Autopsy 2026 Round 0 Carlton vs Sydney Don't ask me, I don’t know either

Most of those first round picks will be used to get Walker, and if there are any left over then the AFL haven’t done there job properly. 🙄
Just crazy what the AFL are doing here... we're close to another set of comprimised drafts and star players and decent kids being poached by the incoming new franchise and especially a club like us who you would like to be powerful and have an opportunity to compete consistently with the likes of GC, GWS, Brisbane, and such during the next 5 years would be nice, since so many others have benefited from F&S. We paid fair price for Dean and the Campo boys, didn't see us go collect a hundred 3rd rounders like Brisbane did for Ashcrofts etc.

Question

Are we closer to what we did in first half or second half?

Can we sustain first half and improve on it?
We can. There will be times when our running plan falls off a cliff. Fans needs to expect that. Look at when Hawthorn changed their gameplan a few years back as a reference. We can hope to be that.

  • Young, there is a footballer in there somewhere. Clearly he's got confidence issues and I'm sure coaches have identified that and perhaps have told him just focus on the 1%'s when in doubt and that's all he seems to want to do. Opportunities to clearly mark, we get a punch. Slowing down plays or picking a wrong option too many times because he's in two-minds. I think this is a case where the coaches and the "funk" that has infested within the walls at our club have killed his potential.

Or in some instances don't even try and get the ball even if you're the closest person to it.

I'm relatively new to Big Footy, so forgive my naivety, but man I've got whiplash. Blokes tipping us on the thread, some by a margin, and now we're in agreement we should sack the coach and half the list? Christ.

Swans are really good. We were $3.90 outsiders for a reason. We played up to their level for more than a half and then they got us. With the changeover in our list expecting us to sustain that level was foolish.

I'm not saying it was a good performance, but I don't think it was horrible either. A lot of positives - Dean was good, Florent gave us a great option off half back, Smith/Walsh in the middle etc. With the new faster game style we were right to change our list profile.

We'll know a lot more after the Richmond game, though again you can't expect us to put 60 on them. We will improve as the season goes on and our list has a chance to gel.

How is it blind hope to try players to see if they are up to it? Makes no sense to me

It‘s blind hope to suggest that we have the group, let alone state it as fact.

Most clubs in the competition have a list of kids better than ours. Most clubs also develop them better. Our list of senior players and leaders is now only average so we have no point of difference when it comes to winning games.

That we felt we had to recruit limited players like Chesser and Reidy to play over guys like Wilson and O’Keefe tells me most of our kids are a fair way off it. They aren’t just games at the level away from being good players.

Right on man. We are toxic and frustrated rightly so. The high highs and low the lows

Where I have said they will make it?

We have 14 players under 21. That is a lot and we need to see if they are up to it. Simple

What a stupid discussion 🤷

Sydney did a way better job of player management. First half all of their prime movers spent plenty of time on the bench - none with >70% ToG. All of ours were >70%. The only players we had under that mark were the two ruckmen (and one other, I can't recall who, maybe Moir).

Emphasised that our two-ruck strategy was a poor one. Sydney's mids were far fresher in the second half, ours were burnt out.
So many great thoughts in here, but for me, this is one that really stood out. No wonder we couldn't go with them in that second half. I actually believe we have the personal to be much more competitive.

100%. Many here questioned selection and sadly it proved correct

A lot to like about the first half, especially for team in the middle of a rebuild.

We haven't had any killer in us for years, Swans showed what killer looks like.

We have a reputation for being the softest team in the league and no opposition ever thinks they are out of the game.

22 points in front could easily have been 46, but because of out reputation, no one is putting the que in the rack no matter how far we get in front.

I don't know the current composition of the Match Committee but their selections lack the dare that they expect from our players.

I still think we will have a shot at top 10, but 13th looks likely, just play the kids.

Same old same old. Slow (on the SCG of all grounds) and shocking skills.

Looking like a carbon copy of last year - vaguely promising pre-season, come out looking good for the first half in round 0/1, then the instant they get in a position where they should reasonably go on with it and win the entire team collectively shits the bed, get utterly embarrassed and destroy what little confidence they have for the rest of the season.

Fogarty must have photos of every member of the selection committee at this point, 0 tackles just lol. Ressies for the rest of the year please and not to be selected no matter what he does there, followed by a long overdue delisting at season's end.

full rebuild and another decade in the wilderness incoming.
You can get any coach you like in there, nothing will change until the list is rebuilt around more modern sensibilities - primarily kicking skill and pace.

Nothing has changed re: the above. Long hard road ahead (coz we haven't had enough of that already lol).

At least we didn't cave in and trade with Geelong last year, because other than Hickmott every trade done with Geelong in the last 30ish years the players we've been given by them have had pretty average careers.

We need another tall in the forward half. Too much on Harry's shoulders. He had a couple of bad moments but overall I felt he competed well. Derkson was recruited as a forward originally and has a nice set of hands. I know we recruited him to play back but it might be worth a shot.
I think the game is too fast to play 2 ruckman even with 5 now available on the bench.

World hasn’t fallen in…yet.

What last night showed me was that our senior players are nowhere near the level of other teams, apart from Weitering and Walsh. Acres, Saad, McGovern best footy is behind them. Williams goes missing when the game heats up.

Harry always seems to lack self belief, will struggle as our key forward. Cripps and Hewett can’t keep up.

Our team is made up of a bunch of battered & bruised senior players, a bunch of C/D graders and some good young kids.

What do we expect?

Anyway. Weiters and Walshy held their own. Florent was good. Ainsworth & Hayward genuine goal kickers who will get better as the team gels. Dean was fantastic. Jagga will learn a lot from his first game at this level.

Get Frank back. Seeya Fog.
Get Cowan back. Seeya McGovern.
Get Carroll back. Seeya Saad. (Boyd for Saad if Carroll isn’t ready)
Get Haynes back. Seeya Young.
Maybe a Flynn Young or Byrne for Reidy. But worried about who gives Pitt a chop out.

Very, very, very disappointing.

  • One of Cripps' worst outings as a leader - looked slow, selfish, and sooky.
  • McKay is cooked, has zero interest in using his body. This is his 10th year now, he's clearly never going to live up to his ability consistently. From all reports a sensational bloke and hard worker on the track, but he hasn't got it. It being unwavering competitiveness & the mental fortitude to be a professional athlete. We have no other options though, unfortunately.
  • Weitering didn't want to be out there, just gave up. Was never good at playing hurt.
  • In the end, it was the midfield - who are meant to set the tone - got absolutely smashed in the 3rd and didn't change anything. Just kept running fwd of the ball and being lazy on transition.
  • Kids were ok, the battlers (Williams, Gov etc.) did their thing which is.... battling.

It just really hurt, that one. Seeing Charlie kicking goals, all happy in a 10+ goal win against us, just ****ing hurts man.

I fear it's going to be a long ass year, but the optimist in me will point out:

  • 7 new players
  • Opening round on a hot, heavy, humid condition - and wet
  • Collingwood had the exact same result last year, after travelling to GWS in similar conditions.
  • Young side
  • Sydney are absolutely stacked this year
  • Played good footy in the 1st half, well at least a change in game style.

A few more of these though and Voss will be gone by round 6.

I asked this a lot during pre season. Why don't we ever work on our skills. We very rarely train on pure skills. It's a massive problem and we don't address it

I don't get it
Half the players we complain about can not improve anymore. It is what it is with them. Cant magically expect Hewett, Walsh etc to do what Gulden does.

Once again the laughing stock of the AFL at the start of the season. These guys will never learn, always finding a new low every ****ing time

Acres completely anonymous out there, I'd be delisting him today

It looks like we are 2-3 years away from being 1-2 years away from contending for a top 8 spot let alone a serious team

Dean was incredible, Jagga was too but HF left him in no mans land too often. When he gets involved he gets involved big time. I wouldn't mind having Jagga at HB instead of HF and having 15-20 CBA's per game. Similar to year two Nick Daicos.

27 on debut mind you, equalled Nick's debut. Obviously a star.

However, of the two kids, Dean looked better last night which is massively positive obviously given the wraps for Jagga and the fact that he still had ****ing 27 touches and looked like a 100 game player. Dean just looked ready, so clean off the deck too. Upgrade on JSOS already.

When you say “we have the group” it says that you believe Carlton’s list and kids are in great shape and it is other factors holding us back.

If you are merely suggesting that you want to see more of the bottom end of our list as we have some okay kids, well yeah so do 17 other clubs.

When your 70 and been watching the same crap round and round for over 30 years come back to me

Wish I'd screen-shotted and posted... Was looking at the ToG stats at half-time and said to myself 'uh-oh'. Would have looked like Nostradamus.
