tall (Kemp is better as a 3rd tall). Sure we will be more unpredictable in our forward line but say we manage to get someone like Ben King as a FA.. him, Harry, Hayward, Moir/Kemp + a couple of smalls like Ainsworth, Byrne and Evans would be pretty damn good forward line capable of hurting the opposition in many different ways. This should be our priority target IMO (a 2nd key tall forward).

Butters would be amazing but we have greater needs. A midfield of Walsh, Smith, Walker, Cripps, Hewett, Lord, Campo looks far more dynamic than what we have previously had. We can get rotations in there through Lij and Moir too to change up the look.

I also think we are going to have to get a lot of game time into our emerging half backs this year (Wilson, Carroll, Charleson etc) to see if they can carry us forward because we have a bit of a situation with Newman, Saad, and Williams all far closer to the end of their careers than the start. It's not out of the realms of possibility that all three aren't on our list next year so that would open up a huge hole in our half back line. So a half back through trade or FA may be on the cards also pending how we look there.

Unless Lewis and Derkson(if chosen) have spectacular seasons this year, then I think Harry will need some tall backup going forward.
Even with dynamic medium and small forwards presenting, there's still going to be over 50% long bomb forward entries.

I like HOK as a 2nd ruck/KPF option, but investing highish draft picks next year in a KPF/ruck(or free agency) should be an urgency.
Prefer to develop a young player for this role.

Let this kid clarify what I said, I didn't call him a name just referring to his s### skills for AFL.

if you don’t think that twice say a player is s&$t without any other substantive discussion is name calling, then this probably won’t change your mind, but here goes:

You’re saying that about a Carlton recruit. Who we brought in for basically nothing. A guy who was the dominant ruck the WAFL, but was stuck behind Darcy and Jackson. The last guy in that situation was Meek and he’s doing pretty good.

He hasn’t even played a game for us yet, and you’re writing him off as not being good enough. Maybe he’s not up to the level. But until he shows that, he’s a Carlton player, so get behind him.

You’re also advocating for Butters. Proven player, very good, would love to have him, but it’s just incredibly difficult to bring him in. We’ve just spent two years restructuring the salary cap, getting rid of the top heavy contracts to create a better spread, and stashing draft picks for Cody. Bringing in Butters would just be the antithesis of all that work.

Butters contract is going to be crazy. Ports got money to match, so it will not only cost possibly the biggest contract in afl history, but we’d also have to offload Walsh, and all the capital we accumulated for Cody, just to be in the conversation.

Cody can be our version of Butters. But we get his whole career instead of the second half, on a draftee contract for a few years, with him playing alongside Walsh for the rest his career, and still walk away with money in the cap for another free agent. Look, I know that’s a big leap of faith on a kid that’s yet to be drafted, but if you’re talking risk v reward, Butters is much riskier than both Walsh and Cody.

I can respect the difference of opinion on butters/walsh and Cody - we should be asking tough questions if it means making the team better. But being contrary isn’t the same as being critical. Especially with Reidy - he’s a Carlton player, give him a chance to prove himself.

I agree we are light on, in the tall fwd department and king would be perfect but Midfeilds win flags more so and ours is meh.

It's a fair point but Jagga and Walker are points of difference to what we currently have.

If Walsh and Cripps are fit it could be a pretty dominant midfield.

I'm actually slightly excited Cerra is out as it frees up midfield minutes to experiment - more Jagga, Moir, EH, etc. I agree it's a bit slow ATM.

Is Derksen on the open market or do we have an option ?

We definitely need to sign him IMO. I know I have too much time on my hands
as I have watched the replay several times now.
But reinforced to me how very, very good he was.

Larger defenders are hard to find.

Rivals would certainly be looking at him if available.

Only to those clubs with SSP availabilities. If not then, MSD.

If we’re signing Lij then we don’t have a spot for Derka Derka unless we slot Jesse Pinkman on the Inactive.

With Walter White off the train-on list and Derka Derka replacing him, he’s the 2nd SSP train-on allowed per open list spot, though he was training with us through the VFL signing.

Mot’s has got to be moved off for the season and Derka Derka to replace. He can’t have a run (unless SSP selected) vs Geelong so the Brisbane game was a good showing.

I really believe we want another tall but can’t find one we really like or think are good enough.

We are weighing up bringing in a “stop gap” player as opposed to a permanent solution

Like what I see from derksen.
If he produces that again against the cats(if he’s selected) then I’d be happy to give him a spot. I think he’s a guy that’s been starved of opportunity and will take it with both hands given the chance.

He can’t play against the Cats unless he is added to the list first.

To be honest I thought Derkson looked better then Young. At least I felt more comfortable when he was 1 on 1.

I liked Derksen, in part because he played with desperation.

But he's definitely got rough edges and is a stop-gap.

Young, with teammates who knows his weaknesses is a better player. Legitimately takes contested intercept grabs and can swing forward and into the ruck without being a total liability.

Wade may prove me wrong, but I feel he's a depth option not a best 23

The thing is we won’t be looking to Harry as much. And we won’t require him to mark either with the amount of medium and small forwards at his feet. If they double Harry then one of Evans, Byrne, Ainsworth, HOK/Reidy or Haywood will be free.

I'm sorry but Cody plays nothing like butters more like his dad.

Jaggas skillset is alot similar to butters.

I get butters will cost a fortune but thats the skillset of list management of structuring contracts in the right way for the future of the club, other clubs can do it to keep been competitive year after year.

At least you know your not over paying for a player who pisses off the fans with underperformance and regular injuries.

L.Young could be the perfect 23rd man as the capable ruck backup & KPP relief, forward or back.
Ruck as defensive marker as well.

Derksen was behind some real quality defenders at GWS, with a genuine opportunity whilst Dean & O'Farrell are developing he may be a geninue acquisition for the next 2-3 years.

Hopefully common sense prevails and Motlop is put on the LTI, very few have a 6month recovery not worth the risk at his stage of his career.

I know it is only a glimpse of Derksen but in my mind he looked like a keeper.

To me Haynes was a stop gap player last year.

When Newy went down he did an admirable job after a very shaky start. He could still be valuable this year.
However, he is getting on, is not a great kick and is slow. We need to go past him IMO.

Derksen at 24 is ten years younger and may be just the ticket.
