News Port passes on Jaidyn Stephenson

And after Geelong saw him play those 9 games they delisted him. Still found room on their list to keep Jacob Molier, Oliver Wiltshire, Lennox Hoffman, and Keighton Malakai-Forbes though. Who are any of those people? I have no idea, but Geelong thought they were all more worthy of a spot than Clohesy. Sounds like they didn't want him to play any more AFL games. I guess with Soldo and Jed gone you have to find a new spud to hitch your wagon too though?

I'm sure there's a highlights package you can find of Brodie on YouTube if you want.

Would have liked to see how he went with this lifeline. A shame. But atleast he put himself out there to have a crack. Opened himself up to a lot of public put downs which is commendable. He should have a go at VFL and nominate for mid season. Maybe he’s not worth the risk and clubs have shown not a lot of interest. Perhaps another half season of solid competitive football might be enough to change some minds. If not all the best.

A clue might be in Matt Turner's article:

"Hinkley was long considered to love talent.

High-profiled recruits – many who had been on the outer at their previous clubs – arrived under him, such as Charlie Dixon, Tom Rockliff, Jack Watts, Steven Motlop and Willie Rioli, and Hinkley backed his relationship-building to help them perform.

The perception was that while role players could get a side to finals, talent would win it those games.

Carr is determined to prioritise the team, even if that sometimes means not picking matchwinners."

For mine not picking Stephenson is the antithesis of the Hinkley era.

His name is pronounced Closey?

Excuse Me Wow GIF by Mashable
Didn't Port have a player called Craig Clohessy who played in the late 1970s ? I think he mainly played Reserves footy with a couple of League games in 1980. That was before my time of course but you would remember Ford.

Different spelling and totally irrelevant of course but the name jogged a memory or two.

Yes, good post. We cannot fault the bloke for having another crack at it and by all reports he had a dead set go.

I think we will probably elevate two of the train on players and select Van Wyk or an available ruckman in the MSD. If that is the strategy then Stephenson obviously didn't fit. If Soldo had not been injured Stephenson might have stood a better chance.

Whilst I don't agree with the decision, I think it speaks to where the Club currently sees its list profile, and the direction they want to head in.

Going to be quite the influx of youth coming through over the next 2 years.

Could "influx of youth" be deemed a rebuild? Sshhh. Don't tell Koch.

Be interesting to see if they’re going to look to trade anything out. I guess that depends on Butters

My thoughts also, possibly 7 to 8 kids coming on to the list in next 2 years, club is in a transition , however no one will say it openly.

Haha, yeah.

I was told last year even going back to before the season started, that the Club's footy department was prepared to take a step backward under Josh early on when it comes to results, if that put it in a better position going forward to win a premiership. Granted, I don't think they anticipated sliding to 13th last season either, which probably increases the pressure on Carr at least early this year to get some results to show that the slide we saw under Ken won't continue.

Well if I take a look at the list, outside of Butters and Bergman, I'm not sure who they have who would be a prime trade candidate to fetch a premium in terms of draft pick compensation.

I'll be surprised if Butters stays. Club would obviously like him to stay but they've been prepared for his departure for years. I actually think if they had to pick one to keep out of Butters and Bergman, it would be the latter.

My bigger concern is that there needs to be a big roup in that 23-29 age bracket who are going to make up a premiership side. Just looking at the list, I'm not sure they're actually going to have the right balanced age profile for 3-4 years, which could even theoretically put Rozee at the end of his prime as well. Lots of moving parts going on for sure.

But if they get all of Cochrane, Pilot, Salopek and Rodan at bare minimum over the next two drafts, that's a great group to pair with some of the existing young players in the squad.

Will be incredible if we nail all those father sons and they’re actually good.

Along with Jase - that’s quite the crop

schulzy, what are you on about every time you post? seriously

He said Clohesy is unlikely to play an AFL game... he played 9 games last year. im posting video evidence 😱

At the same time, he, you and others think Brodie is a certainty to take Drews spot in our side (?). who the fa rk is Brodie?

What are you on about!
I was very clearly talking about playing an AFL game for us. I know he has played some for Geelong in the past before being delisted.

Attitude issues are so difficult.
Refer Jeremy Finlayson. We’ve been warned.
Finlayson is in a different bucket - his issues are related to his wife's terminal cancer diagnosis and ongoing battle. Completely understandable and unfortunately not something any club would be able to resolve.

Well he was a laconic low intensity player anyway, notwithstanding his family issues

We did and all the letters were pronounced. He might have come from Centrals. Looked ok then disappeared.

Not true really. He was just as petulant and undiciplined well before that life event.

He was soft before all of her health issues came about. Had a reputation at GWS as being the softest player on their list.

Why Josh Carr don't like goal kicking forwards?

He likes Zadow, who kicked just as many goals as Stephenson in the trial.

Zadow is only 21. He did seem pretty decent considering. Made a few mistakes but didn't seem to drop his head and cracked back into it from what I noticed in team trial simulation the week before. Also, being he's from WAFL Fremantle might of made Carr like him more. Suppose it makes a bit more sense to get the 21 year old who's either not far off the talent and skill etc as JS or close enough to it with more upside and potential plus less baggage.

If they think they're around 3 years away, Stephenson would be well past his prime at that point, whilst Zadow could be entering his.
